View Full Version : Message From Forrest Of HGB LOL OMG

Forrest of hellogoodbye (http://www.hellogoodbye.net) recently sent out the following message to dispel any thoughts that the band might be "selling out" with their recent fame and success:
alright, so hellogoodbye is getting some more exposure and such these days, its not like we're selling out arenas and number on the trl countdown or anything but we've just been having some more attention lately i guess. and sometimes i get messages from people who are psyched on it and say things like "weee" or "yayyyyy" and sometimes i get messages from people who are pissed about it and say things like "omfg you guys are sellouts mtv is gonna ruin you like they ruined fall out boy! i USED to like your band but now... now you know, things have changed and you guys SUUUCK! O'DOYLE RULES!"
well anyways i sort of want to address this attitude. i mean i don't get the you sold out thought process at all. i never have. theres no reason for anyone to think a band is automatically a sell out because they agree to appear on trl or something. its not like two months ago i was campaigning against mtv. its also not like we got paid anything for it ;). its something that was very excited to do for me and us.
its like, i think it would be freakin' bad a to play a show with hilary duff. i mean i'm totally game for it... if that was ever a possibility. i would be so into a song of ours like touchdown turnaround to be on radio disney. i would be so pumped if somehow we did have a video on the top ten trl. why would i dislike that? i'm into popular music, toxic by britney is a gooood song. justified by JT is one of my favorite cds. escape by enrique iglesias? sooo good. i think the pinnacle of success would be a to play on conan cause i like him alot. who doesn't?
i also like alottt of less commercial stuff, i dont wanna make a big list of bands many people haven't heard of, my point is just that i enjoy music from many levels of success. i do believe that music is a personal thing that isn't so much about good or bad but just about what connects with you. i like lots of music that is admittedly not the most technically impressive material, but its got a personality i enjoy. theres also lots of musically impressive stuff i dont care for.
at some points i do feel like im part of a weird machine of marketing and hyping and cashcow corporation. most the time it feels like, why does magazine X wanna do an article with us? its doubtfully because the author loves our ep. its more likely because we got tour Y and were getting hyped on Mtv and somebody's manager talked to somebody's agent who talked to ceo of something or whatever. and many accomplishments and successes often don't feel that flattering, its just like 'oh we're in top ten something in some magazine' and you know in the back of your head that it has more to do with the buzz than the band. or like you receive some notoriety and on the next page is some band you think is just terrible and it kinda kills the feeling of 'how cool'.
on the other hand, many things, including buzz and hype are generated organically like when somebody hears some music and tells their friends etc. and even to justify all that industry politics stuff i was talking about in the previous paragraph it can work like, some industry person hears some music and genuinely digs it so they talk to other people etc etc and make things happen for you. so its not all ugly record label business. or lots of kids genuinely like some music so the magazines write about them to satisfy the fans.
and i'm the first to admit that drive thru, and richard and stefanie, and the real world, and mtv and all these things have played huuuuge parts in any success we could say we've had. i know this isn't all about hellogoodbye and "we're so awesome" and "everybody loves us". i know its got so much to do with the people and companies that have made it so.
anyways, i guess sort of the point is that the content of the last six paragraphs doesn't matter. all i wanna do is make music that iii think is cool... you might not think its cool. i wanna play on conan and its fun to go on tv and i wanna be as successful as possible and i wanna have the opportunity someday to buy the house i rent and build a spare room on it and turn it into a recording room and buy lots of recording gear and have the luxury to take more than a few months off and sit and record and toy around and try to please myself creatively. thats my game plan for the future and if thats like totally selling out to man... i dunno...
if theres anything i can reassure you of, i guess its that i will always try to only make music for myself... or maybe chelsea too ;). but not for mtv or for a record label or for you even. haha.
i don't mean to write a ten year long thing here but its a big deal sorta so me and it does hurt a bit when people say youre a crapcuntselloutvagina or what ever people say.
xoxoxoxoxoxoxo, forrest
ps. you guys know like industry secrets now. not really.

