Look! I'm A Ghost - A Life Aquatic
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: August 18, 2008
Who?
An unfortunately now-disbanded pop rock group from Southeast England. They released this nautical-themed EP in August 2008 before splitting up early the next year.
How is it?
Excellent. Each of the four tracks contains solid vocals, creative drumming and angular guitar riffs which provide the backing to these catchy songs. The EP lyrically follows the theme of life on a boat, but this theme is not overwhelmingly prevalent throughout, and singer Edward Thomas' vocals carry the songs well with his slight British twang.
The band's precision in these songs is much greater than their name's punctuation would suggest, as the guitars and drums work perfectly in unison to create the skilful instrumentals. You won't find typical pop-punk power chords here, but instead, more technical guitar and drum work, most notably shown during the introduction to "Sharks".
The choruses are naturally catchy, but it's the female guest vocals in "Sharks" and "All Along The Waterfront" that make these particularly memorable, and separate them from the rest of the EP and its similar pop punk competition in general. A Life Aquatic is a very strong offering from the British quintet that easily rivals offerings from their more established American rivals.
You Me At Six; Tonight Is Goodbye; sailing
