The new AP.net (which I am calling 2.0 (http://www.absolutepunk.net/journal.php?do=showjournal&tag=inside%20ap.net&j=1)) is set for launch in the near future. This version will bring a variety of changes to the AP.net environment -- all of which we have done to help facilitate how you use the website and bring forth the best possible experience. We know that "change" is confusing and difficult at times. We definitely understand there is a transitional period while you get used to something "new" after having used something else for so long.

However, we have retained the AP.net feel and look in a variety of ways to make this change easy on everyone. We firmly believe we have put together a website that is even better than ever. We're able to provide you with better content, quicker ways to find that content, and the tools to find what you're looking for in the AP.net world.

At this time we're looking for help in finding any problems with the website. This includes bugs, problems, browser issues, aesthetic issues (something not look right? Or not work as it does elsewhere?), as well as suggestions for what you think could improve your time and experience on the site (features, improvements, things you see on other sites or forums, etc.).

We are going to be reading every single post in this thread to make sure we craft AP.net to be the best it can possibly be. We have even bigger things in our minds for where the website can go in the near future ... so this is just the beginning of the next stage in the AP.net world. But in the end -- AP.net is for you ... the users. So what you want matters the most to us and we're going to do our best to bring it to you.

IMPORTANT: Please be as descriptive as possible in your posts. If it's a bug - letting us know how to duplicate it is extremely helpful. Screen shots are also helpful. Anything at all to help us diagnose the problem (browser, operating system, steps you went through, link to the page). Thank you!

Can you make sure everything is compatible in Chrome? It's a great browser that is become more popular, and some features don't always work on it. Namely the "Search this thread" function. Maybe fix the script so a searchbox appears.

Chrome is a horrible browser to code for (and until it sees double digits in marketshare, I'm ignoring its existence at the moment) - and reads code horribly (handles some basic javascript stuff funny) .. www.getfirefox.com (http://www.getfirefox.com)

Is "Most Recent Blog Entries" going to be retained on the news section? I find that a really useful part of the front page

Also, I've been having this bug on this version of the site as well, but might as well relay it here. When I try to give User Ratings on Album Reviews, the Loading message never finishes. The circle just keeps spinning, and I'm unable to Rate albums. I'm using Safari 4. I'm not sure if it's just me though...

I understand. I have FF but I like the slim, simple nature of Chrome. Hopefully it will become more mainstream.

As for a screenshot, there's really nothing to take; after I click the "Search this thread" button, nothing happens, as if I were just clicking normal text (although the "You are hovering over a link" hand appears).

EDIT: I can't wait for the music player! I think it will be a really good tool for helping people explore new music. Maybe in future versions, try to code it like Hypem.com's music player, which continues playing the same song no matter what page you're on (although that might not work for ap)

Is there any way to manually choose what forums you want to see in the Latest Forum Threads on the front page? Like I hate most of the Personal Life threads so is there any way I can just not have threads from that specific forum show up for me? And I want the Music Forum Threads to appear there instead. Is that at all possible?

And is there any way you can stop posters from doing this (http://absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=49643152#post49643 152)? It is the most aggravating thing to see when reading through a thread

First part needs to happen, or at least remove Personal Life, Poetry, and Classifieds threads. Being able to customize it manually would be great. Music forum would get a lot more activity this way.

As for your second part, well, those are usually only posted during special occasions for certain reasons, so honestly it's not much to be concerned with.

Starting to see the repeated picture thing more and more lately. Very annoying to see. It's not that bad if it's done once on the page but then when someone quotes a post like that it just gets aggravating

A screen shot isn't really necessary here: when clicking "Thread Tools" or "Search This Thread" nothing happens. The address has "#goto_threadsearch" or "#goto_threadtools" appended to it, but that's it.

i think it looks pretty good. Only thing that bothers me is the band names that aren't completely visible under the exclusives ending with '...'

also a minor alignment thing that looks a little weird within the text placement under the two main features at the top of the page.

Both points are just personal preference, so carry on. I like that the overall feel of the site remains, the change isn't that shocking, so thumbs up from me.

When I go to read the replies in a news post on the homepage, people's avatars are showing up for me in the middle (or close to the middle, in some cases) of the post, separate from their userinfo (which is still centered on the left like it should be). Oh, also the "User Info." link doesn't do anything in Chrome (except append a # to the address and take you to the top of the page), so now there is no easy way of seeing a user's picture. Too bad for the few Chrome users, I guess.

Clicking on a username (in Chrome) still takes you to the user's profile page. I am fine with this.