I just like how these guys are getitng so much attention and they still haven't put out a record. At this point for me it's Put up or shut up. I'm sick of hearing about this band. Put out an impressive record then maybe i'll give a shit.

Doesn't matter, I thought they were subpar before MTV got a hold of em.
Agreed. I see no talent from this band, and I can't see why they're so popular.

Do I like Hellogoodbye? Yes.
Do they deserve TRL exposure? No.
Is it time for a full length? Yes. In fact, it should have been out in 2004.

Cute. I for one don't care if they really deserve this attention or not. Whatever, you know? They're destined for pop music. Pop music is catchy. They're a fun band, not a serious one. "Mediocre, unoriginal, blahblah" Tell me something I don't know and that doesn't describe half the bands that are posted about on here.

I love the corny sound, i love the cliche lyrics.
Hellogoodbye is just a FUN band, and some of you people just can't deal with it. Everything has to be something different to you, and has to be something amazing, something that is going to change music forever. Yes, it's nice when something like that comes along, but I'm extremely content with Hellogoodbye's fun cheesy sound. I love it.

it's really sad that bands feel they need to issue such statements- it really doesn't matter to me how many other people like or know about a particular band. a little mtv exposure doesn't mean the band is going to be the next big thing cruising around in bimmers. my friends' band had one of their songs played on road rules in 2004, & they didn't become ridiculously famous.

forrest can have that affect. but they're all actually good guys. a couple years back before they were on Drive Thru they played my friends Chanukah party. all they're trying to do is have fun. i really don't think there's any justification for hating on this band. anyone who cant admit their songs are catchy is either tone deaf or a liar. they're nothing groundbreaking, but the music is fun, and it's nice when you can respect the guys in the band too.

I like Hellogoodbye alot. I like them on MTV, I like them playing the tiny venue, I like them playing the big venue. I like them all the time. They can "sell out" and I'll probably still like them. I don't get that "party" feeling at a show unless it's a HGB show. It's fun and funny and as long as there are people who agree, it doesn't matter what the crybaby haters think.

This is a band that I consider borderline a 'guilty pleasure'... I mean, cause it's def corny, cliche music that is far outside of my normal listening realm... but it's so damn fun that I love listening to it. I mean, how can you not like a band that puts mario brothers sound effects in their songs?!
I totally agree. They are a fun POP band. They have the most fun playing music that ive ever seen
Definitely.. like he said, they're not out to make MTV, it's all about having fun. If you're looking for deep lyrics/sound/whatever, go look somewhere else.
It's funny seeing people talk shit about band ________ because they think the stuff they listen to is so God almighty perfect.

Hellogoodbye isn't the most talented band I've ever heard, but they are one of the catchiest. It's music that I can enjoy, that makes me smile, something that I can dance around to and just not have to think about. I don't think that's a bad thing.
I am ready for a full-length. Having to wait this long is utterly rediculous. They should have spent less time worrying about a DVD.

I still can't understand why I don't like this band. I try really really really hard, but it just doesn't do it for me. I love pop-punk and a bunch of drive-thru bands, but whenever I listen to a Hellogoodbye song, I just feel like turning it off and listening to something that doesn't hurt my ears. I can't tell if its the crazy voice effects or the terrible production, but I just can't stand Hellogoodbye. Somebody help.

i always think it's beyond rediculous when a band is called a sell out. even though fall out boy drives me up the fucking wall, and i'd really enjoy castrating pete wentz, i don't think i'd even call them sell outs. hellogoodbye did not sell out, they're just having some good luck lately.

