Rolling Stone recently conducted an interview with Tom Delonge; click here (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/9264432/blink182_man_launches_angels?rnd=11 39798152890&has-player=true&version=6.0.12.1040) to check it out.

We all knew a little bit of that, but Tom is definitley trying to fill some big ass shoes. I wish him the best of luck, because I for one would love to be treated with an album I can listen to and appreciate for a decade.

this is a good read indeed. i like it.
he says the first song is 'the adventurer' and i am excited to hear that it will hopefully be out this month. so that purevolume sight really has to be bogus...it says 'the adventure'.
i just hope that they can back this hype.

no arty Radiohead-type bands. None of it was good enough for me.
I got that far. After reading that I was disgusted with him, and closed the window.
I didnt enjoy the adventure very much anyways.
I listened to The Adventure again after reading that interview and I liked it a lot more. I appreciate what he's trying to do because this generation really is lacking things with staying power. We'll see if he succeeds or not, but I really admire him for trying.

I ended up listening to a lot of Peter Gabriel, U2, the Police, the Cure -- bands that got to stadium-level size. I wouldn't listen to any independent rock bands, no cool punk-rock bands, no arty Radiohead-type bands. None of it was good enough for me.

he is not saying that radiohead sucks, he is saying that their sound is not something he is trying to build on. calm down man. he wants stadium rock, a huge sound, that is not an insult to radiohead. he didn't want to listen to anymore average music (that doesn't include radiohead), because if he just listened to weird average music, he could never write "world changing" music like he says he wants to. i think his point is he wants more.

you said "he could never write 'world changing' music like he says he wants to if he listened to wierd average music...."
that would be referring to Radiohead........maybe you should clarify.

Tom just needs to stop talking and put out his music. If its life changing, it will be life changing without all of his hype. Everytime he talks he seems to say something bordering completely idiotic, whether that is because it came out differently than he intended or not. Just put out your music, the hype is completely unnecessary and will end up hurting your band in the end.

ever hear of the expression "bad publicity is still publicity"?

I dunno, some guy who knows that blink 182 shouldn't define punk for anyone and one who knows that half the people on here listening to some crappy music. I too liked Blink 182, in seventh grade...then I grew a taste for good music and found actual punk music. And who are you refering to when you say "who is he?" ? I reread your first sentence about 8 times just to make sure I wasnt an idiot when I didnt understand it the first 2 times. And it still doesnt make sense to me. I think you missed a preposition or messed up a verb ending or two.
unless you are the guy that doesnt define anything and Im the guy that listens to the crappy music.
In which case, I still stand by my original statement.
As to the "who is he", I was referring to the way you began your post that I quoted. Pretend that if it was said aloud, it was said incredulously. Who is he??? Who are you to judge?

But the fact is, this is Tom Delonge we are talking about. He could do anything and it would sell a million copies because of name recognition alone. If all he is worried about is album sales, then you are right. I guess I was just hoping that Tom had more integrity than that. If he is really about making the best music possible and creating a truly life changing album, then it would have been best to just let the music do the work. Instead he is setting everyone up for a let down.
This interview did clear up one thing for me though...Tom left Blink because he didn't want to have to listen to Mark and Travis's opinions and ideas. At least that is what I got from what I read. Basically I'm really dissapointed in the person that it seems Tom is now as oppose to the person I thought he was...hopefully im wrong.
Edit: This doesn't change the fact that I am sure I will still enjoy this album.

I will leave it to you to answer, b/c my sentence is missing only a comma and possibly the word "are" or "do". Easy to figure out though. I forgot that when leaving message board posts I need to follow MLA format for the benefit of typing monkeys with bad taste in music. Finally, you are judging me by calling into questioning the validity of my ability to say what is good/bad examples of punk rock or any genre of music.

i love how people on this site say, "just let the music do the talking, if it's life changing we'll know it." how stupid is that? is he not supposed to promote this? i love how confident he is in it, it is infectious. it's called promotion guys. and the bottom line is this, every time there is an AVA post on this site, it is sure to be followed by a ton of replies. people are talking, and this is what he wants. to say that he shouldn't speak highly of his music and just release it is stupid and naive.

just messing with you, but quite possibly an illiterate typing monkey, Ill have the doctor check it out tomorrow to verify (I could always find employment on a NASA space shuttle, make some big bucks)

People post as if a gun is to their head and they are told to come off as anal retentive as possible. Quit taking every word you read so personal.
And, for the record, when you look at Radiohead on the spectrum of music, they are quite an "artsy" band. That doesn't mean they're bad or inferior, they're just different and experimental.
You people take things too seriously.

