I dont like the whole one year contract though
why?
the sox have pedroia waiting in the wings (he was originally a SS, got moved to 2b cuz of Hanley)
i still think we could have traded wells/arroyo/clement for a better ss

alex gonzalez sucks, this is a shit deal for us. what a useless piece of trash.
i bet he doesn't get a second of playing time, hell, cora would be a better ss than this mo' fucka.

our starting pitching is solid. i mean, i know wells is gone whether we get anything for him or not, but clement and cornrroyo need to stick around. bronson arroyo is highly underrated.

exactly. the dude is a defensieve wizard (and a real one, not rentawreck) and it's just a way to buy time for pedroia. if he fails, they can probably throw pedroia in there by august. if he succeeds, then it gives dustin the whole year to develop more. this was a smart move.

uh, never say this again. what is your proof behind this statement? worse defensive skills, worse hitting skills?
a-gon hit 23 homers two years ago in a pitchers park and with castillo was considered one of the best middle infields in the game.
please never speak again. it's a one year deal to get pedroia ready. would i have liked someone better? yes, of course, but for one year and 3 million dollars, he'll suit us just fine. i don't know how this could be called a shit deal, i mean, did i miss giving up jon lester for him or something?

bronson arroyo and matt clement are walking bags of AIDS at this point until they fix their respective problems.
a-gon is AT LEAST an upgrade from cora. honestly, who cares how bad yer 9th batter is

This is a good deal for the Sox. They sign him relatively cheap for 1 year. Pedroia is waiting and should be ready by next year at the latest. If he does good in AAA then he gets called up and Gonzalez is put on the bench. Gonzalez was signed for his defense, any offense he provides is a bonus.

Pedroia is not going to play SS for the Sox. I've heard a few people (with respectable opinions...and have seen him play) say he does not have the range to play short. His path is most likely 2B where he has a chance to be stellar, but probably above average.
now on to gonzo. im not sure why eclipse hates this deal, or why he thinks Cora is better... A 1 year, 3 million dollar contract is chump change for the sox. They'll make that much in hot dog sales in about two games. Also.....by RAA accounts, he will be a better fielder than Renteria, and if I had Cora's numbers, I think it would show Gonzalez is better than him as well. last year, Gonzalez had an OBP of .319. While this shit it beats Cora's .310 he had with the Sox. Gonzalez had less in slg, but Cora also played in hitter friendly Fenway, where Gonzalez played in a bad hitters park. Gonzalez also had 13 win shares, compared to Renteria's 14. It's easy to say that with the upgrade in defense, and the help he will get from batting in the Red Sox line-up and from playing 81 games in Fenway, Gonzalez will match or better Renteria's production.
Good sign. now go get a 4th OF

I dont think they should bat him 9th. To me, it seems more logical to bat Youk 9th and have him act as the second lead-off guy. Im not sure if there is any analysis that says the 8th spot is more valuable than the 9th (maybe a few more AB's I guess), but it would seem that a strong 9th batter would make the top of the line-up a whole lot better.
I like this as a line-up
Loretta
Nixon/Youk
Ortiz/Manny (depending on the person above. I like the line-up going right, left, right, left)
Manny/Ortiz
Varitek
Crisp
Lowell
Gonzalez
Youk/Gonzo
I guess this depends on Snow, and other bench players. I think this works though. Crisp might be the #2 hitter, but I think that’s wasting a valuable person. Nixon is losing power, but can still get on base, while Crisp is gaining power. He is perfect for the middle of the order.
EDIT: If Lowell rebounds nicely, you may want to switch he and Varitek.

see the newest trade rumor
3way with nats/mets/redsox
Red Sox get: Lastings Milledge, Xavier Nady, K Matsui (I think)
Mets get: Livian Hernandez, Jay Bergman (Wash minor leaguer), some low-end prospect (from Wash)
Nationals get: Matt Clement, Graffanino, cash (from Bos).

pardon me if im not excited about a guy who has a career .764 OPS vs lefties, and who last year stunk the house (albeit, not vs lefties, but he also played in Col.). Nady has a better career avg vs. lefties and is younger. Also, he would bring us Milledge, which is a steal.
Though, I dont think happens. It seems as though we will move Wells, or at least try too, and if that happens, we need to keep Clement so we have 6 starters.

Milledge has constantly put up a high OBP at every level he has played. Stick him in AAA in 06 and then if he is ready, bring him up in 07. at 6'0, 185 pounds, we could be seeing our next lead off man.
getting ahead of myself, because fat chance this happens.

The thing that i could Boston being cautious about is trading Clement. Wells has asked for a trade already and it seems the Red Sox are trying to help him out there. If both deals happen then it leaves the red sox with a rotation of Schilling, Beckett, Wake, Arroyo, and Papelbon. Boston has made it known that they want Papelbon to start of the year in the bullpen in order to keep his total innings below 200.

It makes sense for the nationals to try and move Vidro, because Soriano is being a little bitch. however, I think it would fit them better to try and move Soriano. His numbers are going to suffer in RFK and he could bring back more in a deal.....unless of course people get smart and realize he is not worth the money.
Besides, if Soriano cant manage a higher obp than .309 in Texas, what gonna happen in Whasington? his power numbers will drop, making him less valuable than Vidro, who has a higher OBP. also, RAA has vidro as a better fielding second basemen.

Don't forget that Kapler should be ready sometime in May. If he comes back healthy, he's a solid 4th OF. He specializes in RF too, which fits because Nixon is clearly the weak link of that OF.

I agree. I want them to make the trade. I was just pointing a reason why they might not do it or why they might be cautious about it.

Kapler has not played well the last couple years. 2001 was the last time he had a slg % over .400. His career numers vs lefties are not as good as Nady, and Nady would bring us Milledge. Kapler would be a nice sign for the right money, though. This considering he comes back healthy.
