Tomorrow will be a glorious day. We'll turn the radio on, fire up a new Myspace page, or pick our best friend's brain about their new favorite band. Ah yes, the promise of tomorrow. In 2009, tomorrow means constant chances to hear the next best of every genre. But stop! Maybe we're moving too fast. Maybe the next buzz band is taking tomorrow off. Maybe, well, maybe they suck. Stop wetting yourself with fear; it's unbecoming. AP.net's Staff is here to throw up the signal flares for 2009's best albums thus far. It's never too soon for nostalgia.

But we'd also love to hear who has put a smile on your face, and beyond that, what's going to be giving you morningwood for the rest of the year? Let's talk, discuss or fight. But most of all, let's love that which was the first half of 2009!

- Nostradamus

thanks to the staff for putting this together. thanks to nostradamus for coming back from the dead and writing the intro.

Every artist's name is clickable to either an AP.net band account or to a myspace page.

Now let's talk about your favorite records and your most anticipated!

Incredible first half of 2009 musically. Can't wait to see what the second half brings. 3eb, Brand New, Lostprophets, As Tall As Lions, Circa Survive (maybe?)...

And the best part about the first half is that almost all of my top 10 were surprises.

Thank you for putting this together Blake, and thanks for every staffer who contributed. I'll definitely be picking up some albums based on these lists.

Looks great, Blake.

This year has been so good thus far, and it's only looking better.

Think it's gotta be Weatherbox I'm most excited about for the second half of '09. Maybe The Graduate too, depending...

Jeremy Aaron

Like Steve's, my top 10 is full of surprises, but it seems that's how it is every year. Last year bands like The Republic Tigers, The Helio Sequence, These New Puritans, Neva Dinova and others came from out of nowhere to rule my playlists and it's no different this year.

In the second half of '09, I'm looking forward to hearing new music from As Tall as Lions, Band of Horses, Brand New, Circa Survive, Editors, Eye Alaska, Fang Island, House of Fools, Midlake, Minus the Bear, Muse, Mute Math, Nightmare of You, OK Go, Rival Schools, Saosin, Say Anything, Steel Train, Weatherbox, and more. However, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if my favorite record of the next six months will be from a band not listed there -- perhaps one I haven't even heard of yet.

Looks like The Dangerous Summer is a big winner, and rightfully so, I can't stop listening to that record. My favorites so far Dangerous Summer, Ace Enders, Grizzly Bear, Therefore I Am, Manchester Orchestra, Mansions, Catherine, and Kevin Devine.

Anticipating Brand New, Mute Math (favorite music video of '09) Say Anything, 3eb, and Dead Man's Bones.

I'm not suprised to see TDS on top of Blake's list. Solid lists guys/girls, I'll need to check out some of those. But also, is it really fair to list albums that haven't been released yet though, lol.

Trophy Scars - Bad Luck
Gavin Castleton - Home
Kevin Devine - Brother's Blood
The Decemberists - Hazards Of Love
We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls
Jenny Owen Youngs - Transmitter Failure
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
Bishop Allen - Grrr...
The Number 12 Looks Like You - Worse Than Alone
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

I haven't listened to #12 in a while though, so I might be moving that out...and I didn't include the Tigers Jaw EP or Theophilus London's This Charming Mixtape because they're not really full albums.

Also, I only really listened to 3 of those artists before this year. So lots of surprises here as well.

Really good picks. I'm kinda surprised that nobody has listed Japandroids there, though. Have you listened to them? Not that it's better than anything in your list, but Post-Nothing is one of the most impressive records I've heard this year.

I'm actually doing a review of them right now.

In the second half of 09, I am really excited to hear the new Tegan and Sara, Moneen, Every Time I Die, Thrice, and Say Anything albums. I have already heard the new All Time Low and Set Your Goals as well and they are good. New Regina Spektor would have made my list if I had heard it before I made my list.

Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything to Nothing
The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love

I'm not sure what to compare them to, I've heard The Starting Line, which is the best I can think of. It's catchy pop-punk at it's finest. For me, it's a record I listen to from start to finish without skipping any tracks.

so i've made a top ten list for the last couple years and, honestly, usually i struggle to find ten albums that i really got into that came out that year. so i'm pretty pumped that it's only june and i already have ten amazing albums under my belt.

