Taken from a blog: "[Antony] sings like a bluesy opera singer and switches timbre from masculine to feminine in the space of a breath." Sounds pretty accurate. One of the most unique voice I've heard in a long time, which means that it's hit or miss with a lot of people. Big hit for me.
"Hope There's Someone" was definitely one of 2005's best songs.

Ahem: You didn't answer my question. Well, not explicitly anyway. I can infer that you haven't based on you categorizing those discs as you did. Indie dance music? Absurd comment to say the least. The New Pornographers is purely catchy pop and pop music (I don't mean whatever's on the radio) nevers goes out of style. It certainly hasn't up to this point. I gave a description of the Antony & the Johnsons cd and it also doesn't fall into any of those categories. Keep your assumptions to yourself if you haven't heard those discs. you could be correct. i guess when i saw new found glory for the first time, pop punk hadn't yet exploded. the blink-182 explosion was about to come, but pop-punk hadn't become the mass-marketed fad that it currently is. the early-mid 90s outbreaks of rancid, green day, and offspring really can't be compared to new found glory, seeing as those bands were relatively more punk in nature. now it's been done and played out. when a new pop-punk bands comes along, it's a novelty. it's like thursday, thursday was very good, but then we had the 50,000 wrist-cutting, suicide obsessed bands following.
i guess it's a matter of "does it bring something new to the table?" and if it doesn't, it better be damn good to make up for it.

seeing as you are implying what i have and have not listened to, i'm going to assume that you are ignorant and self-absorbed. i have many "scene" friends and roommates, so yes i have listened to those bands. i have been doing this "scene" thing for many years. i have spent many nights at coffee shops, shitty dives, and small basements. i have put in my time and am using a comment based on my experiences.

Since you didn't answer my question, I was forced to try to surmise what you had listened to . You left me with no other option. Since a few of those discs did not fall into any of the above categories, I assumed that you had not listened to them. Yes, I assumed - I'm not trying to mask that fact. I'm merely pointing out that you tried to pigeonhole the entire list and failed at that with a few discs. I don't care how long you may have been into any 'scene', honestly. That provides you with no more leverage than someone who just got out of listening to mainstream radio and tried to categorize thsoe discs as you did because in either case there were exceptions, which you seem unwilling to admit. If you have indeed listened to all those discs, then I assumed incorrectly and I recognize that. As much as you may not have been a fan of those discs, it does not mean that they were all cookie-cutter albums that fit perfectly into your system of classification.

So, if a band has been together for 10 years, they are relevant? No. You may like them, but to the mainstream, they're not relevant at all. In 30 years, 311 will be talked about by 311 fans, much like The Academy Is... or Panic! At The Disco. But none of the bands are the Beatles. None of the bands are actually relevant.

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that 311 has a much bigger/loyal fan following than either of those bands and will still be talked about many years down the road. 311 is much more than the occassional MTV hit. they have a huge grassroots fanbase in the likeness of a DMB or even Phish. that exclamation! at! the! disco! band seems to be all the new rage, and appear to be blowing up. so yes, i can see them reach the killers/fall out boy status, but you know what? it won't last. 311's success has very little to do with the few radio jams they have kicked out.
i imagine it's difficult to see if you're not a 311 fan, but if you follow the band for any length of time, you'll see what i'm talking about.

I like 311, and I'm not saying that these other bands have the same fanbase as they do. I am also not saying that 311 is no good. What I am saying is that there is very few bands that are not forgettable bands. If you are a huge fan of any band, you will remember them for many years to come. But there are only a select few bands that will be remembered by the entire music community. Years from now, I will remember dredg and how much I love(d) their music.... but I am not going to say that they are an unforgettable band. And it has nothing to do with fanbase sizes. In 40 years, will people be discussing Dave Matthews or Phish? I highly doubt it (maybe they will discuss Phish, but not DMB). But in 30 years, now-defunct bands like Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Eagles and The Police (among others) will still be remembered for what they did for music. Those bands are unforgettable.
