Well, you're in the complete minority here, I guess. I didn't really like Russell that much, but I also felt that was the point, that for once the kid was actually a dumb kid and the elders were the ones that knew better. I really liked Carl and I thought Dug was hilarious. As for dogs killing people, you do know you can train attack dogs in real life, right? Sure, they don't have collars that vocalize their brain patterns, but whatever, who cares? Their master was a paranoid nutbar. I don't think it's any less Pixar than talking cars or talking action figures.

I don't think its anywhere near the opus people view it as, or think that Rand's 'social commentary' or whatever you want to call it is very intelligent or provocative (objectivism is pretty fucking stupid), but for some reason I enjoyed it, even though I mostly finished reading it just to say I did.

Although, actually I'm surprised it 'offended you as an artist' because, I always thought it was the 'go-to reference point' for defending one's individuality as an artist. And jesus, that sounds pompous haha.

I wrote a really long response to this and accidentally deleted it all. Damn.

But basically, I think Randian aesthetics--of art being a means to say what things might and ought to be--are shallow and narrow. Art can be used for so much more than just that. And I also think she bastardizes Romanticism in order to say that it's better than Modernism by appropriating the values in it and ignoring the subjectivism with which she disagreed.

Well put, and that sucks about the long post because I would have loved to read it. I love discussions about this type of shit and I basically agree with what you said about her outlooks being very narrow and how art is capable of so much more. Yet with all that said, I did enjoy reading that book for some reason.

Who do you truly hate?

I'm watching Order of the Phoenix right now and my blood boils for anything Dolores Umbridge related. If this has been made before, just let me know.

I agree but my hate might be fueled in that I dislike her as a character. No redeeming features made her parts of the book tough and took away from the book imo which was disappointing.

Draco Malfoy
Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars (not Vader, just Anakin.)

Do you truly despise these two characters? Malfoy is the stereotypical bully and that is certainly a reason I dislike him but hate? He is almost as much a victim of birth as Harry, just his opposite. Born to two death eaters, growing up privileged in an arrogant pure blood family, being told that Harry is somebody to dislike and naturally fear, being surronded by the wrong people from a young age in all parts of his life. Plus, when Voldemort returns he has no choice but to join him, or align himself with him. A 14/15 year old whose parents have chosen Voldemort's ways he would be disowned and killed most likely if he chose differently. His breakdown in 6 and 7 and his inability to kill Dumbledore redeem him in my eyes.

As for Anakin, again, certainly reasons for dislike but hate is too strong. Growing up very very powerful, away from his family, seeing his mother dying has to have tainted him and made him want to protect those he loves, like Padme. As a result, he goes to desperate and foolish measures to do so as well as getting caught up in his arrogance and becomes power hungry. All the while he is being manipulated by the Emperor. I don't despise him he was just very foolish.

Umbridge is one that instantly comes to mind. I fucking hated her in the book and movie.

I agree but my hate might be fueled in that I dislike her as a character. No redeeming features made her parts of the book tough and took away from the book imo which was disappointing.

Malfoy was just so easy to hate. He was redeemed and it was good, but for the longest time I couldn't stand him. I think the antagonism he presented to Harry was great.

Anakin, no excuse. He was a caniving little cunt from day one.

I never hated Malfoy because I knew that he wasn't truly evil, he was just too much of a wiener to go against his father/form his own opinions.

Gertrude missed her husband, she is innocent.

I disagree. It is, of course, open to interpretation. But I don't consider her innocent, and I do not think missing her husband is a good case for her innocence, especially considering the speed with which she remarried.

That is pretty relatable to now. How girls (and guys too) 'rebound' to someone simply to avoid being alone, something they haven't been for a while, and don't want to lose companionship. She didn't want to believe any wrong could come out Claudius, understandably, because she'd be alone again. And then he killed her, accidentally, of course, but she knew at the end she was mistaken to place faith in him.

The beauty of Shakespeare is just how little authorial intent is actually present. At this point, it's virtually an open text. I like your interpretation, though am inclined to have a somewhat different one.

Seriously. I don't think that's Hayden's fault though, I think that's cause Lucas is a shitty writer. You know what the best Star Wars film is? Empire. You know which Star Wars film Lucas didn't write? Empire. Seriously, let the man near a camera but keep him the fuck away from a pencil. As it is, I hated Anakin so much I'm glad he's dead. I completely agree as long as we are only talking about the movies. Part of the problem is that I hate Kirsten Dunst, but they also made Mary Jane extremely selfish/self-involved and unlikable in the movies. In the comics she could be strong and independent, but not a selfish bitch.

Seriously, this character is... unbelivable. It's like she's not even the work of Mark Schwahn, but rather Dante's Eleventh Level of Hell. Dante just didn't write about because he thought Peyton would be too awful and horrifying for people to comprehend.

And lo and behold, an annoying, pseudo-artistic crybaby, sporting concert tees and ripped skinny jeans, will whine about people always leaving her, and proceed to steal other girls' boyfriends/fiances from them, and God knows how many other horrors. And she will be known forever as The Eleventh Level of Hell. Dante then pissed himself and cried in fear.
