Reel Big Fish Part Ways With Jive Records;

Band Is Ecstatic To Get Back To Its DIY Roots

Orange County's Reel Big Fish is officially off the Jive Records roster and that’s just fine with them. After four years and two full-length albums (We’re Not Happy ‘Til You’re Not Happy and Cheer Up!; not including a release from front man Aaron Barret and RBF Trumpeter John Christianson's side project The Forces of Evil) the two have just parted ways. Reel Big Fish can now pursue more daring opportunities that didn’t fit into the corporate scheme of things and Jive will continue to search for the next big boy-band.

Never ones to wallow in self-pity (who are we kidding?) the long running ska-punk act is genuinely excited about what the future holds as they are now free to embrace the DIY ethic that has always been a part of Reel Big Fish but was suppressed thanks to major label politics. Over the years the band has picked up a few tricks and enlisted help from various industry notables rather than relying on the standard record label infrastructure.

"The traditional major label business model is a dinosaur whose feet are already covered in tar," points out band manager Vince Pileggi. Adding, "We have already been in touch with numerous labels and are actively considering aggressive deals that we hope will be the new industry standard."

Reel Big Fish are currently weighing their options as they tour the country with Goldfinger and Zebrahead as part of the Deep Freeze Tour. Later this month they will head overseas for additional concert dates followed by a quick trip to Las Vegas for the International Ska Circus, a 2-day ska music festival similar to the successful Ska Summit back in 2003, and a one-off performance in Dubai before going into the studio to mix a live album which is now expected to be released this summer.

Fans can expect a major announcement about the band's summer tour plans shortly.

No freaking way. It is about time. I'm glad a lot of bands are finally getting off the major labels.

Like anyone didn't see this coming. Here is to hoping the next album is much better than We’re Not Happy ‘Til You’re Not Happy.

There was something lacking in we're not happy, it had a few decent songs, too many covers for my liking though, one is enough but if i rememebr right the cd has at least 2 maybe 3..Still love th eband though, i just think this wasn't one of their best releases. In fact fuck releases go see them live every song sounds great when they play it live:D

No lie. Awesome live.
It's good to see they're getting what they want, you could tell by their last album they hated Jive.

Only 3 bands I've seen live that have played for over 2 hours...Dashboard (solo acoustic and amazing), RxBandits, and Reel Big Fish...but I cant wait to see this band again. You never see the same show twice with them

That's cool. I was just never really a fan I guess. It seemed uninspired and just not as fun which is why I really like Reel Big Fish. But to each his/her own... after all... I like Cheer Up a lot and many people hate it.

Backstreet Boys were by far the best Jive band tho.
Hands down.

Aaron and Ryland sounded fucking ecstatic on the phone last night. Expect great new things if you're a RBF fan. They're already thinking of great follow ups. It's a breath of fresh air and as a fan I am really excited.

Here's what I want out of Reel Big Fish on the next studio release:

1. More upstrokes.
2. Lot's of horns.
3. More fun.

I'm pretty excited for this live release.

their new album wos easily the worst album iv ever heard. saw them perform it live and despite being great live, the songs lack everything. awful. i think this is a good move for them.
