well thats good. that should give you confidence so even if it is worse case scenario and you need the surgery, just tell yourself that it will get heaps better like with your dad.

Yea I've had back surgery (scoliosis runs in our family) it was pretty scary I had to where a back brace for some time until my spine was curved so much they had no choice. The worst part was shortly after the surgery they made me get up and walk! It was so awkward feeling and painful. But other than that the pain meds took care of everything.

I've done gymnastics for 13 years and my back started bothering me about a year ago and went to get it checked out. The doctors assumed it was stress fractures, since that's a common injury, but instead they found out that I have an extra bone attached to a vertebrae in my back. I was born with the extra bone, but doing gymnastics for so long irritated it and has now lead to arthritis. Getting surgery is not exactly the best option because having this extra bone is rare and very few doctors have probably ever done the surgery, so it would be risky. Other than that, I have no other options and will have to live with it.

I've gotten tons of MRI's, bone scans, CT scans, x-rays, etc. They really aren't that big of a deal, you just have to lay still for a really long time. Whether or not you should get surgery depends on the how much pain you feel in your day to day basis and whether what you have will affect you later on in life. Your doctor would be able to best explain to you the pros and cons of surgery. Also, you're still really young, so you need to consider whether you would be okay with putting up with back pain for the next 60+ years. If surgery were an option for me, I would definitely get it, especially since I have a long life ahead of me and I won't be getting any better. Hope this helped.

my brother had spinal surgery for a benign tumor in his spinal column...it was possible that he could never walk again, due to the risks of the surgery affecting the nerves...he has a 6 inch scar on his back from the surgery. he used a walker for the first two months after surgery, then a cane, and now walks just fine, and is back to driving the car. :) im sure you will be ok, i will keep you in my thoughts.
