Half of our class is going to be doing baseball..so I think Wilt The Stilt is going to be my second runner up..but thanks for the suggestions so far
If it helps..I need people who ''broke the color boundaries''...again, appreciated if it had nothing to do with baseball

How about you write a paper about how white people deserve their own "history month" and how racism can actually work both ways...

i did one on josh gibson way back when, played in the negro leauges, and was probably the most powerful hitter(i'd say more so than the babe)in baseball at the time, over 800 career home runs. and actually got his start when he came out of the stands during a game to replace a catcher at the time.

No, I'm not an absolute racist but I do find it offensive that they have their own channels, award shows, minority hiring rules inside and outside of sports. Don't even get me started on the NAACP...

I don't really care about Black History Month. It was established in a time when it was to honor their plights as a people and to honor them as an equal race of the United States. It's not like it was made up yesterday.
As for media, you complain about stuff like BET and UPN...there are white people channels. They're called PAX, the WB, Lifetime...they may not be explicity white, but that's the demographic their shows are programmed to. I actually watch BET all the time now because In Living Color reruns are on it.
On the other hand, there are some extremely racist shows on TV, the most obvious of these being Chappelle's Show. That's "reverse" racism at it's finest right there, with Chappelle mocking caucasians and portraying them as pathetic and weak goobers. Do I care? Nah. I think it's funny as hell. But there is a double standard. That's another issue though - it shouldn't be affiliated with Black History Month.

i'm not saying that blacks aren't racist...because some of them are...im simply confused as to why black history month is such a big deal to you.
the naacp is considered by some to be a racist group...i'd probably agree...but what's the big deal with letting them celebrate for one month? it's the shortest month of the year, let them have it.

Did it ever occur to you that WE isolated them from society and thererfore forced them to create a unique culture with a unique history to it? Don't pretend like U.S. History and black history are the same thing, because they are not. U.S. History is white history, so every month is white history month. For the love.

i have to agree with nfggc10 on this one. if you want to be treated as equals and not be seperated from the rest of the world based on your skin color, then dont seperate yourselves at the same time. sure, lets honor those african-americans heros and give them the credit they deserve. but honor them as human beings, not as blacks. dont put that dinstinction there if you dont want that distinction there at other times.

Yes, to have their history validated as equally important. In an ideal world it would happen all the time, but in this world we mostly focus on white history and ignore the rest.

how can anybody be against black history month and claim not to be racist? i agree, all twelve months should be used to celebrate history, it shouldn't need to be seperated. but that's the problem. there's heroes and important events that are brought up during black history month that probably wouldn't come up in a regular history lesson. and the argument that we don't have a white history month is the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. that history is taught year round.
i just don't see what it matters. if you have a problem with it, what's the point of arguing it? ignore it the best you can. it's not going anywhere.

Okay, I can see this strayed far away from my original idea of just a history project..but I feel I need to include my own opinion.
Black History Month...BET...NAACP...Black Soul Awards, whatever their called..and everything else that has black in it....they all have something in common...white people might as well put on a robe and burn a cross if they even think of having their own version of all those listed.
What Im saying is this..I have no problem whatsoever with the general idea of black heritage...I have pleanty of black friends, my best friend infact happens to be african america, so I can honestly say I am not being racist in any way at all...Yet, I feel they are exaggerating it to the point where its like...stop it, your black, we get it.
I mean look at the world as it is today...You dont see a single "white..." but you cant turn a head without seeing "black..."...that right there is my problem...we understand you are a minority, we understand that you had your struggles...but guess what, that doesnt make you so special that you can sue us for having the word "white" in a title, or so forth.
Arguements are welcome, just know you are not going to change my opinion on this until we get a white version of BET.........oh no, then we would be WET

the whole BET argument is lame. how much programming on the major networks is geared toward the african american demographic? so basically, abc, nbc, cbs, cnn, msnbc, fox, comedy central, e!, vh1, tlc and pretty much any other channel you can think of WET.
to the ones arguing about BET, how many times have you had the same argument about WE (women's entertainment), oxygen (another women's geared network) or telemundo. those are the same thing as BET in your sense of the argument.

well to go back to the first post, it wouldn't make much sense to do a Black History month report on Pele since he is Brazilian and not an African American
I guess I have not cleared this up yet, you are right
The project has to do with athletes or people who either A) Broke the color barrier or B) Did something amazing for their country that was unheard of at their time
It is highly geared toward the whole Black History Month deal, yet, after asking about Pele, my history teacher agreed that Pele did do something quite amazing, and he would let me go forward in researching him
As for the arguement previously stated in the first post in this page...WE is not even in this conversation...in the world there are two genders, male and female...not counting anything else you may want to add in, no explanation needed....however, there are about 50 gazillion nationalities or races, or whatever.
And you also stated some news broadcasters, even MTV, which by the way, was quite ignorant of you considering none of them have the word WHITE in their title as BET does.
All that said...I cannot make any arguement in any court whatsoever that BET offends me...they would laugh me out of the given state...However, any black person can walk up to a judge and say that the TV show they watched last night, the song they heard, the movie they watched...that one of these things was considered racial..and boom, instant case
