Once Bruno comes out I'm 100% sure that will be my number one. Their is no possible way this will disappoint
I'm looking forward to Bruno as well, but I don't know if anything will beat Up for me this year.
Glad to see you also enjoyed Adventureland so much. I don't know a lot of people who have seen it, but I absolutely loved it.

Its sad that Adventureland didn't reach enough people. It made less than $15 million theatrically but I can totally see it becoming a cult hit on DVD.
I sure hope so. Greg Mottola just reached another level with this movie. Sadly it was marketed as another teen comedy like Superbad, but it's so much more.

I've been underwhelmed so far, but that's usually the case at this point in the year. Also, I haven't even seen half the number of movies I saw at this point in 2008.
With that said, I don't have a top five.

Moon or Away We Go? I think both technically started last weekend and I was stoked because we usually get indie movies pretty early out here, but on those two we didn't. Needless to say I started sporting wood as soon as I found this weekend that they're both at the same theater 10 minutes from my house.

I just saw this last week and was actually kind of disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, but seemed to be lacking something that really would get me interested in the story. Tremendous animation though, no doubt about that.

Yeah, I've read all of it. Goodbye, Chunky Rice is fantastic, but not as great as Blankets, and Carnet de Voyage is a very solid read that gets you very interested in traveling and really lets Thompson stretch in terms of visual presentation, but it reads a bit long.
Ever explore any other similar works? The graphic novel/comic medium has some great works akin to Blankets.

I've been looking all over for Goodbye, but it appears I'll need to order it. Blankets was my first and only taste of the medium to any degree at all. I had always assumed the content was very comic book and action based with very little if any character/coming of age portrayals and things of that nature. If there are other works similar to Blankets, I'd love to know of any and all you can provide. I'll look into them all.
Thanks for the tip. Hopefully Thompson's new work gets published before the year's end.

Brian Wood's Local is a great, great read. I strongly recommend that in terms of character/coming of portrayals.
Art Spiegelman's Maus is obviously the perceived pinnacle of more serious minded graphic novels, as it won the Pulitzer Prize. It's a fantastic read, but it's all about the experience of being a Polish Jew in the Holocast - not exactly coming of age, but an awesome read.
Y the Last Man is a coming of age tale told via the sci fi angle of "what do you do when you're the last man living on Earth?" It's 10 trade paperbacks long, but it's one of my two or three favorite reads ever. It's written by Brian K. Vaughan, who is one of the primary writers of Lost (he was hired after he had written most of Y).
There are a lot of other options out there if you read any of those and like them. The world of comics is a lot more expansive than people give it credit for.

See, I'm not so big on anything Sci-Fi or having to do with or pertaining to historical struggles/travesties. I'll check the first one you suggested out first, but in terms of stuff I'd really enjoy - it would more or less be a direct rip off or very similar story to that of Blankets. I tend to find a certain type of book or formula I like in a particular work, and then find and read anything and everything that fits a similar mode. It's like entertainment OCD. Any more help is of course appreciated.
Edit: I'm liking what Wood's Local and Demo sound like a lot. So I'll definitely start with those two and Goodbye...if there's anything else along the lines of these stories, I'd love to check them out as well.

I completely understand. I'll think of some other recommendations. Many love Allison Bechdel's Fun Home, which sounds more of your cup of tea, and I thought it was good, not great (it was one of Time's ten best books of 2007 I believe). Seth's It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken is another well liked book, which is very personal but one I think tends to get overrated a bit.
Local though, I totally back. Never read Demo, but I trust Brian Wood. He's a great writer.

I hate to sound entirely chavonistic and potentially homophobic, but I generally prefer male protagonists, so Fun Home doesn't seem like it would fit the bill. I'm sure I would appreciate Seth's message in It's a good life..so small compared to Blankets, so I'll add it to the list. If you think of any others please feel free to PM me

While watching the movie, I had a feeling it could and even when I originally posted I had a feeling, so I just went ahead and put it at the top of my list. Will it be the best movie of the year? Probably not, but I identified with so many different parts of it and with some of the characters so much that I know it will remain at the top if not close for most the year. Normally I can articulate better about movies, but this one just flat out left me speechless.
As for Moon, it was fucking brilliant. Went in a totally different direction than I expected and it was even better than I could have hoped for. Go check it out if at all possible. And it easily reinforced Sam Rockwell as one of my favorite actors.

