The sad thing is, one of my friends said something similar to this about gay marriage - that if we allowed same sex marriage, soon it would be allowed to marry animals. He's extremely anti-gay marriage, sadly.

I have a transgendered friend who started opening up about a lot of the shit he/she went through recently. It's not as much growing up with gender identity issues that fucks with them as much as it is growing up in a society where they're subjected to this kind of discourse. When your formative years and adolescence are spent hearing how there's something wrong with you, that's never leaving you. It's not leaving any human being. The sooner we move past the idiocy of preaching the infliction of harm upon people who are themselves harmless, the sooner we'll stop the traumatization of people who are just as capable of doing good in this world as any of us. For people who claim to be pro-life, there's nothing more anti-life than subjecting somebody to the kind of hate and vitriol they spew that can lead to severe psychological issues.

I'll never understand the far right's embrace of violence to breed conformity. That's pretty much the problem with the current makeup of the conservative base. A little too much Old Testament.

I thought it was hilarious, but at the same time there was an awkward note. I couldn't tell if the audience wasn't laughing as much as throughout the rest of the show if it was because of the culture, because they didn't find it funny, whatever. Colbert clearly held back a bit too, because even doing that bit probably pissed off a lot of the higher-ups in the military echelon.
My favorite part of that was actually his interview with the 2 random soldiers- I'm really glad he did that, and think it was interesting the way the arabic guy said that one of the main reasons he was serving was american racism.
