View Full Version : Nintendo once again leads the way with innovation: cheat mode
http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/06/19/0514228/New-Super-Mario-Bros-Wii-To-Include-Official-Cheat?art_pos=4
Interesting for sure. Essentially if you turn on cheat mode on the fly then it will walk you through the game (until you turn it off).
I love the idea.. it cuts out the middle step of hitting up GameFAQs.com.
Of course I won't sit there and let it beat games for me, but for a (once hardcore) casual gamer like myself, this is awesome. When I was 7 years old, I didn't mind dying for five hours and trying to find that missing key. I had all the time in the world, and it was fun. I'm now 23, and if a game is holding me up for more than 20 minutes then I'm going to a guide and moving on.
There's so many awesome games out there, I want to experience as many as possible.. and a feature like this would be super beneficial to that end.
Props, Nintendo.

Wow I think that sounds like an awful fucking idea. A challenge in a game is the best part unless you're deadkidsean'ing your controllers.

I don't think that's a bad idea at all. It's no different than going and looking at the game guide, like he said. I don't play games much anymore, but I remember always thinking it was a waste of money if I couldn't play a whole game. Maybe I just suck at video games though...

I don't play much anymore.
I played A Link to the Past for GBA though on my ride to Bonnaroo and got completely stuck. My battery was dying, and I didn't want to waste an hour backtracking through the towns to find out what I missed. I put the game down.
If "cheat mode" were available then, I could've found out what I was missing and gone on with the game. I don't want to spend an hour wandering aimlessly.
Sounds great to me.

It's great for casual gamers, but hardcore gamers will not like this in the slightest. I personally don't care because I don't think I would use it at all.

That's the beauty. No one is forcing you to use it.. it's like no one is forcing you to play on "Can I Play Daddy?" or "Super Easy" modes :)
I think it's a great idea. If casual gamers need some help and don't know about sites like GameFAQs then this is a perfect solution. By the way if you ever need me to watch a movie for you, or test your iPhone apps or fuck your girlfriend, I'll be more than happy to help.

I don't see why people would care. People aren't being forced to use it, it's just an option available. If you want the satisfaction of beating it on your own, you can still have that. And otherwise if you've played a part fifty times and are getting sick of it and want to move on and see the rest of the game, it's a great way to bypass your frustration and just fucking get on with it already. I think that's awesome. That way everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the game in their own way.
I'm sure there are people who will bitch just to bitch, because they can't possibly see how people can enjoy a game without challenging themselves to death and will proclaim them not real gamers. I know the idiots on the GameSpot forums will harass a person looking for a cheat code before they lift a finger to help. Personally, I have beaten many games without cheats and I have also beaten several games with cheats. I am in gaming for the experience, not for the challenge, and if I feel like I'm at the point where I could either cheat to see the rest of the game or give up on it, I'm going to cheat. I'm not going to brag to people, of course, but I can at least say I reached the end and saw the wonderful world the developers had to offer.
Just for clarification though, this is in regards to single-player games. I don't condone cheating in multiplayer games, obviously, because there the whole point is certainly to demonstrate skill. Cheating there is just stupid and ruining the fun for everyone else, and also proves nothing on your part except that you are a dick.

it's not like this 'option' is mandatory. You can turn it on or off. therefore you can play the game any way you like. this would have been helpful zelda on wii. game took me 3 days to get past the first 10 minutes

putting this feature in the game saves money + paper that would be used to make 87465 guides. smart business in my opinion. they save money and the environment. 2 birds 1 stone.

I was thinking that. We know this is going to be used in first-party games, and if you get stuck on New Super Fucking Mario Bros then you probably shouldn't be playing games in the first place. All you have to do is go right. How can this game possibly need a demo mode.

Most companies don't put out their own game guides and if they do they clearly make bank. How you can insist any company loses money by selling as simple of a product to produce as a guide is beyond me.
and gamefaqs.com is free so use that if you think you're saving the environment by not purchasing guides.
A huge part of playing video games is meant to have the sense of accomplishment that you actually completed something on your own.

I don't think it's a bad idea because of the fact that it's only an option, but I can see that Nintendo is giving the naysayers more fuel to the argument that that they are becoming a (largely) casual gaming company. I would be hard pressed to see Microsoft implementing this feature in the games it develops even if they thought of the idea in the first place.

You know, kids play video games too. And kids might need some help. Little 7-year old Johnny might not have the mad skillz that you do, but he wants to have fun too enjoying the game. Video games are not always about competition for everyone, or bragging rights.
A huge part of playing video games is meant to have the sense of accomplishment that you actually completed something on your own.
And for some people, that's simply not that important. For some people, playing a video game can be the equivalent of sitting down with a good book. I don't feel especially proud for getting through a new Discworld novel, but I enjoyed the time I spent with it. Same thing with video games, especially if you are an adventure or RPG fan. Sometimes you just want to enjoy the experience, not necessarily the satisfaction of challenge. Everyone has different motives for playing a game.
I don't see why people are pissed. You don't have to use it. In fact, if anything this actually opens up the doors for games to get harder because if a section is too hard for someone, all they have to do is turn on the demo mode and they get past it. Difficulty levels were made in order to keep casual gamers in mind. Having a cheat mode negates the purpose of having a lower difficulty level. Therefore, having a built-in cheat system allows for games to offer more difficult challenges.