And it easily reinforced Sam Rockwell as one of my favorite actors.
man I love hearing all of this, I will see Moon the day it comes here

This...I mean Jason Statham is in it. The only thing that I enjoyed with him in it was The Italian Job, and that was because Norton and Co bailed him out.

The remake of the Italian Job was horrible; haven't seen the original. I remember hearing when it came out that supposedly Ed Norton didn't even want to be in it, but was forced to because of contractual obligations or something.
Statham is like the British version of Vin Deisel--total meathead. The only things he's been decent in are Lock, Stock, Snatch, and Collateral, none of which I even like that much.

There's a lot of my friends who haven't seen it as well. It is, in my opinion, one of the greatest animated films of all time. I love the end when he's flying up and hears Hogarth's voice in his mind saying, "You are who you choose to be" and he says, "Superman." As cheesy as it sounds, that part can give me some serious chills.

I need to make all my friends sit down and actually watch it so they can understand that. I think Disney may have made another good 2D film with The Princess and the Frog. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I think Disney realizes their 2D films have taken a dive, and I also believe they have worked really hard on this film to make it up to par with their previous classics. I don't think Pixar would back it if they didn't believe in it. 2D is still relevant.

That is not fair at all, haha. That film is by far my most anticipated for the rest of the year.
I went to Warner Brothers in LA for a week because I'm interning there next summer, I rode my skateboard around the studio and a coworker asked if I liked Spike's work, I knew Spike has a HUGE background in skateboarding and I'm completely indulged in the culture, plus I was a huge huge huge, fan of everything he's done in skateboarding and film. So I said, of course I was a huge fan in his work.
(If you haven't seen any of his skateboarding work, check out Lakai's Fully Flared and all of Girl, Chocolate, and Lakai videos)
Long story short, I got hooked up with a test screening that week because I was riding a skateboard.

Wow, bold statement. I downloaded The Hurt Locker months ago but I still haven't gotten around to watching yet, and I'd say Inglourious Basterds would definitely have been on last year's top ten list. But as 2007 was far and away better than 2008 for movies, there's simply been a low quantity of quality movies released so far this year.

I just feel like more movies delivered last year, whereas movies this year have fallen short of some expectations. Sure there have been great surprises (Star Trek, The Hangover, and some would say District 9) and probably a few higher quality films at the top than at the top of last year's lists at this time, but I feel I've been disappointed a lot more this year than last. Nevertheless, I think there are some great films coming out this fall and I will likely agree with both you and narcoleptic come October/November that 09 > 08.
Edit: Although I've yet to see a lot of the other movies I would likely enjoy, such as The Hurt Locker, Moon, and The Brothers Bloom, so I'm sure that has a bit to do with it.

I wouldn't call it such a bold statement. Last year's Best Picture category was one of the weakest crops of films I've seen nominated, and even the films people often called the "real" best of the year (The Dark Knight, Wall-E, The Wrestler) weren't even half as good as either of the films I mentioned. As far as summer seasons go, this one wasn't too bad. A few truly great films alongside your usual disposable popcorn flicks. In fact, I can't recall many Summers that yielded a better film than Inglourious Basterds.

And definitely watch The Hurt Locker. It took my awhile to get around to it when I downloaded it, but holy shit am I glad I finally watched it. The Fall
Son of Rambow
Cloverfield
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
In Bruges
Iron Man
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Speed Racer
The Bank Job
Wanted
Pineapple Express
Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day

Snow Angels

Movies that had no award implications yet simply delivered exactly what it needed to. These are movies that (for the most part) weren't placed in a lot of top ten lists but were still very worthwhile and enjoyable movies, which is kinda my whole point: there have been some great movies this year, but the majority of the sum has produced less than rewarding theater-going experiences.

A few of my favorites from last year (Iron Man, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, In Bruges) would probably have been among my favorites from last year, but I stand by my statement that both The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds would top any of the films on that list. I think we could make a very comparable list of films from this year (though I haven't seen everything that could probably be on that list). I just think this year has been just as strong.
Also, Zack and Miri came out at the end of October. Fun movie though.
Thought Wanted was awful.
