Ick, I hated it. The horribly trite dialogue in the Asgard scenes... that's what I was most excited for, seeing Kenneth Branagh tackle Asgard! It was so bad. So corny. Kat Denning's terrible comic relief... Chris Hemsworth's... just Chris Hemsworth. I'm a huge Branagh fan and a huge Thor fan. I was anticipating this film so much. Those five leaked minutes really crushed my excitement.

"Oh no, this is Earth, isn't it?"

What a horrible line. Almost everything about this trailer is bad. Clark Gregg's even bad. I liked how Asgard looked, but the stilted dialogue between Odin and Thor was... ugh. This is going to end up being one of the worst Marvel efforts. And there's been some bad ones. It's a shame, because the director behind it is so massively talented. I thought him a perfect fit.

Interesting to see how Paramount/Marvel are previewing this, letting the fanboy-esque bloggers (and Peter Sciretta) preview it. I am interested to see more cultured film journalists review it. I see it as a genuine indicator of it being good at the very lease. A lot of those guys are starting to speak well of the movie now. Collider just put up their positive review of it too. My expectation of it was always 'it looked ok' and could be good. Very relived to see it is fun to watch though. I think Thor is probably the most difficult movie for Marvel to sell and if they succeed, I can see everything else coming together nicely. Pretty incredible they are actually getting all of it done and doing it well.

It makes me a little more hopeful. I've always continually wished success on Marvel, not just financially but in terms of them making quality films. I'm not expecting it to be anything as good as X-Men: First Class, but fun is all I could hope for out of this one.

I saw this on Monday when the advanced previews were going on. I don't normally pay for movies as I work at a cinema but we weren't showing it. I did like the movie but some parts could have been a bit better, like the fight scene in the town. Can't wait for Captain America and Green Lantern!!

That's a bummer. The theater I go to has a paid parking garage, but if you show them a movie stub from that day you get free parking.

Disagreed. The Earth stuff was cool, but the stuff in Thor's galaxy was downright silly from the CGI to the villain looking like frickin Ivan Ooze from "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers." Just about every character outside of Thor was an archetype created to say usually cliched lines.

It wasn't like bad, but it wasn't anything great either. "Iron Man" is still streets ahead of this.

Not arguing, just going to counter some of your points, since we're the only two to comment so far, haha. I can understand your gripes except for the CGI being silly. It was some of the best I have ever seen -- everything looked amazing. And as far as Laufey looking like he does ... I mean, that's what he looks like. That's how Stan Lee first drew him, how he looked in Norse mythology. And more or less every comic book movie so far has a supporting cast full of characters built to move the story along through hackneyed dialogue. Kinda par for the course, no?

Gaugzilla

I hear ya. But like when comparing this to, say, Iron Man, that was great not only because of RDJ (And Chris Hemsworth is actually up to par with his performance), but because Gwyneth Paltrow's character was more than just the boilerplate female interest. You could replace Natalie Portman with any other Hollywood actress in this and get the same results because the character has basically nothing to do. And a movie like this needs a slew of good characters because it's going to lose a bunch of people trying to explain its mythology.

That said, it's a fun film. It won't go down as a bad one and it won't be remembered as a great one. It'll land in like Iron Man 2 or Hellboy territory.

I saw a preview screening of this last night...I thought it was pretty awesome given the campy subject matter. All the actors were great, the story was decent and entertaining. The only plot hole that bothered me is how Thor befriends, falls in love, and becomes more human after 2 days of being in that town.

The movie is essentially Masters of the Universe, Legend and Beastmaster 2: Portal Through Time rolled up into one decent action movie.

I thought that they did a fantastic job with the many characters, the acting was great, the CG was great, the story was even well above my expectations.

I mean it's not just the story it's based off of, it's the 75% of the movie. Only a small portion of it really took place on Earth. It's far more interested in the mythology than Thor with the humans.

so i'm guessing you're not a fan of Thor? Most fans biggest worry was that the story would not have Asgard much if at all. That IS the story. there's no way to tell that story in midgard (earth) for any longer period of time. Thor spends most of his time in Asgard, and periodically comes down to earth, so that is the story. The mythology is a main theme of Thor, so i'd hope they hit on that to stay true to the story instead of appeasing people who want to see Thor make out with Natalie Portman.

The trailers made me think it was going to be terrible, I think that was the first response from people when they saw them. When the early reviews started coming out that was the first thing addressed, because the trailers really do nothing for the movie. I'm not sure how the script read, but I thought it played out pretty well, better than i could have hoped honestly. Of course i'm not one of those people who is going to pick apart everything and i'm slightly a fan boy, but if you get the chance i'd say see it in theaters.

I'm personally not very excited for Pirates 4, but I don't know if this changes anyone's feelings. Eh.

Jack Sparrow doesn’t usually feel regret, though he does at times feel lost. Fans of the devil-may-care seafarer may know what it’s like to be there with him.

In this week’s cover story, EW looks at how the fourth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean mega-franchise, On Stranger Tides (out May 20), attempts to reverse course from the previous two installments and return to the stand-alone spirit of the original. “I felt if we were going to do a 4, that more than anything we owed the audience a fresh start, without all the complicated mathematics of 1 colliding with 2 and 2 colliding with 3,” Depp says. “I felt like it was important to eliminate as many complications as possible.”

“They had to invent a trilogy out of nowhere,” he says of the previous films. “It was plot driven and complicated. I remember talking to [Gore Verbinski, director of the first three films] at certain points during production of 2 or 3, and saying: ‘I don’t really know what this means.’ He said, ‘Neither do I, but let’s just shoot it.’ This guy is this guy’s dad, and this guy was in love with this broad. It was like, ‘What?’”

As for Depp’s feelings about parts 2 and 3? “To be perfectly honest, I didn’t see them,” says the star. “I did see the first one. I have not seen the second one or the third one.”

Saw this tonight. Pretty good and a lot of fun to watch but pretty weak in some spots. The Asguardian stuff is wonderful spectacle to watch and Chris Hemsworth owns the role as much as RDJ does with Iron Man. Tom Hiddleston however really impressed me with his performance. It's been a while since I've sympathize with the lead Villain, and he's gonna make Avengers that much more enjoyable. Some of the stuff with SHIELD in the middle and Jane/Thor toward the end doesn't work and the film in general has a choppy pacing. But this was fun, and they got a nice foundation to build on. Almost as good as the first Iron Man.

Really curious however how they are going to bring up the fact Thor can't return to Earth in the Avengers

Sequel, summer 2013 (right along with Iron Man 3). Marvel's really cranking em out now.

I was going to post an image, but for some reason I can't copy and paste pictures anymore so I'm at a loss. But I'll just go ahead and say what I was going to illustrate: cash cow

Pretty much. It reminded me of this interview (http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/08/06/mined-to-death-xmen-director-says-hollywood-is-killing-the-superhero-movie/) with Matthew Vaughn. I have no idea if he's necessarily right (these things are, after all, cash cows), but it's an interesting thought.

I'm more excited for Iron Man 3 but I'm very interested to see where they go with this.

Me too. They have to have someone in the Avengers make a cameo in that one for sure.
