The Killing Moon (http://www.thekillingmoon.com) - A Message Through Your Teeth
Release Date: March 7, 2006
Record Label: Fearless Records (http://www.fearlessrecords.com)
The first thing you should know about The Killing Moon is that they hate being stereotyped as a “ska” band. Instead, they rather be known as an aggressive rock band with horns. And on their debut EP from Fearless Records, “A Message Through Your Teeth,” they live up to that claim. Hailing from Portland, Maine, this five-piece (vocalist/guitarist Ryan Hannan, bassist Trevor Geaghan, trombonist Dan Lafayette, saxophonist Chris Michaud, and drummer Jeremy Yehle) combines fierce vocals and elaborate melodies with pounding drums, fine guitar work, and insanely catchy horns, making this “Message” something you rather shout about instead of muttering through your teeth.
“Subject A” kicks off the album with a soft strumming of the guitar which explodes into a bangin’ riff. The first thing that stands in this song is Hannan’s bold voice. This is no whiny or nasally sounding voice that some bands give us; this is a real intense and beautiful voice. The next thing that stands out is the saxophone and trombone, which really give this song the extra “oomph” and make it really good. “Bottomfeeder” is a fast track and the dual vocals are nice on this track. The chorus also has a “bouncy” feel to it. On “Sugar Pills,” Hannan’s voice is full of fire and really carries the track. Not only does Hannan have a great voice, but also he is pretty good with his instrument of choice, the guitar, and it definitely shows on “A Book Of Love Stories.” The rhythm combination of Geaghan and Yehle is exceptionally good throughout the album also. “Postcard From Los Angeles” is full of melody and intensity and closes out the EP in fine style.
“A Message Through Your Teeth” is already one of the better EP’s you’ll hear this year and The Killing Moon are one of most talented new bands you will come across in 2006. The Killing Moon has a very bright future, and “A Message Through Your Teeth” has me anxiously awaiting their debut LP. Fearless Records have found a gem in The Killing Moon, and you would wise to make this gem one of your own on March 7.
