A Textbook Tragedy - Rain City State of Mind
Record Label: Distort
Release Date: June 23, 2009
Who?
A Textbook Tragedy, that's who. The five piece experimental/hardcore/mathcore band hails from Vancouver, British Columbia, and are pushing the boundaries in music since their debut album A Partial Dialogue Between Ghost and Priest', and 2008's Intimidator. Fusing the raw aggression of straight up hardcore punk bands, and the technicality of all of the bands that confuse your girlfriend, listening to them may make you want to kill, fight and steal. With dual screams from Chris Bahris (Vocals) and Kai Turmann (Guitar, Vocals), melodic vocals from Bill Crook (Bass, Vocals), riffs from both Turmann and Adam Christiannson (Guitar), all held together by the monumental beats of the talented (understatement!) Nick Yacyshyn (Drums), ladies and gentlemen, in answer to your question of 'Who?'; A Textbook Tragedy are the next big thing.
How is it?
From the first bar of 'Destroyed in Seconds', it will instantly pull you in with it's infectious hardcore beats, amazingly constructed riffs and chaotic vocals (although far less chaotic compared to other tracks). My personal favourite, "White Lightning," is then fluidly transitioned from the previous track, keeping the energy going with an "If You Want Blood" (from 2008's 'Intimidator')-esque introduction by gang vocal. The lyrics on this song are some of my favourite of all time, as I can relate to them, as they are more along the lines of short stories rather than fictional events and metaphors that even Tom Hanks would have a problem solving, I feel like this band is a lot more genuine in sharing how they feel to the listener. Featuring amazing production and writing, this EP is raw and aggressive enough, while still maintaining a beautifully melodic edge. It is sure to stick as one of my favourites of the year. You have no choice but to check this out.
Architects; Johnny Truant; The love child of Dead Swans and The Dillinger Escape Plan