Video games are supposed to be an immersive experience. I'm all for aids in games when they're done right. Mirror's Edge had the right idea despite the actual feature not working to the best possible degree in all circumstances. I rather the game tell what I have to do or where I have to go than literally sit there and watch the game do it to me. Some games allow you to lower the difficulty at your own free will. That is a much better feature than me getting stuck at a point, letting the game play itself and then picking up after that section. I'd watch a movie if I wanted to watch something.
This feature is meant to appeal to little kids playing games that are either just flat out horrible at games or playing something that was clearly not made for their age group.
The point is, there are a lot of other things Nintendo could do to make games more friendly rather than letting the game play itself when it becomes too difficult.

haha this thread is pretty entertaining, but the fact still is that cheat codes/modes are nothing new. this is not innovative in the slightest.
also, i don't see the big deal of having cheats built into the system rather than looking online or in books. the end result is still the same. use it if you want, or don't. no need to turn this into a gaming dick swinging contest.

If you actually read my other posts you'd clearly see I support changing difficulties in games over this new feature.
Because you haven't adequately explained why.
I simply believe there are better, more immersive ways that companies can make games easier without literally having the game skip sections. Gears of War 2 is a good example of letting people play together on different difficulties if the two players are not evenly skilled.
Adeniz19
06/19/09, 10:14 AM
If you actually read my other posts you'd clearly see I support changing difficulties in games over this new feature.
But there is absolutely no difference between the two. Having a cheat mode is not going to change how you play in expert mode. The quality of games aren't going to go down. If you choose not to use this OPTION, it isn't going to ruin your gaming experience. Just see this as another form of a difficulty setting for extremely lazy people.
Don't get me wrong, I really don't like cheats and I think if you are going to play a game, you should actually fucking play it, but this isn't going to lower the quality of gaming. Its just something for the casual gamer that can simply be overlooked by the more experienced person.

I can see where you're coming from, I just really don't like this idea. With how expensive games are these days I want to get the absolute most I can out of a game. At least with actual cheats you still play through the game, you know?
I used to work at GameStop and this must be a new revolution with gaming because it was never a concern when I was growing up but parents would constantly ask me how difficult a game would be for a kid of a certain age. I guess Nintendo is just conforming to the way the gaming market is changing.

Cheats and faqs have always been around, you had the option of using them then, and when nintendo starts implying this in games, you will have the option of using it or not. Big fucking whoop if they are adding it to games, just don't use the mode if you don't want to.
play paper mario, beat the whole thing in under a yr on wii. games not easy. just bc wii is kid friendly doesn't mean the games are made for idiots.
I never said they were made for idiots, I said they weren't hard. When was the last time anyone here was stuck on a 2D Mario game?
You know, kids play video games too. And kids might need some help. Little 7-year old Johnny might not have the mad skillz that you do, but he wants to have fun too enjoying the game. Video games are not always about competition for everyone, or bragging rights.
I think you under-estimate how good kids are at games.

It's just reasoning, obviously there are exceptions. I was pretty good at video games. Although my first video game, Super Mario Bros., took me about a year to beat.

I still don't get why you care so much about what other people do.
Gears of War 2 is a good example of letting people play together on different difficulties if the two players are not evenly skilled.
But that's different, that is a multiplayer feature. That I understand. We're solely talking about single-player games here. You and the console, no one else.

I don't care at all what other people do. If they want to spend fifty dollars and let a game play itself then they can go for it. I just hate seeing a company I once loved constantly making decisions that only further push it into a casual gaming sphere and alienating the people that it used to make games for.

The joke's on you then, because Nintendo has always made games for casual gamers. It's just that back in the NES and SNES days, there was no such thing as a casual gamer. But Nintendo still cranked out the same games it does now, just in less amounts. Super Mario World wasn't mind-numbingly difficult, for example. Just like now when they pump out Super Mario Galaxy 2, it won't be mind-numbingly difficult either. On the other hand, I'm sure Sin & Punishment 2 when it comes out will be.
Don't get me wrong, I do see your point. Obviously having a built-in cheat like this can be looked at as a way to get more non-gamers into gaming. On the other hand, you could kind of look at it like a gateway drug. It might get them interested in more challenging games. Also, I don't think that this is strictly for casual gamers. I'm intrigued by it for one, and I would hardly consider myself a casual gamer. People just have different ideas about what's important in a game.
Personally, I'm glad that Nintendo is finding more ways to increase the gaming marketplace. I had a conversation yesterday with someone who I never would have pegged as a gamer at all but there we were talking about Project Natal. It's interesting how much gaming culture has expanded. I welcome it. I think there are still challenging games out there, but honestly, I don't care quite as much as a lot of other people, I guess. I do see your point though. I just don't think it's a catastrophe.
