SMALL ARMS DEALER "A Single Unifying Theory" (Deep Elm)

Review by Jordan A. Baker

While Deep Elm's distinguished track record throughout the past decade largely speaks for itself, the band's heralded success with LATTERMAN in 2005 featured the label moving in a slightly heavier direction. Entrenching the label's aggressive tilt further is the arrival of A Single Unifying Theory from SMALL ARMS DEALER, a relatively new band from Long Island that features ex-members of the influential ON THE MIGHT OF PRICES and the underrated EXPLOSIVO! The connection between LATTERMAN and SMALL ARMS DEALER is more than geography however; Phil Douglas of the former recorded this full-length, and both bands share an affection for guitar-driven, roaring melodic punk that has a grounded, intelligent head on its shoulders.

Opting for dark lyrical imagery and seemingly, a near-fatal dose of self-hatred and loathing, SMALL ARMS DEALER smote the listener with a consuming dose of emotional weight and baggage - this is an album afterall that starts with the lyrics I'm burnt out like a corpse in a campfire.... Vocalist Jason Lubrano has a slightly raspy voice that tucks itself neatly into the songwriting, standing neither alone or buried under the power of the cracklin' guitars. One of the best qualities about A Single Unifying Theory is that the twelve songs are a solid mix of tempos and have great flow for the album's 32 minute duration. There are peaks and valleys, sing-alongs, crunchy guitar parts, manic drum parts that make you want to gyrate your arms in a reckless manner, and moments where the band is set to "chill" and brings things back to a more restrained position. Give SMALL ARMS DEALER a chance, especially if you're fans of bands like LATTERMAN, LAWRENCE ARMS, or SMOKE OR FIRE.
