Simply put, It's to see who can find the right answers fastest.

that's it...to put you under tons of seemingly unnecessary pressure. For one, if everybody is given all day, everyone should in theory score equally high. That ruins pretty much the purpose of tests since they are to find out who knows the material best and who doesn't. Those who know it best can recall it under the time constraints while others who might not, given enough time, will eventually find the solution.

When you get a job you will have dates to do things by. Pressure is a good thing.

good point...it's not even close to the time constraints of the real world. No matter what the profession, deadlines are vital to meet.

when taking the SATs...man, they kept saying crap like, this will decide your future and what college your going to..so i was all tense. I did horrible on the math part, but verbal i did good as usual. Its the math that kills me

If the tests weren't timed, it wouldn't be fair. Besides, SATs and stuff are standardized, so they have to have a control, which would be the time limit that's the same for everyone.

It teaches you how to budget your time and get your thoughts across clearly, concisely, etc.

you have to learn to deal with the pressure of getting something done on time. what are you going to do when you go out into the real world and have deadlines [like people up there said] to keep up with?

plus, i don't know about other states, but when i applied to a state school here, i didn't have the greatest GPA, but i did pretty well on the SATs. they have a sliding scale that help kids out. say if you do shitty on the SATs, but have an awesome GPA, they'd let you in anyway.

Time limits have never been a problem for me, you just have to relax.
