Ages ago I heard some stuff by quite an underground MC. He was in the vien of Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, and the Ryhmesayers dudes. Because there's no way I'm gonna remember who it was; give me some recs in the hopes that I'll find him again. All help would be much appreciated :)

This is like the worst thread ever. This could literally be anyone.

Ever? Wow, you're a moron. It's simply a thread for recs for indie rappers, and if I find the rapper I was looking for then it's a bonus.

I also would like some rap recommendations that actually have meaning and don't swear in their music. Thread goes on.

So you made a thread asking people to recommend every underground rapper they know until you find the one you're looking for, and I'm the moron?

Ugh.
No need to be so mean. If you know any, rec. If not, don't bother.

Well I know a lot of rappers that "actually have meaning," but they probably don't rap about the type of "meaning" you're looking for.

here are a couple that i'm really into right now:

Busdriver
Murs
3 Melancholy Gypsys
Hyro Da Hero
P.O.S.

look up those guys. they're great!
also, go to htt://last.fm and type in one of the artists you mentioned, and look through their "similar artists" suggestions.

EDIT: this is actually BradsOneManBand, not VaporChoke (he's my brother and i'm on his computer. haha)

MURS FTW. He's getting pretty popular, but I still enjoy his older stuff.

Mac Lethal is good too.

I'm not looking for deep philosophical rap by any means. I'm looking for something other than rapping about having sex with every possible person and how you also extend that sentiment to other aspects of your life by wanting to "eff the police." Most rap music is awful, cheap, thoughtless, processed, and I was hoping to get something other than that, even if it's someone cleverly rapping about how they went to an ice cream shop this weekend.

And I think it should be possible to do so without using profanity. Am I mistaken?

Well, you're mistaken if you think that a lot of gangsta rap doesn't have meaning or that all of it is "cheap, thoughtless, processed," but whatever, I doubt you'll ever figure that out even if I recommended you stuff.

This is the one argument people make against Gangsta Rap that annoys me. Just because it doesn't apply to your life doesn't mean that it's all phony garbage. Most Gangsta Rap is just over-exaggerated machismo, but to think that there isn't any meaning there just because you're from the suburbs of Utah is ridiculous.

Another thing I don't quite understand is how so many people have such an issue with sex and misogyny in Rap. Don't you know what Rock & Roll is?

Yes it's music.

And you make a fair point. I guess I'm saying that the reason I'm drawn to rap at all is because I occasionally like the beat and the flow of it when I need a break from the music I listen to most of the time.

And way to bring in where I'm from. I'll sit here and wait for the next quote where you bring in the Mormon jokes. I don't technically have a problem with lyrics about sex. There are plenty of issues to talk about that would make awesome songs. Most aren't though, it's just about the act and that's it. And the fact that "most" can't even think of an original way to say things and have to resort to using base, profane language has thrown me off the genre years ago. Has anyone ever rapped about abstinence? Why would that be such a monumental undertaking instead of talking about banging hos in a club? I just don't buy into all of it, so sue me.

If you don't have any real recommendations of stuff for me to listen to, then why are you still talking to me? If rap is truly such a big part of your life, then give me some stuff to hear and I'll listen with an open mind. Otherwise, let someone else do it. Maybe you just can't?

Well, no, I can't recommend you a rapper who raps about abstinence because, and I don't know if you're aware of this, the demographic that most Rap is made by and for doesn't really practice it. I mean, you're asking for things that will probably never happen.

Anyway, you should try K'naan, A Tribe Called Quest/Q-Tip, De La Soul, The Roots, Common [Sense], Mos Def & Talib Kweli (Black Star), etc.

You'd probably like a lot of Golden Age Rap too, stuff like Eric B & Rakim, Biz Markie, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane etc. It all predates Gangsta Rap so avoids most of the cliches.

I wouldn't say I'm "touchy" per se, just not afraid to stand up for what I believe in when occasion dictates. And I didn't really expect for any recommendations on abstinence, just trying to make a point.

And I will listen to some of those at work today for sure! ;-)

Wow, so the proxy blocks a lot of stuff here at work.

But as a first track K'naan - ABC's is already sweet. And I loved the part where the guest rapper says "b-word, n-word, nah I don't need 'em" :-d

Well if the first thing you post in a thread is a dickish comment, of course you won't get the right reception. Learn to intereact with others properly.

Uh...almost every one of them 'swears'...a lot.
I don't know, Dessa and Cecil Otter from Doomtree don't cuss all that much; but to be fair you'd be hard pressed to find many rapper that don't. There's an English group called Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, they're fantastic although they're a bit cross over with electro.

Also, he Mac Lethal rec reminded me how much I liked him! P.O.S is so awesome <3