The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life and Death

I think I've seen Tate mention that this year has been pretty weak. And his initial thoughts on the fun. album didn't prepare me to see it at 4. What I'm wondering is if the album is that high because he thinks most the other albums released this year are weak or if even in a stronger year it would place high on his list? As a big Format fan, Dog Problems is a perfect album. How does Aim & Ignite compare?

I've really enjoyed 2009 so far. My favourite albums have been:

"Corporate Flesh Party" by My Passion
"Battle for the Sun" by Placebo
"Attics to Eden" by Madina Lake
"21st Century Breakdown" by Greenday
"The People or The Gun" by Anti-Flag
"The Best in Town" by The Blackout

I think the rest of the year is going to be awesome too. Lostprophets have an album due, and My Chem might have something out by the end of the year. Kill Hannah just turned their new album into their label a couple of days ago and I'm expecting AFI's new album will be out this year. All in all, 2009 is shaping up to be a good one :)

Top CD's
The Devil Wears Prada "roots above and branches below"
A Day To Remember "Homesick"
Silverstein "A Shipwreck In The Sand"
We Came As Romans "Dreams"
Mike Herrera "tumbledown"

I guess it's a top 5, I haven't gotten into a lot of the stuff that's come out this year.

Gee, with so much friggin' music being listened to, you'd figure the music industry would be doing much better...

~Still a fan of buying music, so I haven't listened to enough, I guess, and I can't imagine listening and paying to listen to all of the recommendations here (as I'm sure a lot of them are weak or just mediocre). With that said I am open to suggestions of albums that people really enjoy, and aren't just throwing on the top 10 lists for the sake of boosting their apparent knowledge in music.

I know that a lot of music is streamed for free on myspace and links through this website, which I really enjoy, but to actually own the music and plop it into itunes and on my ipod (should) be quite expensive.

Dredg: Pariah Parrot Delusion<-- exceptional album, I encourage you to listen to this
Mae: (m)orning EP<-- stellar start to a year long music project by Mae
Jimmy Eat World: Clarity Live, baby! If you liked Clarity, this is a high quality release
Cursive: Mama, I'm Swollen-pretty good stuff; I really like the last track
The Decemberists: Hazards of Love- I really recommend this album
Silverstein Pickups: Good stuff, sounds a bit like the band Mew
New Found Glory: Not Without a Fight-solid, a nice piece of their discography

with that said, I was not as impressed with Taking Back Sunday's album. In fact, I wasn't impressed at all and is one of the great disappointments of the past few years.

looking forward to Thrice, 3eb, Say Anything, Brand New, more Mae stuff, and Jimmy Eat World (09?)

This year, I'm not absolutely sure which I could call the best. In 2009, I can't really think of anything that blew my mind. Folie a Deux was that album that blew my mind, but that was '08. Nothing has come out yet to really make me scream in joy, but I'm really excited for All Time Low's Nothing Personal and Cobra Starship's Hot Mess. I know Panic at the Disco is working on some new stuff, that will be released later this year, so I'm excited for that, and I'm hoping that Blink is going to put out some new material. I was hoping that the Hush Sound would put something out but they're on hiatus. I'm still awaiting Greta Salpeter's solo project to I can hear her work. I'm excited for My Chemical's Romance's new album because Desolation Row was great, and I'm also anticipating Muse's new album. And I've been waiting for Sam Sparro to put something out so he better do something!
Yeah, so this first half, for me, hasn't been that exciting, though the tours have, but I'm really excited for the last half!

The CD isn't out, so you can't rag on it, just yet. Yeah, they're not the best band ever, but I like some of their work. So Wrong It's Right was a pretty good album, and Coffeeshop Soundtrack is one of my favorite songs by them. I'm pretty excited to see where they'll go with Nothing Personal. Yeah, it may suck, because we haven't heard it just yet, but it could also be awesome, so don't rag on it just yet, kay?

I think I've seen Tate mention that this year has been pretty weak. And his initial thoughts on the fun. album didn't prepare me to see it at 4. What I'm wondering is if the album is that high because he thinks most the other albums released this year are weak or if even in a stronger year it would place high on his list? As a big Format fan, Dog Problems is a perfect album. How does Aim & Ignite compare?
I don't think this year has been week ... I just made a thread a few weeks ago about how the past few weeks hadn't given me anything new to listen to in a while. I was getting a bunch of albums early - and so it left a void when there wasn't much more to listen to/look forward to -- you know?

