Downstate is (the city and Long Island) but Upstate...not so much.

Same with California, but the New York Senate has democrats with only a one seat advantage and even some democrats don't support it (while some republicans do).

Suppose it goes through the New York surpreme court? Any better odds there?

I don't even know the composition of the Court. But it's not like California in that sense, New Yorkers don't have the option of amending their constitution in that way.

It's really only the city that's massively liberal in NY, the upstate/central area is pretty conservative from my experience.

Also with all the great developments in the gay marriage arena lately, I think we should have an official Gay Marriage thread. Thoughts?

Looks like NE is way ahead of schedule in their plan to legalize gay marriage in all the NE states by 2012. Rhode Island is the only one left, although the state is so small and I think they recognize out of state marriages, so it's not like it really matters all that much if they legalize it or not.

As someone who lives in NH, I CANNOT believe this bill passed. I'm all for it- its just... New Englanders in general are not very welcoming of that type of lifestyle. Lot of puritan up here still.

NE are not welcoming of that type of lifestyle? I thought NE was known to be one of the most liberal areas in the US...especially since all the NE states, with the exception of RI have now legalized gay marriage.

Definitely in the rural Upstate, but Rochester-Buffalo, Syracuse, surprisingly Binghamton, Albany-Schenectady-Troy, and obviously NYC/LI are all overwhelmingly liberal.

It really varies with which part of which state you are in. NH is also very different than VT or MA or ME. We are considered the "assholes of New England". Very, very emotionally closed- and very unwilling to disrupt the status-quo of "values".

Do you know about all the libertarians that have moved up there to places like Keane and Manchester? Haha, I only ask because I listen to a podcast called Free Talk Live and they're trying to do this whole "Free State Project" and get a bunch of libertarians up to NH to start some kind of movement.

Hahaha I actually punched the leader of the "Keene Faction" in the face at a party one night for bringing a handgun to my friends house. They majority of the Keene libertarian movement lived on the street of the apartment I just moved out of.

I am VERY open to other people having their own personal political/religious beliefs and ecourage people to do so. With that being said, the majority of those people are INSUFFERABLE. They carry around leather bound books, regurgitating quotations and touting anarchy as the most logical form of "government". They constantly try to push their ideals onto people and get upset when New Hampshireites tell them to fuck off. I can't even begin to explain to you how unintelligent the vast majority of them are.

The two guys that do the radio show actually seem relatively intelligent. I mean, I get what they are trying to do and I agree with some of the things they believe in, HOWEVER, it's a total pipe dream. It's a fantasy as the world they would like to live in is essentially a perfect one where everyone gets to live how they please and no one "egresses on their neighbor" and there is no government, yet everything runs smoothly. In a perfect world, that would be fantastic, but they forget to include the human condition where people are cruel, greedy, mean, selfish and so on and so forth.

They are never going to achieve their fantasy world, regardless of how hard they try because it is just that, a fantasy.

This is EXACTLY what I tell them. When I brought up the point of who would assist me in paying for my schizophrenia meds, they say "Your neighbors". They are just unrealistic to the degree where I cannot take anything they say seriously.

And that's where I draw the line. I suppose I sort of see myself as a "light" libertarian as I tend to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal...but those guys are just crazy. Privatizing roads? Who is going to pay for the repair, the owner? Well then every single road you drive on is going to be a toll road so the private owner can cover the costs for repair. Privatizing mail? How in the hell is that honestly going to work for standard letters? Privatizing security and police officers? Okay, yes, that is completely feasible!

I mean, I adhere to their "live and let live" attitude, but there's absolutely no way in a country this size to completely rid ourselves of government.

Exactly. Their solution is to privatize EVERYTHING. When they brought up privatizing polive forces to me, I responded with "So if someone kills my mother- who funds the investigation?" Response: "You". I've totally given up one trying to have intelligent converstations with them. Half of them are sociopaths that believe they are heart of a revolution- so any opposition, be it even verbal and casual, is met with indignation.

I'm surprised you feel that way. Although I go to school now in Indiana, I lived in NH my whole life before that, and I think of it as being pretty liberal.

I think it's sort of funny how afraid people are of gay marriage. Quite pathetic in my book. Another good example of morons being unable to separate church from state. Whether a particular church or private organization wants to marry gay couples is their own business, but whether we afford the same rights to a group of people based on their sexual orientation is not. Marriage is also a civil institution and it comes with certain benefits. Not affording that right to some people is called one thing and one thing only: discrimination. All these homophobes are going to look as dumb to people in 40 years as the people who believed in "separate but equal" do to us today.

I'm from Keene, which is southwest NH- and yes, it is pretty much hickville. I have lots of friends from vermont who consider NHites assholes (for the most part) and same with friends in ME and MA. I really don't feel offbase at all- I was born in Concord and lived there for about 12 years, then moved to Keene. For being considered a "liberal" state, the election results are always very, very close. Don't get me wrong, I am glad that this bill passed, I'm just saying that with the exclusion of Concord and Manchester, NH is a pretty conservative place.

I was just going to ask you if you've ever walked the streets of Manchester on a Friday night? It's one of the few places I feel extremely comfortable appearing "gay", whether that's holding hands with my significant other or venturing between the bars.

I'm really surprised that NH passed this law before Rhode Island however, I've always found RI to be more accepting of the community, this is politics I guess.

edit: I take it you've seen Jumanji?

Well the price of living in New Hampshire is cheaper, it is one of the least populated states so it doesn't have to pay for huge school districts, etc, etc, so I would think that would decrease the need for these income and sales taxes. That's just my assumption.

I lived in Keene when I was younger, so I can't say much about that. Before moving for school, however, I lived, and went to college, on the coastline, and it's pretty liberal, at least from everything I saw. Well, I like the seacoast the most, personally, so what you do is live in Maine (lower property taxes), but work and shop in NH (no income tax or sales tax). Then you're working the system.
