i would disagree. i guarantee that the things that non-praise, non-worship bands have done make God happy. (i.e. underoath in the metalcore scene, relient k in the pop punk scene, etc.)

Ha. It's also an arrogant presumption to label someone as not having studied a particular subject. I studied philosophy in my first year at Uni... It was interesting but I had to drop one subject at the end of the year and there were other subjects that I was more interested in.

Anyway, I didn't hear anything from the Lecturer that I didn't already know of and that I hadn't discussed from other people who studied it. That's not to say I still don't read a lot of material on it.. the reading list came in handier than I thought. I'm in no way a believer in Atheism by the way. I have my beliefs, I just don't see the need to broadcast. I merely saw an opportunity for a joke (a badly executed one obviously).

I'm a major in philosophy, and I agree with somethings in this and disagree with others. Of course there's "nothing inherently more logical about completely ruling out the possibility of a higher existence" simply because there's no great, overarching "logic" that everyone is destined to subscribe to, and therefore it's impossible to be more or less logical than anyone. Every philosopher had a different concept of what logic was. I mean, George Berkeley believed that the only things that existed were ideas and God. You can logically justify just about anything, including God. Where we disagree is that thinking "humans are the center of the universe" is "arrogant". Obviously if you can logically justify God, you can also logically justify your disbelief in God. There's nothing arrogant about thinking human beings are the end-all, be-all of reality. I mean, have you physically witnessed a being greater than mankind? Of course you believe in a higher being, but for the atheist, what else is he to worship? What greater intelligence and power than humans has he witnessed? If you disbelieve God, there are few more cogent things for the skeptic to appreciate, and there are a great many philosophers to back that up, such as the romanticists, the existentialists, Nietzsche, Ayn Rand, etc.

I don't quite understand what you're attempting to say here. If you're to believe Descartes' Second Meditation in his Meditations on the First Philosophy, then there is nothing that can be proven beyond the existence of your thinking being. Saying you can't disprove God does not establish his existence. On the contrary, the impossibility of proving a negative means that, if you are to be fair, the onus for the existence of God lies in the believer for proof, rather than the atheist for disproof.

I personally find that agnosticism is very weak willed and spineless. Sure, being scientifically agnostic makes sense, in that you find the evidence to be inconclusive either way, but when you're talking about beliefs, it seems to always be a cover for a belief that might stir shit if people knew about it. I mean, you can choose to not know one way or the other, but I find it to be impossible to not believe one way or the other.

Your sentiment about "believing what you want to believe" is right, but a great deal of this is wrong. Personal experiences are hardly subjective, in that if I were to say, "hey, look at that car," you would understand (unconsciously, of course) the shared reality of objects, space, language, sound, air pressure, light, etc. We can interpret from the fact that the same cues are being received by the both of us that it is more likely that we are in touch with the objective reality and not "shitting ourselves". The interpretation of these cues is where subjectivity mainly arises. Philosophically, there still remains complete ambiguity on who is "right" or not in terms of their interpretations of reality, but the justifications and beliefs are not all equal, and this is mainly when you step out of the "veil of doubt" personally and present your justifications socially. That is why you laugh at crazy people and respect wise people, because you recognize the social illogic and logic of the two respective thoughts. So saying that he should necessarily back off of you because you might be right doesn't mean that he can't find illogic in what you find comfortable, or even that he should feel the need to respect that.
