"Here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world," the former oil executive said.
But yet thats the whole reason we're over there, in a struggle for oil. I think someone is realizing that he will not win the "war" and is bs'ng himself to other options...

yeah really, there is no way to win a war on terrorism. and i do believe it will take a long time to ween people off of oil. we rely on oil for too much these days to just start taking it away.
"We will choose to act confidently in pursuing the enemies of freedom -- or retreat from our duties in the hope of an easier life," Bush said. "We will choose to build our prosperity by leading the world economy -- or shut ourselves off from trade and opportunity."
because we need to go to war to protect freedom? or isolationism is the best option? i think he likes to blow smoke up peoples asses.
but i don't know about the war being a struggle for oil. unless your talking about taking iraqi oil refineries over? cuz we get the majority of our oil from saudi arabi. which of course bush is family friends with.

We don't get the majority of our oil from Saudi Arabia. I hadnt done the math but looking at the numbers I'd say we get about 15% of our oil from Saudi Arabia, and that's the largest supply we get out of the middle east.

Our dependency on oil will continue, as the large oil companies are getting record profits.

Yep, if I remember is it Exxon who made the biggest profit of any company this last year. Oil prices surged on the fears of a shortage, not neccesarily the reality of the shortage

Not just the biggest profit this year, but the biggest profit ever.

dont even get me started. the speech was over by like 10:05, so they could have aired it right then ..but no, we had to hear a bunch of idiots give an immediate critique and talk about how many times he mentioned a particular phrase.
llittle disappointed michael j is going to die in a week or two though. i wish they'd put up enough money and have him make regular apperances.

Im not sure he can handle it with the Parkinsons. His character is great though.

They tend to be big contributers to the parties.

wrong. we get 15^% of our oil from the persian gulf total. i had to do a paper for my internship. 50% comes from other western hemis countries...venezuela, mex, and can and domestic accounts for 30.

15% is pretty close to what we get from Saudi Arabia. I might be a percent off one way or another but I've seen the current updates. The rest of the Persian Gulf might count for 1-2% compared to Saudi Arabia

yeah, you notice they never keep the screen on him for more than about 5 seconds at a time? It must be pretty tough for him to make it through even the shortest scenes.

Jesus christ, why do you guys jump all over Bush no matter what he says?
When he says we need oil, you guys go nuts about him wanting oil.
Now he says we should cut down on our oil, and you still assume he's got a trick up his sleeve or something.
Why can't anyone accept the fact that Bush is at war against terrorism? I'm not saying it's a JUST cause or that the war is good at all... but I am saying that it's NOT AN OIL WAR, and I don't get why someone always has to come up with some asinine comment about "blood for oil" or some such thing. We're in Iraq defending ourselves against homemade bombs and insurgents with dynamite on their chests, we aren't over there taking everyone's oil. Yes, the war SUCKS ASS, but don't turn it into something worse than it already is.
OK I think I'm done ranting for the time being.

What does matter is that we need to find a better fuel alternative to oil.
I think that's one of the most obvious things in the world.

Well yes, but it can't happen overnight. I actually am glad the President touched on this subject at all. We do indeed need to start looking for alternative energy, and I think looking at 20 years down the line is much more realistic than ideas being proposed by others.

nope. go to the doe page on oil. it says how much oil we get from everywhere per month.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/petroleum_supply_monthly/current/pdf/table37.pdf
i had to find all the figures for my boss at the nixon center to write a paper about what bush wants to do about energy.

that's where i got my info from
http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imports/current/import.html
It says........"The top five exporting countries accounted for 67 percent of United States crude oil imports in November ".......and those numbers pretty much hold true for the entire year of 2005, and if those top 5 are producing about 70% of the oil each one is producing around 15%.
My point was that A.)we dont get the majority of our oil from Saudi Arabia and B.) that's the most we get from any middle eastern country

you know whats totally sweet, this mat sci professor at Northwestern, Sam Stupp (pronounced "stoop") is working on nanoscale organic photovoltaics and i was talking to him yesterday, and they're trying to make them where you can spray them out of a can, and wouldn't that be totally badass
he was talking about how you would just spray the highway down (god think of the surface area of all the highways in america) and you'd have like capacitors at intervals or something, and then you could collect solar power from all the highways in the US, i mean holy crap the sun has a gajillion more joules than all the oil underground would ever provide, and it's completely renewable energy, and it's feasible that they could develop this within the next 5 to 10 years! holycrap! so exciting!
yea ok i'm clearly a sciencegeek. i won't deny it.