I love fun. - it took a while (like Dog Problems) to really sit with me and for me to grow into it. Now that I have, I love it. "All the Pretty Girls" is such a great summer song.

TBH - I tossed this list together passed mostly off of what I had played the most this year (using last.fm). And I've had that album for a while, so it showed up higher. I didn't put as much thought into this as I will my end of the year list. But I do really like that NFG album - it's a whole lot of fun and those guys will always be one of my favorites.

I'm a huge fan of NFG but with more time I've grown a little sick of the album. I mean it's still a fun album to listen to but I would have loved to have seen progression from the Coming Home sound. But I have feeling it will end up on my end of the year list.

I'm really bothered seeing Manchester on everyone's list. It's an ok album, but definitely not the best of the year so far. I feel like people are just hoppin on the bandwagon, putting it on their list because they should. Am I the only one that thinks this record isn't amazing?! It's mediocre IMO.

Silversun Pickups- Swoon should be more recognized. This album is great.
The Dangerous Summer- Reach For The Sun deserves all the praise in the world. So good.
Dave Matthews Band- Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King
Rise Against- Appeal To Reason I know, I know, it came out last year but it's so good i'm putting it on this list. It might be on every favorite list I ever make.

...or maybe people have it on their list because they actually like the music. it's fine (and encouraged) to have your opinion on the music itself, but i don't think it's fair to assume people are merely bandwagon hopping just because they like a record that had hype.

I love these lists! Such a great way to discover new music. Anyway, my list so far:

1. All The Day Holiday - The Things We've Grown To Love
2. The Sounds - Crossing The Rubicon
3. Sparks The Rescue - Eyes To The Sun
4. Nightmare Of You - Infomaniac
5. Telepathe - Dance Mother
Also finally got into School of Seven Bells this year (ex-Secret Machines), even though their record was released in October.

That's pretty much it. I need new suggestions! I haven't been impressed by too much lately. But I'm extremely anxious for the rest of the year with releases from Stellastarr*, Third Eye Blind, Muse, Say Anything, The Honorary Title, Tegan and Sara, Paramore, As Tall As Lions, Brand New, and definitely The Bravery.

I know im probably going to be bashed for this but, i used to be really into a day to remember but i got my hopes up for homesick and was sorely disappointed. For those who have heart and the old album were so much more original and brutal, homesick was way to autotuned and to me it seems that a day to remember sold out with homesick, and anyone notice how there album art for homesick completely copied the devil wears prada re-released old album's art, which came out first by the way. I love the old albums but homesick was...eh, there was only a few good songs.

I honestly think I respect Brokencyde fans more than you.

Ok maybe not that extreme, but it's close.

I spent a few minutes quickly compiling this in excel. It's a top 10 for the year-so-far based on all of the staff ratings. I made it the easy way and assigned 10 for each #1 pick, 9 for the next, etc. For the one lady who didn't rate, I gave 5 to each, and for Adrian, I gave 10-9-8-7-6 with nothing lower.

Here's the result:

1. Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything to Nothing (57)
2. The Dear Hunter - Act III: Love and Death (39)
3. The Dangerous Summer - Reach for the Sun (38)
T-4. Kevin Devine - Brother's Blood (28)
T-4. P.O.S. - Never Better (28)
6. Dredg - The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion (26)
7. Morrissey - Years of Refusal (24)
8. The Decemberists - Hazards of Love (23)
9. Fake Problems - It's Great to Be Alive (22)
10. Nightmare of You - Infomaniac (21)

Honorable Mentions:

Grizzly Bear (20)
Closure in Moscow (19)
Maria Taylor (19)

My personal list would be topped by The Dangerous Summer, Dredg, The Dear Hunter, Rob Thomas, Green Day, Hurt, mewithoutYou, Manchester Orchestra, Blue October, Castledoor, Portugal. The Man, Appleseed Cast, and Eels.

It's great seeing The Dear Hunter and mewithoutYou on a lot of lists. Act III is in constant rotation. It's unlike anything I've ever heard.
