listen to the song "I Shall Be Released" by The Band. they backed Bob Dylan on numerous tours and on albums etc.. it's a great song.
also, the new Strokes album is amazing. Ize of the World is the best song that they have written yet.
remember Collective Soul? Dosage is still one of the most amazing alternative albums i've heard. check it out if you don't have it. very worth while album.
and i agree with that other guy, (What's The Story) Morning Glory? is a great record, i've been listening to it a lot. do rock songs get any better than "Don't Look Back In Anger"???

Stream the EP Lost in Landscapes (http://www.hrempire.org/player.htm) by Holy Roman Empire which has former members of Arma Angelus, Rise Against, Shai Hulud, Hope Conspiracy, and The Killing Tree. However this band doesn't sound like any of their former bands, but the songs are really good. Alternative Press likened them to Longdistancerunner, Veda, and Rainer Maria.
Voxtrot- Pretty cool indie band from the Austin, Texas area. I have been listening to their EP Raised By Wolves alot lately. Check out a song here (http://www.voxtrot.net/TheStartOfSomething.mp3)
Beerjacket- Singer-songwriter from Scotland, Peter Kelly. People have described him as a "lo-fi Rufus Wainwright". You can download his whole album "The Great Unhappiness" Here (http://www.soundlift.com/band/music.php?id=104884). ALl of these songs were recorded by him on a 4 track

so i guess now that i'm awake i'll do some real recommendations.
architecture in helsinki - this band is cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute.
re-cognition - support the boston folk scene. please.
novi split - this is david j's (kind of like spitting) band/solo project.
therefore i am - last night was the last time i'll ever see brandon davis in tia. well, probably not. but it was the last time i'll ever "officially" see him in tia. (he drums for vanna.)
m. ward - i don't know what it is i love about him, but there's something (or everything).

well I've been listening to Hear Music's (starbucks record label) Sweetheart Love Songs compilation's all week so I guess I'll just recomend my favorites off of that.
Aimee Mann- What The World Needs Now
Clem Snide- I don't want to set the world on fire
Nada Surf- Au Fond Du Reve Dore
Ron Sexsmith- Moonlight Becomes You
Josh Ritter With Blake Hazard- Tonight You Belong To Me
Sarah Harmer- Home Soon (The Cherry Song)
Iron & Wine- Ab's Song
Rufus Wainwright- My Funny Valentine
M. Ward- Let My Love Open The Door
Neko Case- Buckets of Rain
Calexico- Love Will Tear Us Apart
Old 97's- She's Got Everything
Madeleine Peyroux- Give Your Moma One Smile
Sondre Lerche- The More I See You
Joseph Arthur- There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Mindy Smith- A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square
These are probably my favorite songs off both compilations. Every one of those songs is a cover song from equally amazing artists from bob dylan to the smiths. I would recomend checking everyone out on that list plus the original songs of the ones they are covering.
oh yeah, and listen to animal collective
