I'm so fucking sick of hearing about Jerome Bettis and how he gets to go to Detroit, where he grew up. Fuck, it's not that awesome of a story. If he's so obsessed with Detroit then why didn't he play for the lions? You know what would be a way better story? If Jerome Bettis lost in Detroit.

i completely agree with everything comatosa is saying, you know, you'd think that a team's first appearance in a super bowl would be interesting enough, or you know, that the city hasn't had a champion in over 20 years, or you know, the mvp of the leauge. that stuff is boring.

yes, the seahawks suck...hmm, where's your evidence? They have no stories? How about the fact that they've never been to a super bowl and they come from a city that has had no major championships since 79. They've just won 2 playoff games after going 21 years without winning 1. Or how about Mike Holmgren becoming the first coach in NFL history to win the super bowl with 2 different teams. Ya know, Mack Strong has never won a super bowl either. But you're right, the seahawks suck and Jerome Bettis getting to play the super bowl in his home town with a team that's won 4 super bowls in their franchise history is way better.

Jerome...going home.. WOW. THRILLING. I could CARE less. He grew up there..who cares. He didnt go to college there and he doesnt play there so shut up.
All those stories are more interesting about the Seahawks.. and Big Ben's story..wow thrilling, he was a 1st round top 15 pick...
how about Matt Hasselbeck who is a Pro Bowler and super bowl QB after going in the 6th round? I mean that seemed to be a huge deal with Tom Brady being a 6th round quarterback..

of course no one's giving them a chance. pittsburgh did beat the top 3 seeds in each of their stadiums. and maybe there's a east coast bias at work, as well. But can you really expect to get alot of respect from a largely narrowminded, only-know-what's-in-front-of-their-nose sports audience. A guy averaging 30 yards a game, hanging on just so he can get a ring without even being a solid contributer? Real cool story..
And it isnt about money it is about content. People on the East coast wanna read a story about the Steelers and this is all they got.
That means if the Heat make it to the finals maybe we can do a story like this about Gary Payton..

Except it isnt really a human interest story, it is just a fact with every facet about the game.
And that is easy to beat the top 3 seeds when you are ranked the 6th seed but could have been the 1st or 2nd. Seattle WAS the 1st seed so not like they had a chance to do that.

they beat Cincy without Palmer, they beat a rusty Indy that they should have lost, and they beat Denver. The first 2, I don't give them that much credit for, especially Cincy because you can't expect Cincy to win with a backup that hasn't played all season. The game was closer then it should have been even.
Against Indy, Bettis fumbles on the 2 yard line which should have lost them the game had Indy not looked so rusty and like shit all game. They certainly were not the team that we saw in the beginning of the season.
Denver I give them credit for although Plummer was due for a choking performance after their win vs. New England.
Although Seattle beat a poor Washington team and killed a very hot Carolina team, so who knows but I think Seattle wins this game by a TD or 2.

I hate when people say "it was closer than it should have been". that seems ridiculous, beacuse they won. and that's the bottom line.
and i agree that pittsburgh did catch some breaks, but others can argue that seattle caught some breaks by playing in the division they played in. but both teams can only beat who is across from then on any given day. and that "hot" carolina team was also down to it's 4th RB and had one offensive threat.
I still am picking pittsburgh, because it's who i picked before the conference championship games, i picked pitt/carolina (because i had faith in Goings before he got knocked the fuck out). But i wouldn't be surprised if the Seahawks won.
i hate how in the nba, people will pick two teams who WILL make the finals and discount any other predictions. i mean, they may as well end the season now, Spurs vs. Pistons, who cares about these games that obviously have no meaning. they're just filler.

Being a longtime Seahawks fan I'm happy with any national exposure, so I can't complain there.
That being said, I don't mind the Bettis story, I like him, but I actually wish they'd talk more about the rest of the team.
Where are all the stories about Ward or Polamalu? I want to know why Hines Ward is always smiling. I want to know what the hell Polamalu is on. Guys like that should be getting more airtime, in my opinion.

jerome bettis is a lock for the hall of fame. and yes his story is overdone. but it is far from overshadowing the rest of the super bowl. right at this instant, these are the last 10 stories/articles on yahoo sports concerning the super bowl:
1. pittsburghs odd couple (cowher-rooney relationship)
2. red-hot hasselbeck
3. holmgren's family wont be at super bowl
4. bus may make last stop where he began
5. seahawks soar to detroit in comfort
6. steelers stay home for one more day
7. steelers look to regain running game
8. no man like the "12th man" in seattle
9. seahawks gray looking for different results in this big game
10. steelers home field edge (should be number 1 but i missed it)
but then all you guys complain about is jerome bettis getting publicity? the seahawks are being shunned by the media?

