Are the Zil-bells even close to worth the price? Kinda considering it down the line because the bell on my crash is no replacement for a real ride bell, even if riding it works wonderfully.

They're cool... I guess. I find myself using the bell on my ride for accents much more than my zil-bel, though. It sounds cool, but personally I feel it can be pretty cheesy if over used in my opinion.

Just a quick question: For a cymbal that you ride on but heavily with "crashes," like in many rock songs, is it a smaller ride or a larger crash? lol.

Some crashes you can ride on, and some rides you can crash on.
I usually find that when someone is using a ride with crashing, you can sometimes hear them hit the bow. It's kind of like a pingy crash.
I think that should answer your question haha.

Just a quick question: For a cymbal that you ride on but heavily with "crashes," like in many rock songs, is it a smaller ride or a larger crash? lol.
Honestly, in most cases it comes down to the actual line of cymbals, but I've done both, and here's what I found:
The ride won't have even remotely as bright of a sound, in the way it's made it's gonna be thicker and it never hits that bright cap of sound- for riding it's superb, and for a bell it's great. But for crashing, notsomuch.
A crash like, 18" or so will be darker than a 20" crash, so an 18" crash, as I've discovered through much playing, is possibly the most versatile cymbal for this job- the bell is a-ok, and the riding is very shimmery and bright, not too solid or hard and pingy, but enough to do the job, and especially when you're mic'd. Crashing is obviously good cause you're crashing, it's bright but not painfully bright, unlike a 20" would be in that condition.
Cymbals are funny sometimes.

I use my 21" Sweet Ride more as a crash than a ride. It depends more on the thickness of the cymbal than the diameter as to how well it will work for crashing.

Yeah, though every ride I used has been too thick to work well, so in my experience crashes are just useful all around for that.

The lights are just for fun, nothing more :]
I ordered all the parts separately and assembled it.. So I guess you could call that a "build" but the shells themselves were made by Keller. It would be tough to think of exactly how much I paid but for the 3piece and snare it was around 2,700$

Thank you, no videos yet. though now that you mention it, I will definitely look in to making one.

hahaha... well I bought them brand new about a month back so thats my advantage. But i've also become more conscious about keeping a little rag near by to wipe them off after each use. Just give it a really hard rub with a clean rag and the prints come right off. I know what you mean though, in the past, I wouldn't clean my A customs and gunk would build up continuously until the cymbal eventually sounded like crap haha

That will be my method when I get new cymbals. I used to be crazy about fingerprints so I used some Paiste cleaner and it just screwed them up. They started to lose their shine. After that I tried Groove Juice. It cleaned up the Paiste mess, but it started to take the logos off.

yea, definitely a good idea.
Most cymbal cleaners are formulated for different types of metal. I had the same experience except vice versa. A friend of mine used Paiste cleaner on my old A custom hats and literally with each swipe I saw the finish be completely wiped off. They looked and sounded like garbage after that so I sold them.
Groove juice is tricky but it does work. just avoid the logos, like you've already mentioned, and it works great

Hey, so right now my bass drum sounds like crap. The beater seems to bounce off the head instead of really sinking in with a thump, and when I use it, the whole kit rattles and basically all the other drums reverberate. I'm getting a resonance head with a hole in it, will that help? Any other suggestions? Will a different pedal/beater help as well. Also, I have a Remo Powerstroke 3 as a batter head on it.

Try loosening your beater head. Putting a port in the reso could help, but not nearly as much as loosening the beater side. If you're using a plasic beater, maybe switching to felt would help? I use them and never have this problem, so i'd say its worth a shot. Also, a pillow in the bass drum itself that actually touches the beater head is a last resort to kill the resonation, but i would suggest maybe picking up a powerstroke or emad drum head instead, depending on your budget. Good luck!

Hm, I'll try that, thanks. Does the particular shape of the beater affect it much?

The shape of the beater will affect the sound, absolutely. What are you using?

Just got a new top hat to replace my cracked top Mastersound.
I just went the cheap-easy-no-wait-way and got the A Custom top which is basically the same as the Mastersound top.

When I bought my Mastersound pair, the guy gave me the Mastersound bottom, and a regular A Custom top. It sounded weird to me so I took it back and got the right stuff (even though I got a used/floor model top after paying full price for a new one). How's it treating you?

I've yet to play it, it was 10PM when I got home last night. I'm actually about to go find out.

I think I have a DW two-way. Any suggestions?

oh, well if you want more of a solid thud use the felt side, but if you want more of a click, like more attack, use the hard plastic side.

4 piece Gretsch Catalina Club Mod, Silver with Black Stripes (the same shell pack muttley has)
2-ply evans on every tom
emad 2 bass batter and resonant
evans reverse dot powerenter on snare
DW 5000 double pedal
some standard 2-leg PDP hi-hat stand that works magnificently
and due to unfortunate circumstances and lack of money:
zildjian ZXT 14" hats, 14" (guys at Musicians Friend sent me this free, no idea why), 16", 18" crashes, and 20" ride. plus a 6" zil-bel. although i would trade them all in a heartbeat for one solid pair of hats, crash, and crash ride.
vic firth extreme 5A's.
It's going to be so so so hard to leave this thing at home when I leave for college. :-(

Muttley, it must've been the top hat you got cause my hats sound nearly identical to how they did when I first got them. If anything a tad more high end so it matches my crash in volume.

Hmm... I just remember playing with mine and thinking something sounded a little off. Maybe it was just me.

True, and recent Zildjians are a bit inconsistent too, so it could have been THAT cymbal.

Just got a check to replace my cracked ride. Unfortunately, the check is only for $184, and is void in about 80 days. This will get interesting...

Can someone explain to more of a guitar player, how much heads affect the sound and tone of drums? I still have stock heads on mine, and they all ring pretty badly, and the kick drum sounds like knocking on a door... would nice heads improve make a big difference? (I know this is a total noob question, sorry. haha)
By the way, I have a Perl Vision 4 piece set. Those should be able to sound decent right?

Yeah, a Vision 4 Piece should sound alright, not stunning, but not bad.
Nice heads will always make an improvement, if you choose the right ones for the application. If you're planning on hitting hard, anything two or more plies will work well.
While I'm here, has anyone cut down old cracked cymbals to make a new one? I've got an old Zildjian crash that I want to take down to a bell because it's got this oddly muted but still cutting bright tone, but I've got no idea how to take all the edge off.
