Hi everyone, I just have some questions for you, I'm doing a little work on sport in english lesson, and I just want to ask a few questions to you.

1 ) Class these sports in popularity order, and associate them to 2/3 representative teams.

Football, Hockey, Basketball, Baseball.

2 ) Do you support more than one team.

3 ) Do you support it for geographical reasons, or other reasons.

4 ) Do you buy stuff from this team (Jersey, scarf, shirts, toys ...)

5 ) Do you think sport got a cultural power ?

Thanks everyone.

I'll bump this, and maybe had some new questions.

Nobody's associating the sports to any teams like he asked so I'll do it...actually nobody is even answering the questions correctly...

1. Football (Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys)
2. Baseball (New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox)
3. Basketball (Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers)
4. Hockey (Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers)

2. I always have one team that I will root for no matter who they're against, but there's a few other teams I'm casual fans of.

3. My favorite teams are all from where I grew up in, but there are a few times I like because I really like one player on their team, or they're fun to watch (Basketball - Phoenix Suns)

4. No, I don't buy sports memorabilia besides my college basketball team from the school I go to.

5. Sports definitely have a cultural power in America. Football brings with it a tough guy mentality, it's associated with Sunday afternoons on the couch with beer and nachos. Baseball is a summer time event, a family event, and college basketball can change the way an entire campus acts.

is nobody else actually reading this questionarre? Put the sports in order of popularity...not the ones you like best. basketball isn't even close to being the most popular sport in america.

Thanks a lot.

I was really thinking that hockey is more popular than that. But it's cool to correct this.

Can I just have your opinions on that cliché :

"There's too much money in sport", "they don't deserve to get so much".

What's your point of wiev on players wages, and all the money around the teams (tickets getting high prices, collector stuff ...).

Thanks everyone.

I'll read a financial article about NBA, the money in it is so fucking huge :O I never think it get so big.

2. Some sports, only because I grew up on some teams, and have come to love others as I have lived in two areas for long periods of time.

3. Mostly geographical.

4. Yes, shirts, hats.

5. Yes.

I personally don't mind the money in sports. I wish ticket prices were lower, but it's entertainment. Concerts, plays and movies are expensive too.

I've never minded players wages. They're public figures/entertainers and deserve to be paid as such. Imagine if players made normal wages? Would we look up to them? If you have the exceptional talent to be a professional athlete, you should be paid as such.

1. Football is easily the most popular sport in America. Currently, the teams that would be most representitive to a casual fan would be the New England Patriots, The Pittsburgh Steelers, The Dallas Cowboys, the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers.

Baseball would come 2nd. The New York Yankees, The Boston Red Sox, The Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves are probably the most well known. perhaps the New York Mets as well.

3rd is the NBA, where all time it would be the Boston Celtics and the LA Lakers, but lately it is probably San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat.

Hockey is last (even further below this if we count NASCAR as a sport). the teams most Americans could identify would be the New York Rangers, The Montreal Canadiens, The Detroit Red Wings, The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins.

2. Support is a pretty broad term to use here. Do I root for more than one team per sport? In some cases (baseball and football), yes.

3. In most cases it has been geographical I suppose. The teams you grow up with are generally the teams you grow most attached to. However in 2 cases, geography is not the deciding factor.

4. Yes, hats and jerseys would be the most common purchase for fans in America.

5. Sports in America are probably the dominating cultural power. Maybe 2nd only to the hip hop and urban culture in this country.

Yep, thats my theory. If their wages were "too high", we'd stop going to see sports, ticket prices would be too high. Plus, most athletes only have so long to work, and especially in football or hockey, when they retire, it's because they can't physically move anymore. I mean, seeing running backs on a Monday hobble around tells you why they get paid so much.

see, i dont feel that way at all. maybe WE would stop going, but would the general public stop going? i fuckin doubt it.

I had the same thought a little while back, but it might have been one of the ESPN radio talk show guys that made a good point. People want tickets badly, it's a supply and demand kind of thing. By a group protesting ticket prices in say the New England area, there are probably 10 more groups dying to get their tickets.

I haven't noticed a lot of increases in ticket prices in the last few years, even though salaries continue to skyrocket (though baseball they might with the lack of a true cap).

you arent paying attention then. ticket prices skyrocketing are a primary reason that the NHL was so fucked financially before the lockout. not to mention how ridiculously priced football is in this country... and certainly in boston tickets are fuckin out of control.

im going to the devils/bruins game tonight sitting in the nosebleeds at the fleetcenter... 25 bucks..

oof.

definitely a possibility, could also be that my area (Central/ Western PA) isn't exactly a hotspot for sports, so price don't flux too much. I also go to a lot fewer live games thatn I used to (last thing I went to was a baseball game I think, and then the original AHL all star game before that a while back when it was held in Hershey)

i mean, i barely go to games(surprise surprise its too fucking expensive) but anytime theres a ticket price increase (and there is every single year) the globe or herald or both has an article about it.

i cant remember the last time i paid for a professional sporting event.

free hawks tickets, free rams tickets(EW), free cardinals tix(always 12 rows behind homeplate). i remember when we got our asses stomped by the sox in the world series, i had four tix that my mom have been given from her work to game four, i didnt want to go to that shit and watch them celebrate, so why not give a good sox fan a good deal on some tix. 2400 bucks for 12 rows back to some sucka...as soon as he paid me, he was like 'you couldve gotten twice that on ebay, crazy kid' then i proceeded to tell him that the tickets i had sold him were free to me...and that he basically put two grand in my pocket, i thanked him and walked away...

random story, but yeah, free tickets and i scalp them the majority of the time if its baseball. id be lucky to get half of face for hawks tickets.

It sucks when tickets are expensive, but personally I would rather buy expensive tickets to see a game in a decent stadium than pay little to see a game in a shit hole. i love the minnesota twins but the HHH metrodome is arguably the worst stadium in the MLB. A shitty football stadium makes for a fucking terrible baseball stadium.

A lot of college players are looked up to and they dont make any money. if the average salary was say 200,000 a year people still would look up to them
