I laughed to myself when I saw this poll. I thought to myself, "Who the hell would pick Dave over Kurt? That's just silly!"
Holy fucking shit, dudes. If it wasn't for Nevermind, you wouldn't have your Green Days or your Blink-182's. You would especially not have a record like "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" on a store shelf.
Grohl writes catchy rock tunes. Nothing more, nothing less.

the argument for dave grohl is that he is the coolest dude in the industry (which he is), makes more enjoyable/ better music (in some peoples opinion), is an excellent drummer, and that nirvana did not manage to catch fire until dave came aboard.
i doubt anyone would say he is more creative or influential than kurt. i personally like dave more, but i would never say that. it's just that, all things considered, i like dave more. if i had to have lunch with one though, i'd probably pick kurt. just to see what he's like.

So I'm guessing that the poll should be asking "Who's a cooler dude".
I think Dave might be the most down to earth frontman living right now. That being said, I think Kurt is the most influential rock musician in history. I would have to pick the latter when it comes to importance in rock music, but the former in a poll that asked "Who is a radder dude".
Nom sayin'?
Also, it wasn't Dave that made Nirvana break, even though the drums on Nevermind are jaw-dropping. Bleach has some of the best pop hooks since the Beatles.
"I.. Need a, easy friend, I do.." Pure pop goodness. Perfect.

Oh hell no but many other big artist's of the 90's and 80's such as smashing pumpkins, radiohead, nine inch nails, jeff buckly there are so many better bands then nirvana, yet they get creditied for shapeing rock music today. But Nirvana came along and killed rock and roll making everything sad and depressing thank god for dave after nirvana starting foo fighters and at least keeping good rock still alive and a survining chance.

right, i personally prefer radiohead to nirvana, as well as some NIN. and i really respect smashing pumpkins and jeff buckly. but when nirvana broke, nothing sounded like them at the time. it's not like nirvana came out making similar to other big name bands in order to gain success. they were the first successful (in a mainstream sense of the word) group of their kind, and without them i would say that radiohead, NIN, smashing pumpkins, green day, the offspring, and the majority of alternative bands enjoying similar success the past two decades would never have gained that kind of exposure. before nirvana, the bands topping the charts were ratt, poison, def leppard, and guns n roses. personally, i prefer the music that followed it.
now, if you don't like nirvana's music, i can respect that, because i don't love everything they've made. but i think they do deserve respect.
after all of that, i still prefer dave grohl. foo's tie radiohead for my favorite band.

Good Response. However i will disagree with you that Nirvana was the first of that so called sound i.e. grunge. Failure was the ultimate grunge band filled with complex time signatures well written material. You should definitely check them out regardless. However Nirvana instead of them was the group that got big and put grunge on the map. No one even cared about grunge at that time. So i will give the credit for bringing that mainstream, however was it be any mean's good music, Not really in my opinion but there will be a billion people that argue with me on that one. However I do think that bands such a radiohead and nine inch nails had more of an influence on a era then Nirvana did. Mainstream is not really a good thing all the time and Nirvana only really blew up after Kurt Cobain's death. I will say he wrote some good songs but also alot and i mean alot of garbage material in there as well. Now as you mentioned the offspring well they actually wrote their own success and to this day have a world record for best selling album that they produced and distributed themselves on their own lable if im not mistaken i think it was their debut album but i could be wrong. I don't think Nirvana had that much influence on some of these bands.

Winner: Dave Grohl. Kurt was hurt inside but his music was as boring as dirt if you werent too. He came around at the perfect time, and started a lot of things. In my opinion though that doesn't mean he is a better musician. Why would you want to put on a Nirvana CD when there are the Foo Fighters? Plus Dave was able to show more versatility.
Honorable mention: Kurt Cobain. He definately meant everything he said in his music. And Dave Grohl owes his career to him.

i've listened to some Failure, but not extensively. any recommended material?
i agree with the bolded, and i wasn't saying it is always good. a lot of it is pure shit (i.e. hinder). some bands (chili peppers, nirvana, radiohead, foo fighters, nine inch nails, the list goes on) deserve to be popular, but i agree it does not always mean good.
i think there are some specific offspring songs that are pretty similar in style to nirvana, particularly dexters vocal style. obviously the majority of their influence probably comes from 80's punk acts if i had to guess.

I would recommend the album "Fantastic Planet" By Failure
Good point's, however i don't really think Dexter would have been Inspired from Kurt Cobain in that sense at least. As both Nirvana and Offspring broke out on the scene at the same time. Their first cd's were both released on June 15th 1989. They way i look at it was that Nirvana would not have blown up at all if not for the death of Kurt Cobain. In terms of his singing he was to be one of the worst i have ever heard. However that's just my opinion millions of people will disagree with me, decent song writer tho im just a big Dave Grohl fan.

Dave Grohl, only because he is rock's mr nice guy and has succesfully proven himself for more than a decade.
Obviously Kurt didn't have this opportunity, but i don't see if Cobain was alive that he could have stayed relevant as Grohl has.

I wish Kurt would've been around longer so I could really be able to judge. I had to go with Grohl though because throughout the span of his career, he has always had at least a couple songs that I loved. If Kurt was still around making music, then I think I'd be able to judge better. He just didn't have time to really let his music grow.

Nor do I understand why I hate him so much. I remember an interview with him he said he almost quit making music and that made me happy.
I think I just really dislike the Foo Fighters

Kurt is a legend, and deserves to be, but Nirvana didnt get big until Dave was drumming. After Dave joined, Nirvana began sounding like the Nirvana everyone remembers. Grohl never gets the respect he deserves with the Foo Fighters, but hes bringing back real Rock and Roll one album at a time.
Dave's great, but definitely Kurt.