Chrome is a horrible browser to code for (and until it sees double digits in marketshare, I'm ignoring its existence at the moment) - and reads code horribly (handles some basic javascript stuff funny) .. www.getfirefox.com (http://www.getfirefox.com)

Chrome uses Webkit as its rendering engine, which is generally considered one of the more standards-compliant rendering engines out there (in the same league as Gecko, which Firefox uses). It passes the Acid2 and Acid3 tests. It DOES use its own Javascript engine, but that shouldn't really impact the design of the site.

Furthermore, Webkit isn't just used in Google Chrome - it's also used by Safari and the iPhone, not to mention many less popular browsers. Together, this makes up a larger market share than 10%, even if Chrome itself is only used by one or two percent of internet users.

I'm sorry for making an account for the sole purpose of replying (I'll make up for it by posting a lot in the future!), and I'm sorry if I sound like a troll, and yes, I DO know I sound like a douche, thanks for asking :(

Honestly, it's great. I like that it looks bigger. There's less wasted space. About Chrome, which was mentioned earlier, agreed that you shouldn't waste time on it. It's not a BAD browser, but it's hard to code for and just isn't popular enough to worry about. It's still missing some simple features of Firefox too, that it could add, while keeping the simplicity it has now.

My only thing is that I wish news icons on the front page were a little bigger. Perhaps the size of the exclusive icons to the left of the news stories.

But that's minor. Damn good job Jason.

Not sure how it's reading the text box. Screen shot?

/Sorry.

Really? What basic JavaScript stuff does it handle funny?

Not attacking you here but if Chrome makes your JavaScript fall over my guess is your JavaScript is at fault. I'm a software engineer whose primary work revolves around UI work in both Java and .Net worlds and I've never had any trouble with Chrome. My current project alone has nearly 1MB of (uncompressed) JavaScript (these are enterprise scale applications not websites we are talking about here) and not once have I had a single issue with Chrome.

I'm really liking it.. I guess the only thing I can think of is that when you see people's comments on the news and updates that get posted, if we could see the number of posts from that person listed like it is here in this forum, as opposed to clicking on the more info. part. No big deal really, but just something I would like to see.

The only issue I have with it is the smaller font, and the fact that on top threads on the homepage the user who created the thread can't be seen. Even if I'm not remotely interested in a topic I still sometimes go into a thread if a certain person has created it.

I like the changes, well done to all the people behind them - I know a lot of hard work has gone into designing and implementating them

I have a few minor reservations however:

1. Latest blog entries on front page? I loved that feature
2. Comments in news posts don't show age/sex/location
3. My dashboard is really cool, but maybe you could customise the options you want on it? For example, I never 'Upload Pictures', and yet it's the first option.
4. Multi quote in blog comments - although this wasn't available before, either

New site layout is fantastic. I'm definitely a person who is adverse to change, but I have only find the new layout to be a total improvement so far (and I didn't even have complaints with the old layout). I'm loving the easily accessible profile functions at the top right, the selection of streaming songs by various site admins, man it's all great. Best part is everything, for the most part, is still where it was in the past. The site as a whole is just a lot more aestheticaly pleasing now!

My suggestions:

1. Skip the pictures under "Exclusives." Half the bands have "..." at the end of their name because the column isn't wide enough.

2. If you're going to have the "My Dashboard" feature, get rid of the page-wide banner that says "AbsolutePunk.net" (which we already get at the top) and has "Welcome, [Username]." It would save on space and get rid of, what I consider, redundant material.

3. Generally speaking, less clutter! There is too much going on in too small of areas.

4. A personal favor: Bring back the black theme! It has come and gone a few times over the years.

I love the idea of change to the site, as well as the music player with staff picks. However, I think there are still improvements to be made.

Search function, search function, search function.

What would you like fixed about it? Faster index for finding new posts?

when i click on someones name it doesn't give me a link to their blog anymore, dunno if it was intentional, but i miss that

That information is under the user info menu.

i know this would be a lot for the site to handle, but it would be nice if there were an option to search in thread contents and not just thread titles.

http://www.absolutepunk.net/search.php? and then click the filter and select "search entire posts." It's just not the default option for reasons you mentioned.

I'm on Firefox... it's only doing it on the news posts.

A lot of users, including me, have been having trouble lately with the search function returning no results at all. Even searching for words that are plainly in the thread titles on the first page return no results. It's an intermittent problem, it seems like (as it is working fine now), which makes it hard to diagnose I would assume. Still I don't think that I'm the only one to experience this.

Aesthetically, the main page still looks a bit cluttered, albeit less so than before. So I suppose that's a step in the right direction. I'd say the featured band block takes up too much space and should probably be confined to the sidebar, but that's me.

When I attempt to move to subsequent pages at the bottom of My News, it says its on page two, three, etc., but the news doesn't change.

