View Full Version : so depressed about my job

I studied finance in college, but since i just graduated in this bad economy, i only found a job as an assistant for a future hotel owner, and even this job was introduced by my friend. My boss owns some small business, but now he's focused in building hotels. They are located in Manhattan, however, as i just started working in the middle of the building of one of his hotels, everyday i go to the hotel construction site with my boss and try to negotiate prices with contractors, material companies etc. He wouldn't let me handle accounting since he hires a professional accountant(his sister).

First as a girl i think construction is not for females. I see other girls wear nice office wear to work, while i can't. I have to wear safety shoes and plain clothes at the site.

Second, i am not american, I have to depend on my boss for the petition of my work visa next year, and maybe green card petition too, if i stay in his company long enough(3 yrs) and if he sponsors me of course. My country is repressed and censors internet(guess which it is...). While I like the US, I also hate the fact that I'm like working in construction!

Third, if im lucky, i may be able to become hotel owner's representative once the hotel building's finished. If im not, i may work like right now in my boss's other hotel site from scratch...

The hatred towards my job seems to be overweighing the advantages of immigrating to America. I've only worked for two weeks, should I stick to it until i find a better job?

I had to sell furniture at Big Lots with a Bachelor's Degree for 3 years before I could find a "real" job to go along with my degree, and even then I had to relocate from Michigan to Florida to get it. The economy over here sucks, so the odds of finding exactly what you want right away aren't very good.

I can empathize with what you're saying. You spent all of this time in college, working hard and studying through the night sometimes. And then you graduate and enter the workforce. It's like, you worked so hard in college, you deserve to have a good job, right? You deserve more than working a menial job. We're all taught that if we go to college and graduate with good grades, we'll get a good job. That's what we expect to happen because that idea is ingrained into our very being. At least that's how it is for those of us with parents who expect us to go to college and are interested in our academics. Unfortunately, with the way our economy is right now, that's not likely to happen. All I can say is that you have to suck it up and take what you're given. You're one of the lucky people who have found a job upon graduating college during this economic crisis. It's not the ideal life, but you have to deal with it for now. Do stick with it until you find a better job, because if you quit and you don't find a job, then you're pretty much shit out of luck. If you don't find a better job, wait it out with the one you have now until the economy picks back up. The only other advice I have for you is to apply to graduate school. That way you can keep your student visa or whatever it is you have.

I am a sophomore in college now. I know it is not the same situation; however, let me put it this way. I'm going to be a teacher. In the COUNTY I go to school in, they just fired 500 teachers b/c of the economy. In the county I live in, 400 teachers have been fired. The budget is awful, and the school boards are doing little to improve them. I know everyone says there is a need for teachers. They also forget to say that there is no money to hire them. I have already started to scout out my prospects for a job after graduation, and let's just say that it isn't looking pretty, considering that all the teachers laid off are going to be my competition when I graduate. I know many who are this girl's age who are desperate to find work with their major, and haven't been able to find anything. So when I hear of someone who DOES have a job and hates it b/c they feel like girls don't belong in that field or are mad that they can't dress prettily, I have little sympathy.

If you're willing to relocate there are still a few places that are looking for teachers. That's actually why I moved to FL from MI, because there were no teaching jobs up there and there were hiring like crazy down here. That was 3 years ago and everything's dried up down here, but I hear some areas like parts of Texas and Arizona are still hiring. It's not looking good now, but things will turn around before too long. Something like 75% of the teaching force will be up for retirement within the next 10 years and young teachers are turning away in droves. If you can find a position, grab it and hope you can hold on to it because in a few years it'll be different.

It's always been like that with the education field. It's something that's expected - at least in my state. The finance/accounting/business field is huge, and is supposed to offer endless job opportunities. For the OP, she's not even working in her field of study. This isn't what she went to school for. She didn't decide to major in something that would have limited employment position or leave her living in a box (I'm exaggerating there). The studies she pursued didn't prepare her for this kind of job, so she has every right to feel discontent. And if you still have three years left before you graduate, then your prospects are much better than hers. You don't have to worry about anything for another two years and, if the current president is able to pull through with his promises, then you shouldn't have too much to worry about by the time you enter the workforce.

Absolutely. I never wanted to teach that level but when middle schools were the only ones offering me jobs I took it for obvious reasons (bringing things back full circle to kind of the original point). It's grown on me, I must admit, and the longer I do it the longer I can see myself sticking with middle school. They're still the worst though, and for all the reasons you said above, haha.

Exactly. First of all, you have a job in a foreign country where there are TONS of HIGHLY QUALIFIED people who are out of work and would kill for a sweet job like that. Second, your job, while it might not be what you majored in, has tons of potential and growth opportunities. Ever watch a little show called "The Apprentice"? Well, you're pretty much already doing what those highly-skilled professionals fight to get a chance to do. So what if you wear construction clothes? At least you don't have to buy a $500 suit x 5 (days a week) to be able to look appropriate in your work environment. You are living in Manhattan! I didn't see you complain that you weren't making enough to pay the rent. That's a pretty serious feat in NYC.

I'm usually a little bit more sensitive but your post pissed me off. Suck it up, some of us are putting up with a hell of a lot more crappy circumstances with our work situations.

If this isn't the job you want, just be happy you have this one for now and keep looking for others that are out there. Make sure your resume is spot on and oriented to the job you are trying to find. Always keep your interviewing skills sharp as well.

First of all, that wasn't the point you were trying to make through your pointless post. Second, how does the fact that I have yet to graduate from college mean that I'm talking out of my ass? I can totally understand where she's coming from and why she's feeling that way. You don't need to be a college graduate to understand why she's upset. Maybe you do, in which case I think it's safe to say that you're missing some serious kindergarten-level social skills. I myself am terrified that I won't be able to find a job in my field when I graduate. Third of all, I'm a senior in college right now so shut up and stop talking out of your ass (and how the heck would you figure me a sophomore? Logically, at my age, I should be a junior but I did IB and AP in high school which earned me a lot of college credits before I even stepped into a university.) And my post wasn't "dumb." It was well-articulated and helpful, which is more than anything you've done. Get the sand out of your vag and do something productive, kthxbye.

Edit: okay, so maybe that was a little harsh, but it irks me when people speak with such ignorance and arrogance. It's completely unwarranted.

While you were posting this, I was "doing something productive" at my job. Making money.

kthxbye.

Then go the fuck home and get out of America, because I'm pretty damn sure an AMERICAN wouldn't mind having you job or a job in general right now.

Oh.
