I am interested in taking an Introduction to Japanese class in my first semester at university, but don't know if it is very demanding or not. My cousin took some and said the first two years is very easy if you "jump right in", but after that the amount of kanji you must memorize made it too hard for her to continue any longer.

If it is too challenging, I might just take some more French courses to gain fluency, which might be more helpful since I'm a Canadian planning on majoring in Political Science.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I would go with Japanese, just because of the culture. I took Italian in college and it's only as hard as you make it out to be. If you slack off it will be hard. Pay attention and everything is just as easy as high school

I hope so, but I'll wait and see some other opinions before I settle on it.

Oh that's me alright!

Seriously, why is anybody that has an interest in learning Japanese always classified as a weeaboo? I've just always wanted to learn an Asian language for the longest time and know that Japanese is far easier to learn than Mandarin (the only other Asian language offered at my university).

And, for the record, while there is some manga that I do enjoy reading, I find cosplaying to be sad and dislike anime.

if you plan on taking a semester abroad though stick with Japanese. I feel visiting Japan would be 98740 times cooler than France any day of the week

Yeah, it would be.
I really wanted to go to Australia on a study abroad, but Japan would be more interesting by far. Though I've never left North America so anywhere would be nice!

I was thinking of doing this too once I transfer and start taking International Business classes, but I was nervous that it would be much more difficult than taking a language like Italian.

I'm taking Japanese 3 in high school right now. I really don't like it. You have to mesmerize around 4,000 kanji to be literate. Japan is a withering economy and if you're going to memorize 4,000 kanji, might as well learn chinese which will be much more useful.

Actually, since I made this topic a long time ago, I transferred into Business and started to take Mandarin classes :-d

It's not that challenging.... the trick is practicing using it as much as possible. If the class is mainly book work and no speaking, it will be difficult.