Like people have said, they're a fun band.
But Forrest also has a LOAD of talent, especially in the producing aspect. He's amazing at it, and if I could get him to come over to Jersey and we'd make up fun, catchy stuff on keyboards and using drum machines, hell, I'd do it!
If you think he doesn't have a lot of talent, making all these songs, then you need to lighten up a bit and have some fun.

ok you all are dumbasses, he doesn't write music for you, he writes music that he thinks is cool. he is the nicest guy. no where does he claim that his lyrics are deep, or that his songs are technical. its just fun. he says he would love to be played on radio disney - you only consider them "scene" because drive-thru signed them, and oh my god, richard and stephanie know definatley what is cool and i have to like everything they like cuz they determine whats "scene" cuz i am so "scene" cuz i take myspace pics in the mirror and make stupid faces.

Its funny that you say that... I actually used Q-Tips today.
I listen to Hellogoodbye all the time, but nothing i hear ever sticks in my head.
But you're right, they play much different music... FOB is raw emotion while I feel like HGB is a mixture of repetitive techno beats and vocal distortion.

I don't really want to buy a DVD of a band i don't really like.
I'm seeing them Feb. 9th with TAI, Acceptance, and P!atd, which are my 3 favorite bands, so they better put on a good show.
And they play music for everybody? Doesn't every band do that? What band only plays music for specific people? I might just be missing the point.
ya their lyrics r lame, but like that other person said their fun....and their not trying to act like they r a serious ground breaking band....they just seem to enjoy playing what that play, not all bands can have the emo cut and scream about getting their heart ripped out or killing their gf......funny thing is i'm not even really a big fan of hello goodbye ....

Cunt is a fucking rad word.
I don't know why people take them so seriously. They started off as, essentially, a joke band. And I don't mean that in a "lolz omgz they are so lame they must be kidding me by putting together such lame crap!" but literally...from what I remember Forrest just used to make tunes in his spare time and then they decided to "cover" his music and they started a band. I remember when hellogoodbye's website was primarily Forrest's photojournal, not even a band site. hellogoodbye just kind of happened, they didn't wake up one day and think "lolz i'm gonna make music to get my mug on trl" so again, i just don't understand why people take everything so seriously.
I don't hate Hellogoodbye. Just their stupid, horny, obnoxious fans.

You don't like Hellogoodbye, but you like P!ATD? Contradiction in terms, much. Hellogoodbye do what P!ATD do, but do it a little more tongue-in-cheek with a whole lot more fun. I know who I prefer, and hell, I like both bands.
I fucking love Hellogoodbye. I couldn't care less what TV show they're on or how long it takes them to put out that full-length because their music makes me smile.

I love this band. they are fun, honest and sure... corny. there is nothing wrong with that. and the vocal melodies, catchy piano... i think its awesome. they have talent. fuck off to whoever says they dont. seriously. please, you do something better. they have worked hard over the years and now are catching some breaks. good for them! moreover... for those bitching about having an album released before they say anything, they have had a TON of songs over the 2 years. i have nearly 14 on my comp alone. I guess thats not technically an album, but fuck, its an album's worth of songs. it works for me. just search for em. they used to give em out for free a little over a year ago. my message for the narcissistic scene kid assholes... respect other peoples fucking music.

I feel like all of these "hater" comments are directed at me. I don't hate Hellogoodbye by any means. When I said "I see no talent from them", I meant that they have untapped potential in their lyrics and drowning out their music with techno doesn't help. I know this band has talent. I know they've gathered a huge fan base. I know they work hard. I don't expect deep lyrics from them. I even try to like this band by listening to them over and over. Its just not working. Sorry Forrest.

I haven't seen HGB live (will Mar. 1st), but their EP is catchy and I like it. I saw Forrest today play in front of the 75 of us at the Format show, and while he was mostly just having fun, it was clear that he is very talented. When it's just him and his guitar, you can't deny that he has an amazing voice. He was just hanging around the rest of the show, and just a really nice guy. I wish him the best of success & i really think the TRL thing was just him not knowing how to interview, b/c he was anything but arrogant today.
