according to this article, coffee isn't nearly as bad as it is set out to be.

this is just a bit from the article:

"Consider this: At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson's, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones."

"A study by researchers at Duke University Medical Center shows that
caffeine taken in the morning has effects on the body that persist
until bedtime and amplifies stress consistently throughout the day.
These results show for the first time that the effects of caffeine
last considerably longer than originally thought, said the scientists,
and that caffeine exaggerates stress in people who consume it every
day."

"Drinking coffee has potentially harmful effects on blood vessels,
according to new research. Australian researchers presented data
linking caffeine consumption with alterations in the aorta, the main
artery supplying blood to the body."

-------------------------
"Studies have shown that caffeine elevates both blood pressure (BP)
and heart rate, which may come as no surprise to coffee drinkers
familiar with the lift that the beverage delivers. The investigators
found that caffeine raised average blood pressure by about 4 points,
and pushed average heart rate up by about 3 beats per minute."

"A recent study conducted by the American Medical Association said
women can safely consume about 300 milligrams of caffeine daily, which
is equivalent to about eight cans of Coke. The study also found that
if a woman's daily intake exceeds 300 milligrams, it could result in
fertility problems, a higher risk of developing osteoporosis and
breast tenderness."

"Coffee is the second most heavily pesticide sprayed crop in the
world. The use of intensive agrochemicals in coffee production results
in serious health and ecological problems...Furthermore, certain toxic
chemicals banned in North America, including DDT and malathion,
continue to be used in many coffee growing countries."

effects of coffee

bam *****. And ya they say it causes stress high blood pressure etc but you should keep in mind that all those things lead to other greater problems such as stroke, heart attack, and many other cardiovascular disorders.

also, some studies tried proving that coffee does not lead to addiction but they are misleading because all those studies conveniently leave out the fact that they're only talking about people who drink 2-4 cups a day. That's not always the case because coffee is such a social drink these days...college kids think they have to (like you) and it's becoming more and more popular in high schools. It has a compounding effect.

also, they forget to mention how much coffee can hurt you when mixed with alcohol and smoking.

lastly, there're so many studies out there that'll tell you drinking wine is good...sure whatever...but that doesn't stop it from being an alcoholic beverage...anything done in moderation is good for you, but people for the most part will never do these things in moderation.

here's an article that comes right from webMD which you cited as proof for coffee being good..

http://www.webmd.com/content/article/107/108583.htm

shows how coffee can lead to heart disease. Maybe starbucks should have defibrillators handy...

oh and to the original poster...maybe you should mention how your new coffee drinking habits kept you up till four am for a consistent period of time...and even then you couldn't sleep.

and how you couldn't stay awake a full let's say 12-14 hours without drinking coffee

mhmm, amazing drink right there.

im a big fan of coffee, and even more so of tea.
however to keep myself nice and balanced, a meditation session a day keeps the doctor away. ;)

okay richter, you're anti-coffee... i think you've made your point. really though, just about anything we consume can lead to averse health effects if we taken in excessive amounts (ie: vitamin a is good for night vision & the immune system, but too much could lead to irritability & convulsions).

i enjoy coffee. it tastes good & the kick of caffeine has helped me focus on some of my less riveting lectures and reading assignments.

yes but there's a difference between vitamins and flat out drugs. Caffeine is a DRUG! To need something like that just to get you through a day...pssh...we're young, we do not need it no matter how much we are told.

well, given the wide array of drugs i could've exposed myself to in high school, i'm glad i went with coffee. i'm not dependent on it at all... i just like it. i'd drink decaf if i could remember to ask for it.

i love coffee! it's one of the habits that i picked up when i started college. that was almost 3 years ago now. i don't ever have a problem with it making me stay awake at night, i mean it works fine in the daytime, but who knows.

this is actually what i get all the time from borders: KahluaŽ Mudslide Mocha: A tempting blend of espresso, steamed milk, chocolate, Kahlua flavored syrup, and whipped cream

diseases or not, i'm all for it!

hah i was one of them. i've been drinking coffee since i was in the 8th grade, and once you get used to having a cup every morning, it's really hard to be awake without it.

hehe... it's funny how starbucks has taken over the world. it always weirds me out when i see middle schoolers hanging out there. the closest i'd gotten to drinking coffee at that age was eating coffee flavoured ice cream.
