Start Trouble - Every Solution Has Its Problem
Record Label: Sony
Release Date: March 23, 2004

With Blink moving in a more mature and mainstream direction, Green Day long past the days of Dookie, and bands like All Time Low and Yellowcard turning the genre mainstream and bland, quality pop-punk is wearing thin. But there are some bands around that are doing pop-punk the way it should be done (Daggermouth, Rancid, Lifetime): chill lyrics that are honest and unpretentious with fun, catchy melodies. Adding to that exclusive group is Start Trouble, a Florida-based four-piece band, with their debut full-length, Every Solution Has Its Problem.

The album opens with "Graduation," a melodic punk track with pretty straightforward lyrics and faint chorus vocals overtop a huge chorus. The guitars drive the song for the whole three minutes. Up next is "Non Stop," which slows things down a bit, while a beautiful guitar part leads into a fun chorus of "I wanna fuck non stop/baby I think you're beautiful." Track three, "Chemical" is a raggae-ish track (sounds like Sublime) with a light-hearted, catchy chorus ("Love is a chemical/straight from your genitals/never is spiritual/never unconditional"). The song is probably the catchiest thing on the whole album.

For most of the album, Start Trouble stick to that basic formula: a simple guitar part, a melodic catchy chorus, and some amusing lyrics about sex, alcohol and goofing off, but the band does branch out and try other things. The album features a rock version of "Move Bitch," by Ludacris, which is pretty good. They incoporate some hip hop into "Let's Get Fucked Up," the album's big hit. "Alcohol my only friend," lead vocalist Luke Walker sings over more chorus vocals and an interesting strings arrangement.

The album features ballads, as well. Track number five, "Diggin Holes" is pretty sincere, with Walker singing heartfelt lines like "I don't believe in love/but something there was real." "Retaliate" is a great ballad as well, and I think Start Trouble are as talented at writing slow, meaningful songs as they are at writing upbeat pop-punk rockers.

My favorite quote from the band is "Ultimately, it's about the fun for us, a surprisingly refreshing and welcome attitude amidst the current growing glut of angst-ridden, sad-sack rock bands that don't seem to realize that rock n' roll is supposed to be nothing but a good time." And, honestly, I couldn't put into any better words what this album is like:

"Nothing but a good time."

Blink's early material; fun lyrics; nothing but a good time

This is absolute shit. You've already got enough strikes going against you and then you say All Time Low and Yellowcard are bland

I have a right to an opinion, and you're acting like a little bitch just because you disagree with something I wrote.

Ok fine. How on earth could you talk something like this up and say that Yellowcard and All Time Low are bland? What is it you find redeeming about this(you really only give a summary of the songs really, not necessarily a review).

EDIT; Isn't it normal to disagree with opinions? That's why they are opinions, right? It's not as if I said you were wrong necessarily.

I find this to be better than All Time Low and Yellowcard because they're better musicians, aren't overproduced, and it isn't the same old pop hooks and autotune we've all heard a million times before.

Overproduced? Seeing as how a major label released this, I'm pretty sure this would've been overproduced. And what auto-tune are you talking about? Where in a Yellowcard or All Time Low song is there evidence of auto-tune?

Just a quick question for you, with a line like "I wanna fuck non stop/baby I think you're beautiful.", how do you give this an "8" for lyrics?

1. Have you heard it? The only song that was a bit much for me was "Let's Get Fucked Up," which isn't even that bad. The rest is mostly stripped down, chill pop-punk.

2. I've seen Yellowcard live before, and the guy can't sing at all. There has got to be autotune on the album.

3. Have you heard the whole album? The lyrics are honest and unpretentious, something huge and grandeur would not have fit in well with their style of music.

So now we're making up genres when were going too huh? As far as Ryan Key's voice, sometimes some singers are just terrible live. Patrick Stump has a horrible voice live but on record, he's amazing. Maybe it's the same for Ryan. Again, as their lyrics are concerned, while that maybe honest, it doesn't mean it's good. I mean, to them, Brokencyde writes honest lyrics but does that mean they're any good?

Chill pop punk?

...and your assuming that since they suck live they use auto-tune. Interesting logic.

Chill is an adjective, bro, not the name of a genre. And location doesn't change your ability to sing. "He's better when he's singing in a studio." Yeah. And I play guitar better during the night.

That's just pointless, isn't it?

Believe it or not, in this instance, location does matter. When you play live, it's all about your energy. High energy shows(like a Yellowcard or Fall Out Boy show) are going to cause their respective singers to sound like garbage because the idea is to have a great performance, not sound like the best singer live. When you sing on record, the idea is to sing to the best of your ability.

I'm aware of the purpose of a live show. In fact, the first thing I listen for on a CD is how it would sound live. But there are much better singers then Yellowcard's guy or All Time Low's that can still put on a great show and not sound like shit.

There's absolutely no sense in trying to explain to you why sounding great vocally live is pointless and that neither Yellowcard or All Time Low use auto-tune(please where is it that they use it?).

There's absolutely no sense in trying to tear down my whole review over one sentence I wrote in the introduction.

Gotta go with Yellowcard and All Time Low on this one.

Start Trouble is a comedy band, and that's it. Much lower than 70%.

I still enjoy it.

EDIT: People hated this when they were younger?

Ooo, lost.

"Lost" is one thing. It can't be too bad; there's a whole TV show named after it. Plus if you once were lost, you can then be found. You need amazing amounts of grace though. I tend to get pretty lost in womens' eyes...and I don't mind being lost then.

You, on the other hand, are incorrect, an idiot, and abrasive. I'll stay "lost," thank you very much.

Auto tune is a studio effect that has been used for a long time, especially within the "pop punk" community. Hell, NFG has been using it for almost every studio release. If you think Yellowcard or All Time Low don't use vocal effects to give them that extra push, you're more dense than I thought. Auto tune isn't just the robot voice that Kanye and Lil Wayne use, moron.

I'm well aware of that. I've worked in a studio and am in a band.

That has nothing to do with why you're incorrect. And you're abrasive just as you are.

hahaha i remember seeing this band when i was 16 or 17 i guess, it was at krome in the side room, i wanna say opening for the reunion show, but thats a guess really. but anyway, me and a couple of my friends are right up front, one of them being a 15 or 16 year old girl (who looked it), and the singer stared right at her for the entire duration of "fuck non stop." creepy.

Great, welcome to at least 20% of this sites population.

That has nothing to do with why you're incorrect.

Don't be shy, darling.

And you're abrasive just as you are.

I'm glad we're at an understanding. You say dumb things, and I make fun of you for it.

Ryan Key can't sing?

Well that's news to me.

I've heard live songs, and he definitely has a voice. (In most live shows I've seen)

But I will agree that sometimes Ryan can't sing. There have been some live shows where he didn't even sing some of the lyrics.

Also, I've heard Alex Gaskarth sing Six Feet under the Stars live. I thought he was on par with the studio version.
