Marilyn Manson – The High End of Low
Record Label: Interscope
Release Date: May 19, 2009

“Death to the ladies first / then the gentlemen / All sorts of tax-free-face-lift-abortions-nervous-break-dance / Satanic girls gone wild / Truly fucking suicidal.” Now which genius wordsmith could that be? Well, by God, it’s Marilyn god-damn-motherfuckin’-Manson, that’s who! And if these lyrics appeal to you, as they should to any devoted reader of great poetry, then go get your mom’s permission and check out this new literary masterpiece!

Allow me to explain. On Marilyn Manson’s latest cash-in, Twiggy Ramirez seems to have needed a paycheck as well, as he’s resumed his post as bassist for the band. Fans who’ve been keeping track know that he left in 2002, missing out on 2003’s absolutely terrible Golden Age of Grotesque and 2007’s catchy and overlooked Eat Me, Drink Me. The latter was a surprisingly interesting move into more modern musical territory, but certainly not a typical Marilyn Manson record (it’s more sad than angry, more alternative than nu-metal), and long-time fans would certainly acknowledge Ramirez’s return as something of a big deal.

Unfortunately, that “big-deal” status extends only until you actually hear these new songs. Basically this album seems to be nothing more than a document proving that yup, Marilyn Manson is still around. As always there are scary pictures of the Unkillable Monster himself all over the liner notes, and all the lyrics are written out so you can sing along to such gems as: “I can see my glass coffin through my tinted window.” Right. Good. There’s been no progression is his persona since…ever.

Even the song titles are generic, standard Manson fare; “Arma-Goddamn-Motherfuckin-Geddon” – which is like a rebellious 9-year-old’s dream come true, or a sequal to Limp Bizkit’s “Hot Dog” – sits with such classics as “I Have To Look Up Just To See Hell” and “I Want To Kill You Like They Do In The Movies.” Long story short – don’t expect anything new out of this album.

And no, I’m not judging a Marilyn Manson album solely on song titles and lyrics, because if that were the case I would never have liked Marilyn Manson in the first place, and would never have even checked out this new album. Obviously you have to take a lot of the spooky Antichrist bit with a grain of salt. It’s just that these ideas have been hashed and rehashed, and in 2009 there’s really nothing the man can do to scare us anymore. The music’s really tired (“Arma” is a lamer version of “Dopeshow”; “Running to the Edge of the World” is a lamer version of “Speed of Pain”; etc.) and there’s really no way you’ll listen to this album more than twice, if that. You could argue that “Four Rusted Horses” goes out on a limb, with a bluesy kind of guitar riff, but the fact that it’s awful kind of crushes that argument.

If this album moves you at all, it will be just to make you want to put on some older, better Marilyn Manson tunes. Nowadays he’s nothing but a nostalgia act – a caricature of his former scary self. I think it’s time for the obligatory reality TV show on VH1. You laugh, but I guarantee it’ll happen.

*Note: I feel it’s important that I clarify that if you’ve got the opportunity to see Manson live (he’s on the Mayhem Fest this year with Slayer, Behemoth, and Cannibal Corpse…for some reason), you still should do that. His stage set and performance are definitely worth it in a live setting, even if he does a bunch of songs from this waster album.

I'll take your word and not even bother listening to this. It's a shame because he actually has made some decent songs in the past. His gimmick appearance isn't catching anyone's attention anymore.

Hilarious review. There's no comment I can make about this guy that everyone does not already know too well.

I have to agree with what you said about his live performances, he does put on one hell of a show.

I loved the album at first, but after I listened to it a few times I have to say I agree with the review. There are little to no standout tracks, at least nothing comparing to his older material. I still like the album, but not anywhere near as much as I thought I would.

Haven't cared to listen to Manson since Grotesque, but I've never seen him live and am really interested to see him at Mayhem.

I remember this used to be the worst of the worst when it comes to lyrical content. And in some ways, it still is. But after what I hear from Millionaires and Brokencyde this just doesn't seem that awful.

I don't understand why reviews are written for albums that are pretty much accepted as having no chance at being remotely good.

Fuck that, I still am interested in hearing this. Manson is great music for exercising and for cleaning the house (not sure that was his intent, but I'm serious! I do both regularly so these attributes are important to me)

Umm well Manson's got a ton of fans, who when looking for a review of the album may come to this site, who are gonna be interested in reading a review and buying the album whether they hear it's good or not. There are also manson fans to varying degrees on this site who'd be interested in hearing what a staffer has to say about it. Not really hard to understand.

I was hoping the very same thing, as a long time fan. But this review's perfect. This album's not good at all. But hey, check it out. Maybe you'll like it.

It's not absolutely terrible, there are some okay songs on it, but for the most part the review hit it well. It sucks because I, along with many other fans, were hoping that Twiggy's involvement would help Manson out a LOT.

Oh I see. In that case, fuck it, I want a Jonas Brothers review. My bad. I mean they have legions of fans too. And if I were a fan of his work, absolutepunk.net (a site who has never reviewed a Manson album before to my knowledge), this probably would not be the place that I come to for a review.

Jonas Brothers ≠ Manson. Manson makes (or, more accurately, made) some great music. The shock value sometimes overshadows his talent, but if you can look beyond that, he makes some great art. I own most of his albums, and I've seen him live twice. I've been listening ever since I was 14 or 15. Also, I don't worship satan, kill small animals for fun, or wear black lipstick. Many of Manson's fans are surprisingly normal (from my experience at his concerts). /Mansonfanboy

And actually, to be honest, I would have no problem with there being reviews of the Jonas Brothers' albums on this site. I love the review section of this site because it's so vast. Small bands, huge bands, rap, rock, hardcore, etc. Even though I hate the Jonas Brothers, I bet there are some people on this site that would read their review.

I've been listening to it off and on all day. I don't like all of it (especially the Armageddon song, which is the single), but there are several songs on it that I love. The production is incredible. Very diverse, very interesting and aurally stimulating.

I actually love "Armageddon" a lot more than some of the other songs on the album. It's songs like "Wow" and "Wight Spider" that I find myself skipping. But I love "I Want To Kill You Like they Do in the Movies", "Pretty as a Swastika", "Into the Fire", and "Blank and White" a lot.

thanks for the unnecessary sarcasm. You forgot the part where I said there are plenty of manson fans on this site. Also, because of the traffic/advertising this site gets a fan who isn't a user would only need to type the album into a search engine to find this review, not actually look for the site first. It's a review by a reputable site so why not check it out? And it may be that you wouldn't come here for a manson review, but that has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not any particular/random manson fan would or would not come here to read the review.
