Apparently this is because of the Dark Knight getting snubbed last year. Good thing is this gives Bruno a huge chance of getting nominated, I think.

More about WALL-E getting snubbed, IMO.

Seems pretty dumb. All this means is that 5 more movies get to put nominated for Best Picture on their Box Art.

I am really amazed by this decision. I think it's very stupid, but I guess it would have been nice to see Wall-E nominated.

The Academy should worry about nominating 5 songs for Best Original songs instead and not snubbing The Boss and giving it to some whack ass song.

I'd rather they just add on a movie or two or whatever depending on the year if there's a feeling that another is deserving of nomination.

Foosimoo
06/24/09, 02:15 PM
If they really have to change it, isn't 6-8 enough? Why 10, it just seems like there will be a few films nominated just for the sake of getting to 10 nominees.

The Road will probably win this this year. I don't have any intention of seeing this, but I just have a feeling.

or how about they actually get the 5 best pictures of the year in the category and not put stuff like the reader in there when it's obvious to everyone it doesn't belong?

Dude, it deserved it. Even Winslet knew that - see 3 minutes and 25 seconds in.

Still a terrible idea.

EXACTLY. i see it as the studios wanted more possibility of being nominated as a cash grab. everybody knows a LOT of people go out to see the nominees for best picture. it's a cash grab for the studios.

This. I really can't see it ever being necessary to have more than maybe seven (at most) nominees.

Most of the time, I only think 3 of the 5 are deserving, so this is going to be awful.

I'm gonna go with this. The people choosing should choose 5 actual great movies. The Reader was okay, not Best Picture worthy. Winslet gave it her all and SHE deserved it, but the movie, not so much.

I think this is an excellent idea. Yes, there is always a steamer in the nominees, and there is always 3 or 4 that get completely snubbed- just take a look at the last few years. Into The Wild, The Wrestler, The Dark Knight, Wall-e? I think this is the best idea that Academy has had in years, I'm surprised people are so adamantly against it.

I'm kidding. Great movie though.

Good point. I do think that the academy could do it in five if they didn't insist on nominating shit like The Reader or Juno, but on the other hand, I really enjoyed watching all the nominees this year and deciding what I think deserved the award. This will only give me reason to watch more movies, and I'm fine with that, as long as they don't suck.

i don't like this idea.. but i guess it doesn't really matter, just about everyone will have a feel for the top couple movies... the rest will just be filler.

also, i doubt there has ever been a year with 10 GREAT movies that all deserved a nomination

lol damn bold statement. I still think it was probably within the top ten movies of the year...if not, just missing the mark.

The thing that makes me happy is that this will make Best Picture a much less easy category to predict.

Wall-E wasn't that great. Not a bad movie at all, I just don't understand why everyone loves it so much. I love almost every Pixar movie except Wall-E and Cars.

The thing that makes me happy is that this will make Best Picture a much less easy category to predict.

And therefore much harder for the Academy to choose who wins? Comparing five films of different genres is hard enough - comparing ten is going to disperse people's opinions even more.

IMO this makes nominations for the best picture have much less meaning.

TJ Wells

IMO they should have done this for the Best Original Screenplay category instead, honestly. Would give a lot of smaller films a chance to get major recognition.

Cheapen the Nomination more than the award.
