Honestly haven't seen or read it, but from what I can gather there are worse things for children to be obsessed with, i.e. High School Musical, Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers etc. At least Twilight might convince people to read a book for once, even if it isn't a lit masterpiece.

I read the first book and thought it was ok. I didn't see the movie because it looked laughably bad.

Poor writing, decently engaging plot, gets kids reading so that's all that really matters.

I chose the first one sarcastically, hope the choice was intended to be sarcastic.
It was honestly one of the worst movies Ive ever seen. Laughable that it actually won like 500 MTV awards last night, but that's 13 year old girls for ya. It was the worst acting I've ever seen.

well, kind of. i just got done working at a barnes and noble for the past year and i can't even tell you how many times i had girls/teens/women come in and ask for "books like twilight" or "vampire books." if the things i showed them didn't appeal to them, they left empty-handed. so they're sort of reading, but they won't go past the teen-y romance-y vampire bullshit. it was so annoying.
 i pretty much just hate all things/people twilight after working there... ugh.

That's kind of what I was getting at...kids who wouldn't be reading otherwise are reading those books, and hopefully something else comes out now that the series is over that grabs their attention. They're filling the same niche and doing the same things that Goosebumps did for me as a kid.

I'm pretty much the same. The book was okay, but I got over it after about a month.
The movie was a complete sack of shit.

fair. but it's not really getting them into reading. it's getting them into vampire romances. it's not like they're coming in like, well, this vampire series isn't what i'm looking for, let's find something else to read, cause i want a new book! they're just looking for a continuation of the twilight crap. ehh. maybe that's my jaded POV from working customer service. ha.

never read the book, but i saw the movie, it had some cute moments, but i thought a lot of the acting was just okay, nothing special, they could have done a lot more with this story line in terms of acting.

If people like it, then that's cool. I know when Harry Potter came out, I used to get a lot of shit for being obsessed with it. If people like Twilight and sparkling vampires and werewolves with six-packs, the so be it.

This. It's like everywhere you look there are all these Twilight books and people are acting like they're brand new even though they've been around since 2005. As for New Moon, I think the movie will be much better than Twilight, or at least I hope it will.

This. Meyer is a crap writer, but the plot is alright, and it gets kids reading.

I hated the books...so I didn't even bother to see the movie because i heard it was even worse. The writing was horrible, and I really can't stand the undeserved obsession people have over it. But like other people have said, at least it encourages reading. It could be worse.

I'll quote Stephen King on this one, "Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”
And the movie... I wouldn't subject myself to such a thing.
