Figures I'd be the only one in here. A wealth of great releases from this legend, been listening to Space Is The Place a lot lately.

I have a friend who's massively into Sun Ra, but I've never listened. I'm really not much of a jazz person, myself. Best album to start with? Should I just go get Atlantis?

I'd say start with Space is the Place, it would be better for someone starting out with jazz.

There's probably better artists for starting out aswell, Sun Ra is pretty out there.

Jazz is obscure now? I'm just Sun Ra wouldn't be a good place to start when listening to jazz.

And Sun Ra sounds like what? I'm trying to get into more jazz and the like, so I'm just curious as to if I'd actually be interested in listening or not.

Depends on the type you're into really. I'd say Atlantis to indulge your curiosity and Sound Of Joy for a taste of his earlier work.

First of all, jazz fusion is still jazz. Secondly, Sun Ra is far more frequently associated with the avant-garde/experimental branch of this genre. Are you suggesting all of his records can be categorized as fusion? If so, that's nowhere near the truth. Hell, his entire Chicago phase (roughly 15 years) was spent writing swing and hard bop influenced jazz.

Not that easy to describe. Most of his best work falls under the "cosmic/outer space jazz" tag if that's any help.

Cosmic Outer Space Jazz? How much of a leap is this from Bela Fleck?

Well for one thing, I don't recall any banjo work in Sun Ra's material.

Hmmm well then we're talking a pretty different form of jazz then, huh?

It's like a less organized and more psychadelic Fela Kuti. I could get into this.

Eh, sort of.

The african-like percussion mostly reminds me of Fela Kuti.

Was that song supposed to scare the hell out of me? It did.

Hmm, this seems like something I could get into eventually. The only thing that I didn't like about the song that was posted was the vocals, but I'm hoping that the vocals vary or that there really isn't much vocals in general. I will definitely look into Sun Ra some more.
