What's everyone getting/doing for their girlfriend/boyfriend for Valentine Day?

Since I don't think VD really means anything, we set a $20 limit. Just cutesy stuff. I'd tell you specifics, but then he might see it.

screw valentines. sorry, i'm not a very big fan of it right now.

but otherwise, we would have gotten random stuff. like last year, he bought me a stuffed lobster (because i love them) and i don't remember what i bought him. slightly like a birthday type gift, but one that means something mushy, i guess you could catergorize it in.

if that makes sense at all.

Actually, my friend and I declared it VD day last year since we were both single. Plus, STD's are always a laugh.

I have 16 bucks in my wallet and that is all I will have for awhile. I'm planning something big though. I'm going to buy her a rose tomorrow to throw her off. I'm going to make something out of her favorite drink (Snapple Peach Iced Tea) and do something awesome. I'm not sure. I'm really good at this shit though. I have swept her off of her feet several times again and again over the past 7 months.

You should go to one of those stands in the mall, and get her name dubbed into a children's song. She'll love it. Half the work, twice the awesome.

2 years ago - 150 tealight candles, 2 dozen crushed rose pedals adorning the floor, homemade chicken/broccoli fetuccini alfredo, homemade banana splits, dancing and the princess bride. Purchased, a diamond purity ring and a diamond heart necklace.

last year - found an empty apartment in our building, candlelight pasta and red wine, more jazz music / dancing, dozen white roses, packed up in the SUV, watched a movie on the laptop under the stars. Purchased, an electric guitar / practice amp.

This year. - Charm bracelet, expensive steakhouse, Timberwolves game (on the 13th) late night snack. It's hard to top the romanticism each year.

I'm not a fan of Valentine's Day so I don't really care to be honest. But I'll be with my boyfriend for 6 days after the 14th which is amazing. I can't wait at all.

I got her a bunch of stuff on sale online and it looks like I spent alot of money even though I didn't. As for the day, I figure an expensive dinner on the hill overlooking the whole city of Picksburgh*. I did the rose petal thing with a fall picnic inside a couple months ago. I dont think my V-day idea is that bad considering I dont have a job or money.

i'm not sure yet, exactly.
but i am usually really good at this kind of thing and think of something really cute and mushy that she really likes.
this will be our first valentine's day together and i keep hinting to her that the new matchbook romance album is coming out on that day, so i think she will get it for me... hopefully.

but for her, i would like to do something home-made i guess, if i knew how to...
it will probably be whatever she wants during the day, a nice dinner, either home-made, take out or downtown somewhere nice, and then rent some movies and sit in front of the fire listening to music playing solitaire and cuddling... yeah, something like that.

It doesn't have to be expensive to be romantic...if you look at my first year (outside of the gifts)

Fresh pasta - $2
Alfredo sauce - $2
broccoli / chicken - $5
Tealights - $10
24 roses - $15
burned Jazz cd / dancing - $0
Ice cream stuff $10

- thats 44 bucks... And for all you ladies looking for a nice, cheap gift... Zales jewelry has a nice little sterling silver charm bracelet with a diamond in it for $20. and a ruby pendant necklace for $30. Let your boy know it's not about how much he spends...its all about being creative with what you have, and how much love/thought goes into you/the idea.

I really do hate the fact that you're seriously taken.

I've never been a fan of Valentine's Day and I've never actually had a significant other on that day. I guess what I figure is that those types of things seem even more special if they're done on a random day. It just feels like people expect things on Valentines Day and what fun is there in that?

Good advice, but one question:

Where the hell are you getting roses for $15 around VDay?

Well, the roses I bought were fully stemmed and thorned... There is a rose shop by my house. They sell uncut, fully thorned roses 1 dozen for 8 bucks, two for 15. You have to cut and dethorn them yourself though. Since I was just cutting off the tops and using rose pedals... I didn't need to do that.

If you don't have a significant other, you don't really have to recognize the day... same way muslims don't recognize christmas or easter. Don't bash it.

Kara... I'm feeling your random day thing. I got my lada all psyched up for a date at the end of the month and suprised her 3 days early with it... Picnic style on the beach.... Surprises are the best. We do alot of unconventional stuff though. Neither of us are big partier's so we do alot of home stuff.

here's some other simple /cheap / free ideas for those who need / want them....
- whether its cold or hot, everyone has water by their house. Go to a lake / stream / river / ocean, and take a walk...if its cold, bring an extra jacket for the lady.
- the laptop idea in the car is gold. Grab some blankets and go.. Find a romantic place to park if you can...
- romanticism can be as simple as fast food.... Plate it up... make it look fancy.. It's not the food as much as the presentation.. Even if you are stuck at home... Lay a blanket on your living room floor, pull out some glasses, put out your most fancy dishes.
- Be lovey dovey (lame term). Especially if you usually aren't... There is no girl that can't resist old fashion chivalry. Open doors, tell her she looks beautiful (you should be doing this all the time).

Bottom line.. they will appreciate the effort. Unless they are stuck up yatches. Then you should dump them and find someone who appreciates a gentleman, regardless of his financial status.

my boyfriend and i never do much for valentine's day because he thinks it's a pointless greeting card holiday. we don't buy each other gifts or anything, mostly because we're broke. i'll probably bake him a batch of his favorite cookies and make him a card or something, and he'll do something similar, and we'll hang out and watch a movie. i totally agree with getupkid53 in that it doesn't have to be anything big/fancy/expensive as long as there's thought and feeling behind it.

I have this horrible luck around valentines day, I never seem to have a gf when it rolls around.

But this one time in 04 I did manage to do something special for the love of my life:

I bought her a Beanie kitten (she LOVES cats) and 2 white roses. We went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I had reservations for their Garden Cafe. Afterwards we wandered the museum for 3 hours, then walked hand in hand through Central Park, past the lake and the amphitheatre, where I hired a jazz trio to play her Ellington's "A Train" song (she rides the A daily to school), then ended the day with dinner at a nice italian place, where I again had this guy there sing to her.

It cost me over $300. But she adored it.

That's what my friend said while we were driving to nowhere after "the call."

But it still hurt. And what was worse, she had the nerve to try to turn all my friends against me afterwards by saying all I did was mess with her emotions. Mind you, this was a girl so insecure she required constant reassurances, sometimes as many as 4 times during the same date, and once had a panic attack during the middle of a Me First... show, and she used to drag me down.
