hepcat is/was just...just so fucking good. i'm so glad i got to see them live 3 or 4 times. bought 'out of nowhere' after seeing them on warped 97...so impressed w/ the live show. godamn i love them.

pietasters are not to be fucked w/ live. great live show. but their albums are all hit and miss...even willis, arguably the best, suffers from a weak second half of the album.

after seeing the dead 60's open for social d i'm tempted to buy that album. how is it?

agreed hepcat is a band that deserves to be called amazing

in my opinion the best pietasters album is Oolooloo
their live album as far as tracks go sounded great
but the immaturity between songs put me off a bit

the dead 60's, yea man they've got potential
you can hear the clash & specials mixed influences
very strongly, their album is great but i'd say their
next will be the one that counts

hmm, i might go pick up that dead 60's album

oolooloo is almost on par w/ willis for me BUT that hideous production kills it...that album sounds like it was recorded on a 4 track in my basement. but of course theres nothign quite like maggie may or girl take it easy...but the first 8 tracks on willis was always my favorite section of a pietasters album. the live one was damn good to.

Spring Heeled Jack ought to be on that list, although they didn't release a lot of material. they were the best ska band i've seen live (RxB outstanding, because they aren't really ska) and i saw em probably 7 or 8 times back in the day when they toured around CT all the time... such a solid band and a great bunch of guys.

oh emm geeze no rbf???

All sarcasm aside, I have a ska show at my college radio station, and two bands I play the shit out of are the slackers and the pietasters. Pietasters mainly because they are from this area, but some good stuff. Also play alot of the planet smashers, and alot of ska influenced bands (RxB, Monty, High School Football Heroes.) Also play alot of reggae (not alot of ska in the library)

I'm feeling the Big D and the Kids Table....they've been my fav ever since "good luck" was released. It's also cool to hear a harder edge to ska...

Another one that deserves a mention perhaps would be Five Iron Frenzy. Never really got into them, but they were pretty big with a few of my buds back in the day.

From that list, I'd have to say The Toasters. Definitely a great band to see live. Lots of fun.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones...yeah, i think they need to be commended even though they were in Clueless...i mean with songs such as "Rascal King" and "The Impression that I Get," you would have to go with them. At least i think so.

I voted for Hepcat. Easily the best on that list.

And as for the question at hand, I think the better way of phrasing it would have been to ask "what's your favorite modern traditional ska band?" That is, ska bands sans punk influences (which would remove from discussion LTJ, RBF, RxB, and SHJ among others).

Also, I'll just throw them out there, but I recently got the self-titled album from The Aggrolites. More reggae than ska, but still really fucking good. Everyone go buy it!

I never listen to ska anymore but I was obsessed for a couple years awhile ago....my favs were always RBF, Fishbone, Less Than Jake....and does anyone remember Buck O Nine?

Reel Big Fish

woo almost forgot i made this poll. the reason behind making it, without the likes of less than jake, reel big fish etc was to try start some discussion about the more traditional & less known (to this site) ska bands around. if i had of thrown bands like that in amongst the works, it's rather obvious what every second vote would have been
