So... Which instrument do you think is the most important?

I don't think music really works that way, in any genre. Once an instrument is in a song, it's just as important as any other. Even if it's a barely audible synth pad in the background that just adds some depth to fill the soundscape, it's just as important as everything else.

Weird question.

Are we talking about like shaping rock and roll history? If so, then definitely the guitar.

If you're just asking which instrument is most important in general, they are all equally valuable. It just depends on how they are used.

Horns?

yeah.
The reason I asked this was because my friend (who plays the french horn) always says that horns are the most important instrument in indie rock, and I really want to prove her wrong.

lol at question. That's like asking which cavity in your heart is the most important.

But nonetheless, it's the electric or acoustic rainstick.

Jaw harp. I can shred on that thing. It's way harder than it looks.

I think in any rock band drums, or percussion, is most important. because thats what made the genre in the first place.

I know it's not technically an instrument, but I'd say vocals is most important.
