View Full Version : Animal Farm, anyone?

We just finished reading Animal Farm in my Exploratory Foundations class [weird, I know. It's English, History, Technology, and Fine Arts all in one class, so I get four credits in one hour, four days a week. Pretty nice.] Anyway.

I thought it was really good. I've read a lot of books with really weak endings, but this one was different. One of the few I might actually read again. Or recommend.

Thoughts?

this is one book I didn't read in HS...it's about like, anti-communism and stuff using farm animals, right?

Kind of. It's an allegory for the Russian Revolution. The animals take over the farm, but the pigs eventually take over the rest of the animals. One pig is an allegory for Karl Marx, one is for Stalin, and another...Uh, I'd have to look at my notes. They made us annotate the whole book, I guess that's the only reason I read it, but anyway, we also had to take notes on the allegories. I can tell you tomorrow when I dig them out of my backpack to finish up the annotations.

I highly recommend you read this if you're interested in talking pigs.

probably Trotsky. Sounds like more fucked up propaganda really.

Being Muslim, the only good pig is a dead one.

I enjoyed it. I found it interesting, and I particularly liked the ending. But then, I like a lot of George Orwell books.

I disagree.

I don't eat and live in my own feces. That's where I draw the line between clean and unclean.

I don't care if they don't have sweat glands and it keeps em cool, they eat my trash...I don't want to touch it.

eating them may be one thing, but hating them is completely different. they have brought no suffering to you, and live just like you and i live. if god hates em, why did it make them?

p.s.
i apologize for bringing this thread completely off topic

If you like that book you should read 1984 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nineteen_Eighty-Four) by the same author (George Orwell) it's about the entire world being divided up into 3 countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nineteen_Eighty-Four), it's amazing .

oh ya it's fine...it's just me and you.

I just find them disgusting creatures and you're right...they've brought no harm to me. All I've been taught is that it's sinful to do things with swine...and after seeing them I agree. Now it's more of my personal preference. Don't get me wrong, I don't stop others from eating. In fact, a friend of mine once tried to force me to eat bacon (he's all...down with faith and such)...that was pretty annoying.

I don't blame the Muslims, pigs are nasty.
And everybody should listen to Gatsby's Ribbons and Sugar if you enjoyed Animal Farm cause the album is partially based on the book.

beneficial or not...it doesn't not make them less aesthetically disgusting creatures with habits that would be destructive to humans.

monkeys have infatuations with throwing their own feces but people dont hate on them. i've only thrown my poo a couple of times before, and i have to say, its quite liberating.

people don't regularly eat monkey meat for sustinence. and monkeys are probably much cleaner animals than pigs. I mean, they're not actively wallowing around in the feces...at least they're getting rid of it lol.

I heard about it, almost joined the book club last year when bookclub was manditory. Sounds good, I'll check it out maybe this summer when I have more free time.:!

I thought it was an awesome book, Orwell portayed the analogy between the russian revolution and the farm extremely clearly.

I read Animal Farm last year (9th grade). We only read two books, that and Of Mice and Men (which I disliked). I liked Animal Farm a lot even though a lot of my friends thought it was stupid. But I guess I liked it because I've always been into history and the like. Plus, I got to rant and rave about scapegoats.

I hated the movie. It guess it may have something to do with me reading the book first.

Animal Farm was good (and just begging for a Muppets adaptation), but I didn't think it was great. I preferred 1984 and Coming Up for Air. The overall message and symbolism in the book are just so obvious and literal that the book never really requires you to think.

I decided to read this book for one of my essays that I had to do in my British and World Literature class. It was good, but I definitely enjoyed 1984 more.

That's why they make kids read Animal Farm first; you don't really need to think very hard to understand it.

When you read a book like that at a young age, you're taught a general overview of the Russian Revolution. As you get older and research it more, I, personally, think that the book gains more depth. With that being said, I like 1984 a lot better. It has more detail and a completely original concept.

I really liked this book. It's not very long but it's an interesting read. Other English classes at my previous school were assigned to read Animal Farm, but it's too bad that very few of the students actually enjoyed it...

I found this book pretty creepy.
Well, for what it was actually about, the book was decent. But something about the pigs got to me. I don't know, might have to do with us having to watch the movie too (which was terrible).

it totally reminds me of 1984 and Anthem.
Among the three,I like Anthem the most.
