Nick Thomas of the Spill Canvas played a solo acoustic show last night at the Uptown 'nightclub' at Bucknell University. It was a pretty unique experience- with as huge as TSC has become in the last year or so (and since becoming a full band), Nick plays very very few solo shows anymore. It was also a really different atmosphere- the majority of the crowd was vaguely familiar with TSC at best, with only a few members of the truly rabid fanbase in attendance. Nick compared it to having a crowd to watch him practice, but it worked out awesome for everyone.
The set featured a nice balance of old and new. The best-received songs of the night were all TSC staples- "Self Conclusion", "The Tide", and "All Hail the Heartbreaker"- no surprises there. The biggest surprise of the night, however, came when Nick pulled out a song he said he's only played once before. He actually had his iPod hooked up to his amps and sang over an instrumental track he wrote/programmed on his home computer. The song was classic Spill Canvas, but it was refreshing to hear something new being sung over the quasi-Postal Service-ish track. Awesome experience.
It really shows something that Nick was willing to fly out of Sioux Falls Saturday morning, arrive in Harrisburg, play the show, head back to Sioux Falls in the morning, and actually enjoy the experience. It was an awesome opportunity for Nick to play a show in the fashion that he apparently loves, give his loyal fans just what they wanted, and win a bunch of brand new fans in the process.
