I was telling a friend of mine he should listen to these bands and he asked the dreaded "What kind of genre do they fall under"? uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

i wouldn't really throw taking back sunday into the same genre as the other two. brand new and manchester orchestra have a bit of an indie vibe, while tbs is more heavy pop punk, more comparable to brand new's earlier stuff.

Yeah, I agree with rock, even though, at times in the past, Manchester reminds me more of indie. Brand New and TBS are definitely rock. Why are you suggesting TBS to a friend? That's just mean.

haha he was already a fan of taking back sunday so i brought up BN and MO so he can hear what better music sounds like. TBS was just a part of the conversation.
p.s. love the avatar. Saw Good Old War with Straylight Run a few weeks ago and i am really digging their album.

How about, who cares? This is a dumb poll. Tell your friend he shouldn't write off a band just because they fall into a certain genre.

The name of a genre is meaningless, it's just a label and doesn't really accurately describe a band's music.

Why toss all 3 into the same genre?

I'd just stick to the broad genre of rock - that seems to cover everything.

melodic punk/hardcore? I don't really care about genres tbh.

Alternative rock would cover them all, I guess. Pop/rock for TBS. Indie rock for MO.

yeah, the thing is i've always used genres as a way to organize music for myself, so that if i wanted to make a mix with a certain sound or feel i could go to certain genres, so it seems silly to me for him/you to ask other people what their opinion is on the genre. that being said i have MO as indie rock, BN as alternative and TBS as pop rock

early brand new and taking back sunday are an emo pop punk type thing. lol.
manchester and new brand new are indie emo.
just my way of saying it, doesnt really matter...everyone has different names for the genres, just be really broad and tell the kid they are rock bands. haha.

It's not that bad. It grew on me to the point that almost half the songs are listenable.

emo shouldn't be allowed to be used anymore. the meaning of it has totally been lost and it is just a useless word now.

Well figuring I don't consider these three bands in the same genre, and none of Brand New's albums I'd consider in the same genre, I find it kind of pointless to try.
Are you kidding me?? Emo.

I voted alternative, although I don't think TBS is in the same genre as Brand New or Manchester.