I'm loving how everyone's getting so fired up about the Radiohead comment. Ha
Seriously, who the fuck cares?
He wasn't trashing them, he was just implying that he didn't want to take his sound in that direction.
Jesus, everyone starts getting so pissed about something taken out of context. He never said: "Fuck Radiohead, they blow ass." That would be a different story.
And you know what? Is the new single amazing? Not really. Is it world-changing? Probably not. It's just a good tune that I enjoy listening to. And I'll buy the album, and I'll like it. And I'm glad that I know Tom put a lot into it. The End. I don't see the point sitting here for 5 hours ripping on other people's opinions and getting all pissed off.

If you read what Tom actually said he is not insulting Radiohead. He is just saying that his inspiration for Angels and Airwaves was not bands like Radiohead or pop punk bands. His influences were bands like U2, The Cure, The Police, and Peter Gabriel. Each one of those bands are huge and sell out, like he said, stadium size shows. That is what he was looking for. He wants that anthematic feel. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and Tom's opinion was that those bands are what he likes and what influenced him. Simple as that.

you all need to get the sand out of your vaginas. radiohead does suck.
as far as tom's band, the only thing that bothers me is that bands like u2, the cure, the police never started out to be as "epic" and "dynamic" as they are. they never set out with the goal of becoming that huge. there's no "mathematical formula". there's simply good music. i just wish he was a little more subtle about it, but to each their own.
and why the hell would anybody want to be in a huge arena band anyway? to me, bands like fugazi and the descendents will always be much bigger, more important than any u2 or the police.

Tom, all you have ever been is a talker. Your ego has gone through the roof. You say you want to put out music of epic proportions but in reality you never challenge yourself. The music you have written resembles everything Blink 182 has ever written. You can never get past your basic power chords and riffs. Your music doesn't sound bad at all but you happen to be so repetitive with the way you create songs. From what I have heard so far Angels and Airwaves is nothing but Blink 182 re-hashed with a new name and some electronic sounds. Throw in a guitar solo and then you can speak. That is something you have never done and I am disappointed. You have the chance to be so much more, yet you never actually push yourself. Stop hyping yourself up so much because as of now you have absolutely nothing to show. I just hope you don't turn into a Billy Corgan with the ego you have.

i can agree with you about seeing bands in a smaller setting where you can really interact with the band on a more person to person level, but saying The Police are "generic arena rock" is absurd, they are by far one of the most influential bands to come out of the 80s. listen to them as a whole rather than for the handful of hits they had.

yes, because at age 23, i would have absolutely no idea of who the police are outside of a few hits. maybe i should pull out my old proclaimers records as well? or perhaps my sister's debbie gibson records?
and besides, phil collins was a much better frontman for genesis than peter gabriel. but then again, i've probably only ever heard the song "invisible touch" and clearly don't know what i'm talking about.

i'm sorry, somewhere between looking at your coheed icon and "cultured music fan" comment, i started laughing. and that's a nice list of favorite bands. way to be completely obvious and name a few rock bands from every generation. i never aspired to be anything more than average, i simply said it was a personal preference. and yes, ian mackaye writing lyrics that takes an objective view of the world is very childish and asinine. almost reminds me of an author that i like, jack kerouac, who *HOLY SHIT* is listed as one of your favorites as well! wow! wasn't kerouac the one who said "Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion."? jeez, let's see, ian mackaye once wrote a song called seeing red that spoke of the same concept.
so yes, i happen to prefer a distorted guitar over some over-produced reverb. mix that with my pussy lyrics, and there you go. all i was stating was my opinion, i never said the police or u2 sucked. i actually do like the cure quite a bit. so why don't you take your self-absorbed misguided hostility and shove it up your condescending ass? what a dipshit.