He was probably good enough to start this year. He just cant play all 16 games. A starter in football means nothing. He still gets a decent amount of carries. No one's talking about Holmgren cause it wasn't until after he gave up his say in player personel his team made it to the Super Bowl. He gave up some say and made it farther.

show me all this media attention given to bettis. im not seeing it.
ive already showed you the article list on yahoo sports. you didnt respond to it. most likely because it showed your full of shit. do you want me to show the espn articles too? it'll show the same thing.
here we go, going right down the page.
1. taking control (hasselbeck and big ben)
2. big bens maturation
3. hasselbeck in groove
4. whisenhunt becoming a star
5. ken hamlin uplifting seattle
6. recievers deserve credit for improved seattle passing game
7. how do you stop shaun alexander?
8. seahawks van struck by gate
9. bettis returns to city where it all started
10. XL dream coming true for bettis
11. marketing big ben
12. seahawks arent just winging it
13. slighted seahawks plan to earn respect on the field
14. fans of steel
15. look behind the curtain and you'll find another team
16. rooneys of pittsburgh hold to their trusted path
17. seahawks get comfortable as underdog
18. lebeau still seeking first ring
OH MY GOD WHAT A HORRIBLE ONSLAUGHT OF JEROME-BETTIS-MANIA.

Ugh...
Jesus. I don't want to get pissed, but come on dude.
1. Willie Parker PITTSBURGH 1067 229 4.7
2. Jerome Bettis PITTSBURGH 327 100 3.3
you do the math. bettis did not have a good year.
Numbers lie man. Bettis was used in short yardage situations. He gets what is needed. Numbers don't always tell the story.

take off your blinders. ESPN is going to cover a ton of stuff. The featured articles are now expanding as the game nears, thank God, but right after Bettis advanced, that was IT for like 5 straight days. What we see is what the media chooses to hype and present. People are obviously complaining because they are seeing too much of this story. And if you haven't seen it, then oh. my. god. I don't even watch ESPN that much, but I read it every day and reading newspapers and non-sports publications and TV stations (local news, CNN sports, etc etc) that is ALL they talk about in this super bowl. ESPN and others are still hyping this wayyyyyyy too much, but where it's ridiculous is in the mainstream news coverage that only chooses to focus on one story for the bowl game.

well, they're mainstream news coverage so they're going to pick the easiest subject to talk about, and that's bettis' return home. i'm in michigan and i just quit listening when they talk about the superbowl period. this two week lay off thing is a fucking joke.

*rolls eyes* short yardage or not, 3.3 yards per carry is unacceptable. Mack Strong, seattle's fullback, is used exclusively in short yardage situations and he's still averaging 4.6 yards a carry. Vernon Hayes, the Steeler fullback, averaged 3.7 yards a carry. Sure, the numbers aren't everything, but they do tell a LOT, especially when you compare it to other players put in the same situation. Besides, after running speedy Parker at a line all the time, Bettis should be able to exploit the change of pace and pound through defenders for more yards.

you realize you just said pittsburgh has a very underrated defense and a very GOOD offense, right?
whoops...haha, you know what I meant. Anyway, the reason people don't think the seahawks have any good stories, which they do, is the total AFC/east coast bias.....yes, I said it.

jerome bettis is in his mid-late thirties (i think), pretty hefty, and has asthma. under those conditions he had a good year.

so is there any seahawk or steelers fan that can try to objectively break this game down and make a prediction? And by objective, I mean you might actually have to concede the team you are playing is deserving of being your opponent.
I'm being serious, not trying to be an ass. I'd really like to hear a Steeler or Seahawk fan discuss this game with a tinge of maturity because this really does appear to be a very close matchup.

yes, the seahawks suck...hmm, where's your evidence? They have no stories? How about the fact that they've never been to a super bowl and they come from a city that has had no major championships since 79. They've just won 2 playoff games after going 21 years without winning 1. Or how about Mike Holmgren becoming the first coach in NFL history to win the super bowl with 2 different teams. Ya know, Mack Strong has never won a super bowl either. But you're right, the seahawks suck and Jerome Bettis getting to play the super bowl in his home town with a team that's won 4 super bowls in their franchise history is way better.
So..because the Seahawks have sucked for their entire history they deserve press...NO, go choke on a dildo

i gave up objectively breaking this down right after the denver game. i've been a steelers fan my whole life. this is only the second one i've seen them get to.
i could spend all my time looking up stats, getting into useless arguments and talking shit. or i could sit back and enjoy the fact that my team has a chance to do something very special.
my heart tells me they're gonna win. i don't care about numbers or anything. are they evenly matched? yes. am i for one second gonna doubt this team that i haven't doubted all season? hell no.
i'm enjoying this. a lot.

I am sure this was already stated, but the best part about this is looking at where you're form.

They tell me you don't know what you're looking at. Mack Strong gets his carries mostly on 3rd and long, on worthless draw plays. Haynes is the 3rd down back for the Steelers, and also gets a lot of draws on 3rd and long. He also has ripped some good runs in garbage time when the Steelers were well ahead. These weren't great rushing seasons by either, considering neither hardly ever takes a carry when the play matters.
As for Strong only being used "exclusively in short yardage situations", he had just 7 carries out of his 17 this year on short situations.

I've tried to, but I don't see it happening here. One of the teams' fans are always on the defensive.
Personally I wouldn't be shocked if either team won. I would be if it was a blowout, but I think a close game could go either way. I feel like the team that controls the tempo of this game wins, simple as that. Both teams are solid across the board, and both teams are hot right now.
