do i need a mixer to record my band into my comp or would one mic plugged into my comp and recording each seprate work

you dont really need a mixer to multi-track with a computer, but you'll most likely need a mic Preamp

I just got a Line 6 Toneport and it kicks ass for recording vocals and especially well done for guitars. check it out

Those sucks so bad, but if you mean in general, no you don't need a mixer you need an audio interface and a good production program, I use my Focusrite Saffire and the preamps are fucking insane. Try using a program like Cubase or Live those are two awesome programs and (if using a usb plug and play mic) when you record the drums to get the best out of them try to get your drummer to play the bass and snare seprate, that's what I did when I had one, it makes editing cake.
