An update from Justin of Everlea (http://everlea.com/) talking about the new album and the recording process is below. Also, some pictures of the band in the studio can be seen here (http://www.everlea.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=244).
As you may have heard we're working on a new full length album. You also may have heard that we we're going to be keeping a studio journal... while the former is true the latter may not seem as true... I'm going to try to make the latter a little more true than not true, deal?
Deal.

I'll start by a brief summary of everything that has brought us to where we presently are in the recording of our new album.

Basically, we spent the whole spring and summer in preproduction/writing mode. I locked myself in my basement where I enlisted the help of my trusty Mbox and Protools, heaps of drum machines and sequencers, guitars, basses, microphones, violins and other random instruments to create the bulk of what made up our writing demos... which have now evolved into the songs that will make up our new album. Finally, after months of preproduction (preproduction=getting ready to record via hours of practice, reworking the arrangements, doing mic selection/tests to see what sounds best, and other things of this nature) we entered sound master studios (Ottawa, Ontario) the second last week of October 2005.

The first 2 days in the studio were devoted to getting the best drum sounds we could possibly get. This involved everything from finding the right skins for the right drums, to finding, not only the right mics/mic placement, but the best sounding mic pres (a mic pre is a unit that boosts the signal coming from the mic to be recorded. It's a very important part of the signal chain) for the right mic. All of this was time well spent and we were lucky to have such knowledgeable ppl working with us. Brendan pounded through the entire album in one day, more often then not getting entire songs within the first few takes. We spent a second weekend, about a month later; to re-record the drums for some songs that we felt should have a different sound. That's been the best part of recording this album so far; we've been allowed the time to be super picky.

After drums was bass. We spent about a week and a half on bass. I thought recording bass was funny... because while James has a nice selection of vintage basses we ended up going with his trusty 70's precision bass on every single track. The bass tracks sound great and are super duper tight with the drums.

After bass and drums were recorded we started on acoustic guitars. We felt that acoustics should come before electrics because of the special vibe/energy they to bring to a song (yeah, we're trippy like that). Also, 15 of the 16 songs have acoustics on them... obviously acoustics make up a very important part of this record. I'm gonna try to attach some pictures taken while acoustic tracking was being done.

Or maybe I’m not... hmmm... I can't figure this out... time to call James...

I’ll post more on this when I figure out how to upload pictures… until then, be excellent to one another.
