Jaws (1975)

A police chief, a scientist, and a grizzled sailor set out to kill a shark that is menacing the seaside community of Amity Island.

VS.

Alien (1979)

On what should have been a trip back to Earth, the Nostromo, a mining freighter, is automatically re-routed to a desolate planet after receiving an SOS coming from it. After the crew is awakened, they investigate the source of the SOS, and discover a derelict alien ship on the planet. One of the crew members is put into a coma by an alien creature while investigating the ship. But the alien parasite dies and the crew think all is well. But the small ordeal was only a prelude for greater things to come...

Since only one of those movies could even remotely be seen as "horror" i'll go with jaws, but personal i think its a strech to call that a true horror film.

As for best actual horror film of the 70's that’s easy, Dawn of the Dead, probably one of the most complete films ever made. Followed closely by Exorcist, The Changeling (though that could be labeled a suspense movie), and TCM.

Personally I find them both a little slow for today's standards, but Alien has an incredibly scary atmosphere to go with it as well. I'm not saying Jaws doesn't, but I prefer Alien.

What are your thoughts on them butchering this one with a remake?

Both had an impact on my life. It's movies like these that made me like watching movies so much today. I went with Jaws. I still have nightmares about sharks every now and then, for real.
