Gods and Queens – [Untitled]
Record Label: Robotic Empire
Release Date: October 4, 2008
Who?
“Gods and Queens are a band,” says the group’s MySpace page. “They play songs.” You can read that as modesty if you like, or else you can attribute it to a calculated sense of ambiguity – the same type that would drive a band to name their EP and every single song on their EP “Untitled”. It’s not pretentious or over-artistic, it’s just songs by a band.
How is it?
Well, it’s better than just “songs by a band”. In fact, it’s a lot better – it’s a very strong EP full of heart-on-sleeve influences, and good-ass ones at that. If you kicked Ian Mackaye’s dog, he might cry a song that sounds like “Untitled 3” (and plus he would kill you.) “Untitled 4” is the kind of depressed rock Harriet The Spy used to make when they were in their slightly less discordant mode of songwriting. “Untitled 1” (along with a couple other songs) sounds like Malady, an emotional mess of rock with a singer-who-can-actually-sing sort of hidden in the mix. No song fails to excite, and all of it comes across very heartfelt. Plus you can get it on orange vinyl, which is just really fucking cool.
Recommended If You Like:
Malady, Life At These Speeds, Fugazi.
