Miss May I - Apologies Are for the Weak
Record Label: Rise Records
Release Date: June 23, 2009

A few months ago I attended the Sweet Brag Tour, which was headlined by The Devil Wears Prada and A Day To Remember. It seems that tours of this magnitude always have a local band opening. I attended the show at Bogart's in Cincinnati, Ohio. The band Miss May I (hailing from Dayton, Ohio) was the opening band and these men took me by complete surprise. I had become familiar with the band's first EP, Vows of the Massacre, and I loved it. Later I learned that had signed to Rise Records, and planned to release their first full length entitled Apologies Are for the Weak.

The debut album opens with "A Dance With Aera Cura," a hard hitting, straight-up metalcore song (if you have been a fan of Miss May I, the title may look familiar, but this song is completly different). After only listening to the first 30 seconds of the song I could tell Miss May I are extremely talented in every aspect. The guitarists do a great job of combining complex and beautiful guitar leads with a talented drummer and outstanding vocalists.

Breakdowns in the metalcore scene have became something you put in a song just because you run out of ideas. Although this album is full of them, Miss May I know how to do them right. The drummer has extreme talent and can be heard well on every track. In "Architect," the drummer incoporates a unique double bass style in a breakdown. "Tides" showcases the cleanness and technicallity of Miss May I by hitting you with both a great lead and chugging guitars at the same time, a style that continues throughout the album. "Harlot's Breath" shows off the impressive leads and solos that Miss May I's guitarists are able to put out. "Apologies Are for the Weak" shows how Miss May I can go from a smooth rhythmic sound to a clean and collected breakdown.

The incorporation of clean vocals came with the addition of a bass guitarist. Miss May I do a great job of quickly changing the style of the music. They seem to do this in every song, but I think it sounds best on the track "Porcelian Wings" as he proclaims, "Our word is true, believe in every note we sing, these voices will not fade away." The lead vocalist has a great range, going from deep growls to sonic screaming in no time, which grabs your attention (as if your not giving it already). His lyrics speak of our dying world. In the song "Porcelian Wings" the vocalist shouts "My eyes are bloodshot. They have seen the damned!" In the song "Forgive And Forget," he explains the feeling we all get once in awhile, wanting to go back to the past. "Take me back to the way it use to be, I'll never close my eyes to a place like this, somewhere I can call my own."

Miss May I has released one hell of a debut album. Apologies Are for the Weak may not be something that will change the metalcore genre, but for being as young as they are (all the members are under the age of 19), they have plenty of time to grow.

As I Lay Dying; Bring Me The Horizon's Count Your Blessings; The Devil Wears Prada with more breakdowns and no keyboardist

i listened to this band the first time like three months ago, before the sweet brag tour, when they had like 4000 friends on myspace. I liked them, but something about them just made me want more, they are very good, but there's just something about them that doesn't work... i don't know...

This band is HIGHLY overrated. All I saw for a month was people asking for leaks of it and its mediocre at best. This band does nothing to set itself apart from the pack.

TDWP is a very apt comparison. They do need some fine-tuning however...

This album's alright, not anything special but it's listenable. The demo version of Architect was a lot better than the album version, though.

I personally enjoy the hell out of this cd. I think its great, and I mean, for the age these guys are they are pretty talented. Yes the song structures are pretty formulated, and some of the breakdowns cliche, but whatever, I like it

I'm usually against anything Rise records but I bought this album out of boredom and for once I don't regret buying a rise records album. This band definetly has talent and the vocals are great and I think that they could make a lot better stuff if you give them time to grow. it is overall a very enjoyable album

I agree with you on that.

I like their cover of Swing, but that's about it.

Their clean vocals sounded beyond terrible at the cincy sweet brag date.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned how much these guys sound like Bring Me the Horizon. They're practically the American version of them.

I completely agree that the 'demo architect' was far superior.

I'll check out this album, but I don't have high hopes for it.

If you dig generic metalcore (like me) then you'll enjoy this album. They're certainly nothing special, but its a fun listen. They could potentially develop into something of significance

It's debatable, but they sound a lot alike. Especially with the vocals, the screamer in this band Oli both kind of have thrashy vocals. Not to mention the guitar work is fairly similar too.

From what I've heard so far (I'm far more familiar with BMTH than MMI) I think BMTH has a bit more diversity to their material, though neither band strays too far out to try something completely different in their very generic genre.

I'm very familiar with both bands and I'll just say that these guys sound a hell of a lot like Bring Me the Horizon.

It doesn't make any sense to me, but when I listened to their demos I hated it, but when I listened to this album I liked it

They sound way too much like At The Throne of Judgment though, almost identical

That's where I (someone who named themself after a BMTH song) draw the line. There are some similarities to AAFTW and CYB. However, they sound more like a thrashy TDWP that is even moreso generic. And when I compare a band to TDWP (one of my fav bands) and say they're not that good. Then there's a problem.

Look a few posts above. Error was fixed.

I need to change that line, it's been that for months haha. That song is the only one of theirs that's bearable. Still laughable though.

i despise the keyboard at the very beginning. You know, while he's singing softly. I'm a huge sucker for piano/keyboards. I adore the instrument so much. It's the first time I've hated a keyboard in a song.

They're a bunch of ignorant assholes. Seriously. I can't even listen to the CD.

At a show, being in a band I asked Jerod what type of set he used, because I couldn't tell with all of the crap he had on it.

Reply.
"Get the fuck out of the way" and he pushed past me.

Can't stand any of them.

Yeah dude, they bite ATTOJ's style big time. ATTOJ should forever remain untouchable.
I hate Miss May I.