I love the idea though, as well as most of the new site! You should give the option to move around things on the front page, make it all AJAXy, so the clutter can be cleaned a little... Finally someone else. I have the same issue, although the front page worked for me when I log out, which does me no good what so ever. Tried it on both Chrome and Firefox. Don't know what's wrong.

Try again, Jason has been working on the bug and it works for me now...

When I attempt to move to subsequent pages at the bottom of My News, it says its on page two, three, etc., but the news doesn't change.

I love the idea though, as well as most of the new site! You should give the option to move around things on the front page, make it all AJAXy, so the clutter can be cleaned a little... It's a little hard on my eyes, and I like to have neat, clean, minimal displays (like the way you can rearrange windows on Facebook).
Fixed.

Not really sure if this counts as a "bug", per se... but on user profile pages, if they are a fan of an artist, the space allotted for the artist's name only seems to be about 7 characters... anything past that gets a line break. Which means that, for a vast majority of artists, the section looks squeezed in a bit haphazardly.

That being said, I'm not sure how it would fit/look otherwise, so do with this what you will. Haha

EDIT: Also, something like "Avenged Sevenfold" gets a line break, so it appears as:

Avenged -
Sevenfold

(with the dash). Again, not sure if this is fixable, nor is it anywhere near a priority.

Cool, I came in here to ask about that.

I also noticed that if someone quotes you and then deletes their post, it still shows up in the Who Quoted Me section. I know this has also happened for a while, so not sure if you're looking at fixing it.

Suggestion: I was thinking that the boxes posted on the front page would be highlighted or something for the bands that youre a fan of (for all those who only have a few minutes to skim the posts). A "become a fan of 'this band'" button should be there in the replies, too. You could also have a little icon for indie, progressive, punk, etc. in the bottom corner of the post (something like the icons next to the title of the post) because sometimes band names can be misleading and something so small shouldn't turn people off to checking a band out. I really like the new composition of the page and the 'whats popular' box although i think it should include 5 bands and not 2.

I haven't read the previous pages to see if this has been mentioned or not (hey, I am lazy....;-)), but I really liked how it linked the 5 or so most updated blogs on the main page. You could always find some decent reading when you clicked a blog title that interested you or you could tell there was a new blog entry by Jason or someone else on the staff.

Otherwise, I am digging the new design.

Also, it would be cool if there was a question box on every band's profile that they can visit from time to time to answer. The weekly band questionnaire is cool but i think that a separate thing like this would allow bands to field user questions in a more intimate way. It might also somehow encourage bands to frequent the site more often and create a more frequent dialogue between bands and fans.

Hey Jason. So I like the "Music Player" on the right side of the home page. I have a suggestion for it. How about link the artist's name of the song to their AP.net profile or MySpace? And how about linking who's pick it is to their AP.net profile (ex: "Jason Tate's Pick" If I were to click Jason Tate it would go to your profile)?

Lemme know what you think.

Tried to upload a new picture to my band's profile here. Now it shows just a dead link to what our picture would be. The whole profile is really out of date as well. None of our news articles are up (had one just a few weeks ago), no links to buy the cd, and the song on the page doesn't play. I'd love to utilize our page more.

Now that the User Info. dropdown works, I can comment on it:

I think it's weird that the dropdown stays dropped down after you choose to view a picture. I know it's just an extra click, anywhere, to make it go away, but it bothers me a little. I'd say either make it like the Signature view, where you can just click again to close the picture, or make the dropdown disappear after you choose to view a picture, since you're gonna have to click the X in a second anyway.

because opera > firefox >>>>>>> IE

Latest version of Opera?
I'm using 9.64, pretty sure it's the latest version.

I think it's something to do with the "In stores now" under the band pictures because when the page first loads everything is fine, but then the "in stores now" shows up and makes everything shift over.

I few minor things:
1) The "Private Message" yellow bar should disappear when you are reading your last unread private message, not at the next page you visit. It feels like I still have an unread private message when I'm reading my last unread one.

2) The "# Quoted Message" link in the headbar doesn't seem to change right away when I go to my quoted messages. It stays like it is (i.e., with "1 Quoted Message") even when all my quoted messages have been checked. It eventually goes away (in like 20 minutes) but I don't see why it wouldn't update immediately.

I have a suggestion for the mobile version: could you make the page numbers bigger? I'm using an iPhone and it's hard to select the right one. You could just make the size bigger or make it a pull-down menu like the navigation so that the big scrolling thing pops up.

I can no longer reply to Private Messages. I first noticed a couple days ago (it worked before that time). Clicking on "Reply" has no effect, though I the "Forward" link still works.

It's not a problem, but hovering over the area above (^) in the UserCP allowed me to see how many page views a thread had. Is there any way to still have that option? I liked to gauge how popular certain threads were.
