you said most talented of all time? let me guess, either you don't play an instrument or you JUST started playing guitar... if you started looking at most talented of all time, you would have to get into jazz or blues or bluegrass... not punk, and DEFINITELY not greenday... straight powerchords, simplest stuff to play... LEAST talent required... and so begins the degeneration of the american youth... please don't make me hate punk...

Les Paul is the fucking man..........when he got in a car accident and the doctor told him he wouldnt be able to play guitar again.....he had the doctor snap his arm into a position where he would be able to play again. on top of that he was a great inventor.

you cant really say best musician and name just one person, there are too many genres and too many instruments, you say mozart was the best musician, but we dont know if he could play guitar or drums, he definately had a talent, but by saying musician your saying best all around at all instruments. i have no idea who the best musician is, theyre probably not even in a band. songwriting is part of being a musician too, it just to impossible to define best musician without defining a genre or even decade, there are going to be too many opinions. it all depends on who you respect and what you respect. with that said, i think john lennon was a musical genious and a great musician.

The beatles were creative though, so you're half right, in my opinion.

Fuck you again. Brian Wilson had a good voice, and was a good musician, but he was no where near as creative as John Lennon, or Paul McCartney. The Beatles were much better musically and lyrically, and all around better musicians.

In this modern era, I think you have to at least mention Elliot Smith's name. In terms of instrumental talent, he played every instrument, (and he's one of the most underrated guitar players ever) his writing is complex, and he never got stale.

But yeah, I'd have to say Brian Wilson was more talented than the beatles, considering he was pretty much responsible for Sgt. Pepper's and all that. I mean if he hadn't been nuts, and Smile had come out when it was supposed to, it would be a completely different argument.

Yuck. I love Brian Wilson, don't get me wrong. He was a great musician, and possibly had one of the best voices ever in music. He had a way with melody that couldn't be matched. But as far as creativness goes, he's not even close to John Lennon, or Paul McCartney. Both were better musicians as well. The whole "Sgt Pepper was only made because of Pet Sounds" is old and overdone. The same could be said for Pet Sounds, that it have been made if it wasn't for Revolver. Revolver is better than anything the Beach Boys put out, easily. Pet Sounds is a great album, but the Beach Boys didn't have a ton of "great" albums. Sure, they made pop music better than just about anyone. But musically and lyrically they didn't do anything else on the level of Pet Sounds, besides that album. And they certainly didn't create anything on the level of Revolver, but then again, no one besides the Beatles has.

Revolver is untouchable, that's not my point. My point was if Biran Wilson had got gone nuts, and Smile came out, and they continued to progress from there, this whole argument would be completely different.

Also, this thread was who is the best musician, and when you talk about John and Paul, well it's like one in the same. I'm not trying to take anything away from the Beatles, because the fact is they are, as I said, untouchable. But John and Paul were great because of they were John and Paul. Had they never met each other, I would say that neither would have 1/8th of the success or impact that they had as a team. I mean Wings was cool and all, but yeah they needed each other. Now I know this all based on what-if's and maybe's but hey, I'm a dreamer. Just imagine if Brian Wilson had a Paul to his John (or vice-versa)

And I'd like to say that the best thing about Biran Wilson are the harmonies. They are simply perfect.

Oh yeah, the person that said George was the most talented Beatle was on crack. He was the man and a great guitar player and all, but he had to put Clapton on his own songs to get them onto the full album

I understand what you're saying. It is based on a lot of "what if's." John Lennon still made Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, while Paul still made Band on the Run and Ram. Both had many amazing albums, without each other. Like you said, they might not have been as talented or popular if they hadn't met... But the fact is, they did meet, and they are the best musicians. Revolver is untouchable, and Smile didn't come out. We could go on forever saying, "if this had happened, so and so would be the better musician." But instead, we'll go on what really did happen, which is what makes the Beatles win, in my opinion. Reading on my previous post, it makes it look as if I'm degrading Pet Sounds in a way.. which I'm not at all. I would say it's probably in the top 5 albums of all time, and certainly in the top 10. Brian Wilson was talented, I'm just trying to explain why I believe he wasn't as talented as John Lennon. And George was a very talented guitar player and songwriter. I think he was held back when he was with the Beatles. I listened to an interview with George Martin (the Beatles producer), and the interviewer asked, "what about George?" Martin replied "Poor poor George. I think if I would have spent more time working with him and not so much with John and Paul, he would be a songwriter on their level today." Another "what if" but I'm just stating. He wasn't on the level of talent of John or Paul, though.
