Russia wants to mine a rare fuel, Helium-3, on the moon by 2020. They say its a non radioactive isoptope that can be used in nuclear fusion. Now I don't know that much about this stuff, but is this really necessary?

I have no idea if its necessary but it just sounds cool.

if there's more profit than cost then yes, it is necessary. They, just like the rest of the world, are tired on relying on Middle Eastern oil and definitely don't want to have to worry about American oil in the near future. This also gives the Russians an advantage if they can do it first. Nuclear energy is the most efficient form of energy but also the most dangerous so the thought of moving a radioactive isotope by rocket could be disasterous.

Something like that was in a movie where they did that and it messed up the gravitational pull and the moon fell into the earth...that would suck.

I bet russia is all over this, they need money, the poor bastards. but hell by all means, who needs the damn moon. if it gets me cheap fuel for my car i say go for it. i don't see any long term affects of this. well until it runs out? who knows, 14 years from excavation so.

I can't wait to look up at the moon and see huge radioactive plants

well considering that Helium-3 isn't radioactive

i cant see russia actually pulling this off

We don't need the moon?

No. Ocean tides dont mean that much anymore and we dont have to rely on it to tell us when to pick our crops.

we need the moon, otherwise there would be no tides :O:O

haha I really didn't know. I don't know much about that stuff. I guess we don't need the moon after all.

the moon sucks, fucking werewolves.

its holds the earth in a steady rotation. otherwise we would be like crazy mars and spin around on a perpetually rotating axis. that would make things cold and then warm and then cold and then warm. very bad news. be happy we have a big ass moon :)

well first, i don't think mining the moon would do any harm, and plus, you all must not have picked up on the hint of sarcasm that came along with that. but yes, i don't think that mining a fuel source will make the moon disappear.

if you were refering to me i wasnt saying the moon would be in any threat, just that it does serve a purpose besides giving our oceans tides.

these are just some sites tht talk about the moon and its importance and blah blah blah. worth a gander if anyone is remotely interested.

haha people really thought that??? ya cause mining the Earth for oil and coal for a century has made it collapse...hahaha

the part of the earth that collapsed, is still there tho right? just a bit lower than it used to be

I doubt it's noticeable though...could be wrong (but probably not)
