It's THROWDOWN (http://www.thetunemusic.com/2009/06/throwdown-brokencyde-vs-jonas-brothers.html) time.

Do you agree with the final decision? Disagree?

Is it fun/funny enough to do more of these?

I'd put my money on the JoBros.

At least some of their songs are catchy.

I think whoever wrote that is a moron.

It's like arguing the merits of electrocution over drowning.... badly.
I think whoever wrote that is a moron.

Um, okay. Serious question then. How exactly is the writing bad? Yeah, I wrote it - shameless self-promotion, but I also thought y'all might get a kick out of it.

I majored in writing, have had a few things published, and am a poet, essayist, songwriter, and reviewer. I'm not trying to be a dick, but I simply don't understand how you could label something "bad" and not have any evidence to back your opinion up. Then again, this is a message board...

Real men don't fight with music, they fight with fists. And Brokencyde have huge fists. They should've won.

I've always thought that when writing music reviews, the reviewers first priority should be in creating a piece of work which is entertaining in itself. Even if people have never, and will never listen to the album in question, it should give them an informative and fun way to spend a couple of minutes.

With this review though, too long is spent drying describing the exact mechanics of the music. When people buy a car, they want to know how it feels to drive not whether or not the three-and-a-quarter inch lug nuts are well manufactured.

Good bands give you a chance to use words to show how much you love a band. Bad music gives you the opportunity to have fun, or even, to be snarky, creative and merciless. It all felt a little too sterile, too mundane and lacking warmth, personality and verve.

I can tell that grammatically, you can write, but you just need to infuse more personality into your work, don't hold back.

Thanks for taking the time to give your opinion. I fully agree with your main point, and it is especially valuable when writing short pieces like I tend to do. I believe (though many poets in The Academy tend to disagree) that poetry should be the same way - keep the reader on his toes and using his brain with active and concise interactions.

On the other hand, speaking from personal experience and the complaints of many a fellow music-lover, reviews are utterly useless when they indulge the writer's acidity or, alternately, sugary praise. What I wanted to offer with The Tune, and what I tell my (only a handful currently) staff writers is that these reviews need to speak for the potential listener rather than the writer. I always research others' opinions and grades of the album before publishing a review, and take them into account - I don't base my grades off of my mere personal opinion, because that doesn't and can't speak for the aggregate of fans I try to write for.

Anyway, got off topic. Have you ever read a review or two that have simply blown you over? I'd love it if you could link to a few.

I don't know. I mean, the Jonas Brothers wear promise rings. No one with a promise ring could possibly win a fight.

Brokencyde, I gave them a chance + then gave up.
I pick the Jonas Brothers, if they didn't depend on Disney, they're acutally talented and one of my guilty pleasures.
